Property behind a beer garden!

Hi all!

I’m looking to buy a house and the one I have found that I love backs onto a pub beer garden. I don’t mind a bit of noise as I’m a city girl but I’m wondering if this is a good idea? They close the outdoor area at 10pm. As the pubs are currently shut, I can’t hear the level of noise it would create. Any ideas on what I could do to find out ? Has anyone had or currently have the end of their garden backing onto a beer garden ? P.s. the house garden is quite small.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks 🙏🏽

Just seen your update. A rugby pub in Twickenham? Absolutely not.

DuesToTheDirt · 16/02/2021 14:41

I wouldn't.MIL is near a pub and although the noise doesn't seem to be excessive there is a strong smell of Sunday lunch every weekend.

TinyGlassOwl · 16/02/2021 15:05

Oh OP, come on! A rugby pub, in Twickenham - are you absolutely insane?! Grin

Kico99 · 16/02/2021 16:27

I know I only just found that out today 🙈 - I thought it was just a family friendly pub (it’s The Sussex Arms near Twickenham Green) but came to found out they also have a children’s play area and people do go for pre- and post- match pints/food. A local agent said it’s not known to be rowdy but of course I will get noise. I know it sounded obvious I just didn’t consider all the other points and with me not being into rugby I wasn’t sure how loud that would be but I used to follow footy so I’d imagine the same!

p.s. I’ve never used this forum before but I have to say it’s great! Smile

I wouldn't purely because of the cigarette smoke and the inevitable loud, obnoxious drunks.

TinyGlassOwl · 16/02/2021 16:46

Is it the 2-bed on Chestnut Road? (yes I am bored...)

MonochromeMinnie · 16/02/2021 16:49

Another one saying been there done that, wouldn't do it again. Noise, smell, the odd pint glass thrown into the garden, and that was a village pub not a rugby pub near Twickenham! And you will definitely struggle to sell.

Kico99 · 16/02/2021 16:52

Haha thanks TinyGlassOwl - yes chestnut road

I used to live a couple of minutes walk from there! But opened your thread as I am now a couple of hundred miles away, and thinking about renting a place that backs on to a beer garden, so was wondering what people think on the issue. My reluctance is, that although the pub up here seems quiet enough now, it's the future that may be an issue - pubs change character, and quiet pubs become noisier pubs. Nice pubs become less so! And for me, it's only renting for now, so much less committed.

Is it this one? Because it’s lovely. But god the price..

There’s a pub behind my garden. In the summer it can be a nightmare. Especially when they have their live music festival. Saying that, we’ve grown used to it and it only bothers us occasionally now. Would I choose to live by another pub? Absolutely not! I miss summer evenings enjoying a quiet glass of wine in my garden. Hardly relaxing when there’s 50 people drinking just feet from the back fence. Hmm

RubyViolet · 16/02/2021 19:28

The noise of glass bottles being tipped into the recycling bins after closing time and in the morning. That’s a noise you can hear streets away. So loud.
The urine, the fag smoke, the noise, the taxis standing and waiting with their engines running outside your bedroom window. The car doors.
This takes me back, the horror !

JohnMiddleNameRedactedSwanson · 16/02/2021 19:33

OP, do you know Twickenham well? Have you been on a pre-pandemic match day?

DenisetheMenace · 16/02/2021 19:39

Now, if you’d said it was a rugby pub in Twickenham, my husband and offspring would probably be fighting you for it!

DenisetheMenace · 16/02/2021 19:39
  • I would not!
TeachesOfPeaches · 16/02/2021 19:44

My gran lives near Wembley stadium and it is hideous on match days. Blokes start filling out the pubs early morning then in the streets shouting and singing etc until evening .

Google reviews of the pub for a feel of what it's like

JohnMiddleNameRedactedSwanson · 16/02/2021 19:47

Twickenham on match day is very different to Wembley. The atmosphere is almost always positive and there is very very rarely any trouble.

However there are rivers of piss and lots of drunken singing etc. My sister lives there and had an outdoor tap fitted to the front of the house so she could just sluice the front path and wall the next day.

TeachesOfPeaches · 16/02/2021 19:48

It has live acoustic and vinyl nights !

Thanks all, I know Twickenham quite well, more so Richmond but no I’ve never been there on a match day (although I have been stuck in traffic travelling through there before!) I’m not worried about the urine, vomit risks etc as it’s not that type of pub and demographic is older (for now as some of you say this could change hands in the future!). Plus this house in on the side road & a cul-de-sac so I don’t think that would occur. It’s really just the beer garden which yep seems like a bad idea re. noise levels ! I’ve been informed only noise complaints do get raised every now and then but that’s enough to put anyone off am I right?! Wink

How near to the stadium and train station is it? (I may have missed a map). The few times I've been there for the Rugby its been a wall of people between the two, every pub filled, food stands and memorabilia stands everywhere...

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 16/02/2021 20:09

And portaloos on the side streets. With long queues.

TinyGlassOwl · 16/02/2021 20:10

OP it's a lovely house (sorry for outing it Grin) but I still think having the beer garden at the back would get old really really fast.

Imagine what it will be like when we're finally allowed back in pubs and England are playing or something...absolutely bonkers. Probably good-natured and relatively well-behaved, but bonkers nonetheless.

tired10022 · 16/02/2021 20:34

I used to live opposite to a quiet pub's beer garden but it used to wind me up something chronic in the summer always felt a bit like it was lots of people intruding into my own space even with high fences/hedges.
