Another kitchen layout one...

Hello, I'm on version sixty-odd of my kitchens plans and I'm quite happy with the layout but feel like it's not the best use of space. This would be an extension across the back of a semi detached, so all 3 walls shown are external - the left one will be against the boundary we share with our attached neighbours and the right side is next to the shared driveway so we can't go wider. I have tried putting units along the left hand wall but it makes the room feel disjointed and seating wouldn't fit well. I'm conscious that I may be able to fit everything shown in a smaller space and therefore would use less garden and build costs would be cheaper. The current kitchen will be a wc and small utility room so don't need washing machine space. I am envisaging the kitchen table to be a high table (bar style) with stools. Any thoughts anyone?

This was a precious plan I almost settled on but thought the u shape would be better. I thought the ovens and fridge seemed too far from the sink and hob. This is a smaller space so would be cheaper!

Previous plan, not precious plan!

I prefer your previous plan.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 08/03/2021 18:22

I like that one. Dont forget when cooking you can (and likely will) use the island as a surface to work on.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 08/03/2021 18:23

Get these pull out drawer shelves underneath each oven to use as a stopgap when putting in/taking out dishes

Try a peninsula instead of an island?

fitzbilly · 08/03/2021 18:46

The previous plan is by far the best!

ApolloandDaphne · 08/03/2021 18:48

I am not keen on the previous plan. I would hate to be taking things in and out of the oven while people are walking past to go on and out of the garden. It doesn't seem safe at all.

huggzy · 08/03/2021 18:49

I'd have the left hand wall as a whole wall of cupboards, to include the oven and fridge freezer perhaps? Then you're left with much more worktop space on the other walls as you only need your sink and hob over there. If you still want seating, you could have a breakfast bar and stools along the top wall. Hob on the right hand wall, sink along the bottom. So like the most recent picture you've posted but with the seating area pushed against the wall really.

HasaDigaEebowai · 08/03/2021 19:06

Previous version is definitely the best

Daisydoesnt · 08/03/2021 19:32

Op Id make your island much bigger (deeper) and swing it round by 90degrees. I don’t like the table with the high stools - it just doesn’t look like a very relaxing space to hang out. Wrong vibe for a kitchen. Sorry.

ipredictacarrot · 09/03/2021 09:07

Thanks for the comments - I think I'm back on my previous plan.

I've tried 2 options for the island - I think I prefer the island not attached to the wall and the seats looking to the garden.

I moved the door to the utility room to the dining room to allow a u shaped kitchen but if I scrap that, the utility could be accessed from the kitchen side which feels more typical, but can't see any benefits really, other than it being weird to have a utility off a dining room.

Why don't you have a U shape rather than L shape so that gives you more cupboard space. Also do you need two dining areas?

ipredictacarrot · 09/03/2021 12:07

Trying to avoid corner cupboards and fancied some seating that looks into the garden. Don't really need a seating area in the kitchen but I feel like there is room.

Have you thought about something similar to your original post, but with an overhang for a couple of barstools then replace the small table and chairs with a small sofa?

You've got the dining table to eat at, bar stools for a casual Coffee / breakfast on the go and somewhere to sit and look out to the garden?

You'd need to check out measurements and buy a small enough sofa or snug chair but you could probably do it without the big o pop angry unit...

babygrootandstarlord · 09/03/2021 13:55

I would go with the u shape but rotate the island in your second plan by 90 degrees and make it deeper, like daisydoesn't suggested. Can you include sink and dishwasher in the island (on the side facing the bottom of the u). Have the seating the opposite side. Then you can fit fridge on one side of the u and cupboards on the other, but it will slightly shorten the sides of the u so that the island doesn't feel crammed in?

Hopeandglory · 09/03/2021 20:49

when I was designing our kitchen I worked out how many units I could fit using a 600mm plan, I then worked out what I wanted, 2x dishwashers, 2x eyeleval ovens, smaller sink cupboard, smaller bin unit, sufficient storage, minimum of 1 metre around the island. I then went on to DIY kitchen planner and made loads of plans. I ended up with using 32inch wide but mid height floor cabinets against the back wall to store all crockery, glasses, breakfast items etc, and having the dishwashers, sink and bins on/under the island. I allowed for a 350mm overhang on the island for seating and allowed 450mm with for each island seat. I have a full sized intergrated fridge and fullsized intergrated freezer next to 2x single ovens with the hob ontop of pan drawers. My kitchen is great, I have loads of storage because I planned where everything was going, all work surfaces are clear because everything has a home (even put in a waste disposal unit because I can't stand the thought of food waste lying around and have a hot tap to dispense with kettle.
When I knew how I wanted the kitchen to be I priced it up with an independent kitchen manufacture and paid far less than anticipated which allowed me to have a quartz worktop, which I still find very cold!

If you are going to have handles which can either be vertical or horizontal or off centre eg on the left or right - then think about how they look - and if they can align to look neater - eg a central horizontal handle on a cupboard door - which is "wrong" but actually matches adjacent drawers-
you get used to it instantly and it looks so much better - not higgldy piggledy.

loveisagirlnameddaisy · 10/03/2021 06:53

Just came on to say that we only ever use our island for preparation, the counter tops barely get a look in. Depends on size, of course.

@Hopeandglory are you willing to share any pics / layout plan? Sounds brilliant!
