Another kitchen layout one...

Hello, I'm on version sixty-odd of my kitchens plans and I'm quite happy with the layout but feel like it's not the best use of space. This would be an extension across the back of a semi detached, so all 3 walls shown are external - the left one will be against the boundary we share with our attached neighbours and the right side is next to the shared driveway so we can't go wider. I have tried putting units along the left hand wall but it makes the room feel disjointed and seating wouldn't fit well. I'm conscious that I may be able to fit everything shown in a smaller space and therefore would use less garden and build costs would be cheaper. The current kitchen will be a wc and small utility room so don't need washing machine space. I am envisaging the kitchen table to be a high table (bar style) with stools. Any thoughts anyone?

Where it says 'to dining room' is that actually a dining room? If so why do you need another table and chairs plus an island with bar stools? I think I would personally prefer a bigger island unit.

ApolloandDaphne · 08/03/2021 12:54

Also is that a pull out pantry unit in the corner? I can't really picture how that might work in that space.

PawPawNoodle · 08/03/2021 12:57

It doesn't look like there's actually much counter space despite being a large area to work with?

The fridge slightly overlapping the wall is making my bum cringe.

mamaoffourdc · 08/03/2021 13:16

It you have another dining table I would get rid of the small table make a large island with bench seating on that

ipredictacarrot · 08/03/2021 13:43

I tried a longer island with seating and thought it looked odd, and the whole left hand wall was blank. I've got the fridge tucked in as American style fridge freezers are at least 65cm deep and many are 75cm so it would stick out too much as it's close to a corner. The corner pantry as from DIY kitchens - see pic.

I don't need a table in the kitchen but want at least 2 bar stools. Preferably 4. I thought this would be easy with a big room but nothing seems quite right.

I've realised you plan your kitchen table to be one with high stools. I misread that. I would ditch the table and have a much bigger island with high stools. I have that in one of my past kitchens and it worked well.

ipredictacarrot · 08/03/2021 13:44

This is the type of table I was thinking for the kitchen.

I reckon big island or big kitchen table but not both.

ipredictacarrot · 08/03/2021 13:47

This is the longer island version. Not sure I can really fit 4 stools in.

Do you really need the huge pantry cupboard? It takes up a lot of space, and as a pp said, you don't have much counter space left, and some of that is straddling a corner which makes it a bit more awkward to use. Where do you plan to keep things like kettle and toaster? How much counter space will be left clear?

I'd also be concerned that having the hob close to the corner will be a pain. Anybody using the hob will be stood in the corner up against the cabinets, and that limits access to the sink for anybody else using the kitchen. Our hob is currently close to a corner and the sink just like in your layout, and it drives me mad.

ApolloandDaphne · 08/03/2021 16:13

Your island can have a bigger work top over hanging though. It can be in any shape/size you want it to accommodate the seating you need.

ipredictacarrot · 08/03/2021 16:18

Trying to keep a metre around the island to walk around so can't make the island much longer / wider. I liked the big pantry but maybe need to reconsider and try a normal corner unit.

Does everyone else have fridge freezers sticking out past the units?

Our current hob is next to a corner but there's nowhere else for it to go. Will have another think about it. Thanks everyone.

I love the big pantries too, so I understand. However, I think they only work if you've got a large enough space so that they don't overwhelm the rest of the kitchen and restrict the rest of the layout. I'd love one, but realised it would look daft and take up too much room in our kitchen (although, on paper at least, we have space to put one).

FuglyHouse · 08/03/2021 16:34

Also, do you already have the fridge freezer, or were you just planning to buy one? If you don't have one already, maybe think about buying a slightly smaller one, as I know there are a few American ones that are 80cm wide.

Betterversionofme · 08/03/2021 16:48

A whole wall floor-to-ceiling (where currently is the table) of shallow (maybe only 20cm deep, so doesn't take much space) storage/pantry. I would do different-from-from-rest-of-the-kitchen look door (without handles, simple, possibly so that people who don't know the kitchen wouldn't realize it isn't just a wall).

Ballbagisnotmyname · 08/03/2021 16:51

Have you thought about putting the hob in the island?

I haven't already got a fridge but there seems to be very little choice 65cm deep or less. I will have another look though. Not keen on an island hob. Good point about the bin too. Thought I was nearly there but looks like back to the drawing board!

Definelty not enough surface space.

I'd do as above poster suggested - large bank of storage on the blank wall - mixture of open and closed shelving. Pantry included in that, and, if possible, either the ovens or the fridge.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 08/03/2021 17:23

Like this.

Bernadette I did something similar to thy a few versions ago but felt too far away from the rest of the kitchen. Might try it with a peninsula a ditch the island.

OP posts:
BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 08/03/2021 17:27

Could your peninsula come out from where your fridge currently is, then down?

wifterwafter · 08/03/2021 17:36

Does the opening into the house have to be that big. You seem to have a lot of space but not really filled it. With an island you can at least have storage underneath.

Can you have a layout like attached. This is just an idea.

ipredictacarrot · 08/03/2021 17:41

Wifter the opening is the existing bay window opening and dining room through the gap has no windows but the opening could be made a bit smaller I guess. I was trying to work with the existing structure as much as possible.
