Area advice: south Leeds/ Wakefield

Can anyone suggest some nice towns/villages to live around south Leeds or Wakefield areas?

Things we’re looking for:

  • Nice community feel
  • Central area with shops/pubs/restaurants etc.
  • Parks for dog walks/kids play areas
  • Not far from motorway

Hopefully this isn’t an impossible ask!

Do you need schools?

Osset is on the M1. Outwood/stanley/Tingley areas either side are brilliantly placed for M1/M62/A1 access, plus trains.

The issue is the idea of central shops- most villages have lost any meaningful shopping areas, only the usual takeaways etc.

Rothwell and Normanton you get some lovely houses for your money, but schools are the issue. Outwood and Stanley have village centres with pubs and co-op, butchers, dr’s etc, but slightly more expensive as in catchment for better schools.

Most areas have parks, but you’re also near the transpennine trail so plenty of walks etc.

The biggest pull for us moving here is that motorway link and access to the main London train line means most of the country is easily accessible. Can be in central london in about 2 hours from our door- cab to wakey, 1:52 on the train. Plus Schools.

I live in this area and came on to say Morley or Ossett. Both nice places to live with a community feel and central area you're looking for. Morley has had a recent surge in new restaurants and bars alongside more established ones. I've also lived in Mirfield which was mentioned above. It's lovely but more expensive so your money won't go so far and it's further from motorways. Also, although it has a WF postcode it might not be exactly the south Leeds / Wakefield area you were thinking. If you're on Rightmove look at the WF3 postcode as this covers lots of areas close to M1/M62 too.
