Area advice: south Leeds/ Wakefield

TheRaccoon · 19/02/2021 12:39

Can anyone suggest some nice towns/villages to live around south Leeds or Wakefield areas?

Things we’re looking for:

  • Nice community feel
  • Central area with shops/pubs/restaurants etc.
  • Parks for dog walks/kids play areas
  • Not far from motorway

Hopefully this isn’t an impossible ask!

Those areas tend to be quite deprived. Rothwell is better than most of the other options.

Where are you trying to get to? Might help people think of somewhere.

TheRaccoon · 19/02/2021 13:00

Thanks @ThePricklySheep - this is what I’ve found from my searches so far but I was hoping I’d missed something!

We’ve got family who live in Methley that we’d like to move closer to, my husband works on the road so needs to be near the M1 ideally!

We’re looking for a 4 bed for up to around £360k.

We’re in Cheshire at the moment and have been pretty spoilt in terms of having amenities on our doorstep, but we can’t afford the size house we need here unfortunately.

Horbury is nice. Small high street with doctors and dentist, pubs, shops, co-op supermarket, restaurants etc. Plenty of community activities (covid dependent, of course). Two primary schools and a high school. Nice big park with play area. 5 minute drive from M1.

We're in Ossett, next door to Horbury. It's a bit bigger but still a good community feel. Twice weekly market and plenty of small shops, co-op and Lidl, plenty of primary schools and a large high school. Gawthorpe (part of Ossett) has a lovely community feel, they have Mayday celebrations and the Coal Race which gets the whole community out. If you get into the actual village part rather than the council part, it's pretty nice. We lived there for years with no problems. Council have just built a new play area, there's woods to walk the dog in, primary school is outstanding.

What about Wetherby? Near the A1 and half an hour from Methley. That’s probably too far from Methley but I thought I’d throw it in.

BrokenCircle · 19/02/2021 13:16

Have you looked at Morley?

AnnaBegins · 19/02/2021 13:19

Morley! Friendliest town in the world. Have heard nice things about Ossett too though that was a few years ago.

Elemzee · 19/02/2021 13:27

Consider Garforth to the East of Leeds,
meets all of those criteria. Right next to the M1, 2 train stations to commute into Leeds city centre easily.

Buzzer3555 · 19/02/2021 13:47

Morley is lovely. You will get a good house there for that money too.

overwork · 19/02/2021 15:07

I came on to say Morley. Easy access to Leeds on public transport and to the M1 and you'd definitely get the house you want. I maybe wouldn't go as far as lovely but it has a lot of what you want.

overwork · 19/02/2021 15:07

Definitely get the house you want in your price point that should say!

overwork · 19/02/2021 15:08

Or perhaps Mirfield?

TheRaccoon · 19/02/2021 16:56

Thanks everyone, these suggestions are all brilliant! I am sitting on Rightmove for the rest of today Grin

I was going to say the same - quick enough to get to other bits of Leeds and ticks the other boxes.

I have family around Sandal / New Miller Dam which always seems very nice.

usernotfound0000 · 19/02/2021 17:12

Morley has some lovely parts and has good schools, good motorway access. Rothwell is lovely too but you don't get as much for your money. East Ardsley and Tingley are nice too.

Needsomethingtoread · 21/02/2021 08:46

I live in Whitwood and my children go to school in Methley. Its definitely on the up. Since we have been here there has been a vast improvement in the area. Most areas around here are not deprived as a pp said. There are a few big council estates but if you steer clear of them your fine. People around here are very friendly. Good luck in your search.

Have a look at oulton, swillington, Garforth, ackworth, pontefract.

There are some beautiful little villages that are close by amenities.

macaroninapot · 04/05/2021 17:07

Hi, I'm looking at these areas as well (I did search on here for Garforth) and just wondered how you got on OP or if anyone else has been looking?

There isn't a lot for sale in Garforth and it's pretty pricey so wondering if I should move a bit further out towards Wakefield. Morley gets mentioned a lot and what about Tingley ? Or even Wakefield itself?

Monkeytapper · 04/05/2021 17:10

Morley

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 04/05/2021 17:18

Morley, West Ardsley, Tingley, East Ardsley, Rothwell, Swillington, Garforth, Long Preston are all worth a look.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 04/05/2021 17:21

Great Preston I mean!

macaroninapot · 04/05/2021 17:31

Any idea what Kippax is like? Seems to be quite a few properties availabile there.

flashbac · 04/05/2021 18:20

Since when is Morley lovely? Has it improved considerably or something?

SilverLiningSearching · 04/05/2021 18:37

@macaroninapot Kippax is an old mining area, you have to be careful regarding subsidence round there.

It's been up and coming the past few years, still a few bargains to be had it looks like. Gentrification I guess.
SuperheroBirds · 08/05/2021 21:10

Roth well, Oulton, and Woodlesford are nice.
Garforth is a bit bigger and busier, but has more amenities.
