Is it a brothel?

First post so not sure which category to put it! Forgive me.

In ten days time I'm moving into my new home situated in a pleasant little market town on the outskirts.

It's a lovely well maintained detached 1930's property and I'm so exciting to move because we're currently in a much smaller house with two teen girls and 3 cats.

Sounds great so far?

BUT!!

I've just discovered that an empty commercial property situated five doors down is opening as a Thai massage parlour.

Fuck! Now I've totally blown my beans imagining hordes of horny buggers with tent pole trousers double parking down the street looking for a massage with a 'happy ending'.

OR

Is it a perfectly serene place of tranquility where a lovely aromatherapy massage is offered to the gentle reverberating ommmm chants of Buddhist monks with no need of a spunkerchief bin by the end of the massage couch.

Please give thoughts.. I'm shatting my pants!

Oh dear....I reckon there will be many happy endings...!!

TitusPullo · 10/03/2021 19:27

There is a Thai massage parlour in my town that will only accept women clients and all the staff are women, so there is hope it is just a massage parlour?

WhyMeLord · 10/03/2021 19:47

Spunkercheif 🤣

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 10/03/2021 19:50

Well if it's option (b) that'll be nice, and you say option (a) would make you blow your beans anyway, so it's a win-win Grin

CoffeeRunner · 10/03/2021 19:51

A Chinese lady I used to work with left to open a massage parlour. Eyebrows were raised (by some), but no, it genuinely is a very nice classy massage parlour. Offering only massages Grin.

CarnationCat · 10/03/2021 19:54

I strongly suspect a parlour not just for back massages...other types of massage 🤢

If it is a brothel, it will dramatically lower your house's value.

Based on what? Most Thai massage parlours are just that. Thai massage is great but it's not very sexy. We have one near us.

ComtesseDeSpair · 10/03/2021 20:23

Could be either. A lot of them really are just genuine spa treatment places. Though I used to live quite near to a Thai massage place which was a brothel and honestly, you’d never have known. From the outside it looked like a normal salon. Nobody going there wanted to draw attention to themselves so there was no loitering or antisocial behaviour. And generally these places run appointment systems so you aren’t going to get hordes of people arriving all at once.

BettyBeStillNow · 10/03/2021 20:26

Our local Thai massage place has a message on their website basically saying we are not a fucking brothel, we offer traditional Thai massage and just because a very small number of massage places are a cover for brothels, ours is not.

I think it is very sad that everyone would assume a happy ending is offered by any place that offers massage.

ComtesseDeSpair · 10/03/2021 20:28

Oh so true. DO and I had a couples traditional massage when we were in Phuket. I remember glancing over towards the end of the session to see him contorted into the shape of a fortune cookie, grimacing, with his masseuse lying across him with her full weight Grin

Ditto. Our local one has equal number (big, burly) male and female masseurs.

UhtredRagnarson · 10/03/2021 20:31

Does the business have a FB page? Do they already operate elsewhere? Get on the internet and google the owners name and the business name and see what sort of operation they seem to be running.

I live in quite a posh area which had a local shop ostensibly offering sports massages. My friend's husband was asked whether he wanted a "happy ending" after his sports massage. I believe he declined.

When I lived in London, the chap in the flat next door rented his flat out (we shared the landing and the hall wall so to speak). Slightly naively, I wondered why a lot of men kept ringing the buzzer to the block of flats asking to be let in. All became clear when someone posted a flyer through my flat with a full list of "specialities" on offer with some rather graphic photographic reconstructions. At the time, my husband was working abroad during the week so it did start to make me feel a bit uncomfortable. Eventually the other flat owners complained and the brothel was moved on to pastures new.

That said, I doubt a Thai massage parlour a few doors down would affect your house value as it's fairly common to have some more exotic neighbours living in London.

zxy12 · 10/03/2021 20:37

Sorry, just reread your post again and hadn't realised it wasn't central London. I can understand your concern!

SteelMack · 10/03/2021 20:39

I secretly hope it's a genuine Thai massage place, but you ring and ask to book a happy ending 😉😂

TitusPullo · 10/03/2021 20:43

Also the brothel nearest me is very obvious. They may as well just put a sign outside. They don’t even pretend to be a massage parlour. It’s a shop front with blacked out windows, the door always open, lots of CCTV and just a sign reading XX Street Name. The police must know they are there. I have no idea how they are allowed to continue to operate and it is definitely a brothel complete with website and Instagram page with graphic reviews. If walking past I like to give any men going in or out disapproving looks, they tend to look pretty sheepish.

GameSetMatch · 10/03/2021 20:57

Did the owners not tell you? This is clearly some information they should of declared, I’d get on to your solicitor.

Meezer2 · 10/03/2021 21:08

Thank you all for your replies. The owner of the house didn't mention this was going to happen, would they have known?

If I was going to mention it to my solicitor would I have any grounds for my complaint and if so I wonder what the outcome to this would be?

I'm not too concerned with regard to the house devaluing as I hoped it would be my forever home.

I gather the License for the business is going to be reviewed in 18 months so maybe if there's complaints against the business it could be closed down?

HollowTalk · 10/03/2021 21:13

Could you phone the local police station or council and ask whether any complaints have ever been made against the place?

Kfdbhydcjrsx · 10/03/2021 21:14

I don't know why people think it's so funny. Most of the women "working" in such places are victims of trafficking.

JanewaysBun · 10/03/2021 22:47

Could go either way.
I get waxed at a genuine place that calls itself a Thai spa. They do massages but it's clearly a beauty place. I haven't had a massage as the last time I had a Thai massage the lady clicked my toes and it really hurt!

But it could be somewhere trafficked women are sexually abused so you may need to do some more digging.

Divebar2021 · 10/03/2021 22:55

We have a Chinese Herbal place about half a mile from my house. One day I saw a “builder” type coming out - he just didn’t look like the type of person you would imagine being into Chinese herbal medicine. I did an internet search using the street name, town name and “ U.K. punting” and found a page of reviews for what was clearly a brothel. It had been a legitimate place but had been taken over and they kept the same signage. If it’s a brothel you will find out easily.

YesIDoLoveCrisps · 10/03/2021 23:30

I had bad sinus problems and innocently went in to a Thai massage place and asked about head massages to relieve the pain. She didn’t seem like she cared, later that evening the penny stopped. She’s wasn’t interested in my snotty headaches as she was only interested in ‘happy endings’. I feel really embarrassed as I had told her all about how I was giving up cheese to feel better Blush

What a delightful thread full of balanced level headed people who aren't judgmental in any way.

Confused how some of you operate in a civilised society I'll never know.
