Would you buy a house without a bath?

We're looking at a property just now with the main bathroom only having a shower cubicle and no bath.

It's in a new build area, 3 beds, new schools being built so obviously has a family market in mind.

Whilst we're not needing a bath, we're concerned that not having one would affect its resell later down the line.

Would you buy a house with no bath?

Would you buy a house with no bath and no room to put one in?

Thanks mnetters!

No I love a bath, it's nice to lie back and relax in one after a hard days work.

Temporaryanonymity · 24/05/2021 08:28

No, I wouldn’t. Having a good soak is important for me. I’d miss it too much.

NamelessNinja · 24/05/2021 08:28

No, not only because of having a young family but also because I love baths, so I think you would be crossing off two different potential buyer groups

MakkaPakkas · 24/05/2021 08:29

No, I wouldn't. I like a bath & also anyone with little kids needs a bath to wash them in. It could work for a house share though.

Getyourarseofffthequattro · 24/05/2021 08:29

I would buy if there was space for me to put one in. Wouldn't buy if I couldn't have one at all, no.

CityCommuter · 24/05/2021 08:29

Well if there's room to put a bath in then buy the house and you can do the work later... it wouldn't cost that much! If the house is otherwise perfect and in an ideal area for schools then don't hesitate as you know someone else will be along shortly to buy it!

BillCar · 24/05/2021 08:29

A bath is a non negotiable for me, people will say it wouldn't put them off as you can easily fit a bath once you've bought but unless the house is really special, why would you bother when 99% of houses for sale already have one fitted.

Same here.
Poorlykitten · 24/05/2021 08:30

Nope. Need a bath.

LoopyGremlin · 24/05/2021 08:31

No, I wouldn’t. I do like an occasional bath but my kids love a bath and could not do without one. When we moved into our house there was a brand new beautiful shower room which we ripped out to put a bath in!

BeyondMyWits · 24/05/2021 08:33

Yes, but I am at the other end of life where it can take 10 min to get into the bath to have a shower, and if I fall in there I could be there for a weekGrin. We are looking for a house with an ensuite, which makes it a bigger house than we need... because most main bathrooms only have a bath.

Soontobe60 · 24/05/2021 08:37

We took the bath out when we changed our bathroom. But I have a dodgy knee and wrists so can’t climb in and out, dh never had baths anyway as he’s too tall, and we aim to get here til we die!
Dd is moving and said she’s taking the bath out, but I said she shouldn’t as it’s a nightmare showering a toddler! I know, as my toddler grandson sleeps over a lot.

greenlynx · 24/05/2021 08:38

I could buy it but only if it’s otherwise perfect and rightly priced and I was in a hurry to buy. However I agree that it’s narrowing down the pool of potential buyers.
Is the house perfect for you otherwise? If so, maybe it’s not a bad idea.

buddhasbelly · 24/05/2021 08:38

Thanks all! The house is still under construction so have asked for plans to see if one could be fitted in (we were shown around a similar just-finished one that did have a bath but advised the one we are looking at doesn't have a bath)

felineflutter · 24/05/2021 08:39

Not if there was no room to fit one in. I would buy if I could add a bath easily.

siblingrevelryagain · 24/05/2021 08:40

No. Even if you’re not typically bath people, if you have a cold/flu or develop muscular issues (even temporarily after exercise/gardening) you need the option of having a good soak

BarkingUpTheWrongRoseBush · 24/05/2021 08:40

Yes. If there was room to have a bath put in.

We put a bath in the family bathroom at my insistence as we had one in the en-suite in our old house. Turns out what I liked was locking everyone out and having time to myself rather than the bath per se. Now the bath is in the family bathroom I’ve had about 2 ...handy for the dog though.

buddhasbelly · 24/05/2021 08:40

It is a great location and the spec of the houses are great yes but we're mid 30s and may well move again in 10 years, don't want to vastly reduce a potential resell market if no space at all for one. Will see what the plans say!

Manydaysgoby · 24/05/2021 08:40

I’d buy if there was room to add one. Otherwise, no.

RaspberryCoulis · 24/05/2021 08:42

I never have a bath. Think the last time was about 2005. So no, it wouldn't bother me personally.

But from a resell perspective yes it would bother me and I would think of squeezing one in, even a smaller bath. Babies can be bathed in a sink or baby bath but for toddlers a shower isn't always practical.

Shinyflowers · 24/05/2021 08:43

We have a large bath that is used maybe once/twice a year but when dcs were younger, my mum had only a shower and it was v difficult staying as couldn’t bath the children. Lots of people like baths and they are essential with young children.

Grumblesigh · 24/05/2021 08:43

We have 2 bathrooms, one with a shower and one with a bath.

We are doing a refurb, and I'm having the bathtub replaced with a purpose-built shower. The tub was useful when the dc were little, but now it's just used as a shower. So I'd prefer to have a proper shower installed!

Mandalay246 · 24/05/2021 08:49

Yes! I have a shower over my bath and never use the bath as a bath, but still have to clean the damn thing. I'm not in the UK, but lots of people here just have showers and no bath.

Livingintheclouds · 24/05/2021 08:52

Yes if I could put one in. The house I'm buying has now bath I the loft en suite so putting a bath in, which may require moving a wall slightly.
I think master en suites you can have shower inly but the family bathroom needs a bath (with shower over, as I've also viewed houses with no showers!)

SpnBaby1967 · 24/05/2021 08:54

No I wouldnt. Young kids and showers are not a great mix. Plus the joy of watching a baby splash in the bath.

If you're past that stage I can see why you may feel a bath isnt needed, but imo a family house needs a bath.
