Why isn’t my house selling?

slithytoveisascientist · 10/02/2021 22:02

Please can you help?

We have been on since I think October, had only 2 viewings and one offer of £317k which was withdrawn as it was the top end of their budget - we wouldn’t have accepted anyway.

Most other houses locally seem to be moving really fast. Would appreciate guidance.

If there is a wallpaper that isn’t stylistically offensive I could use to cover the existing paper I would love a recommendation

Ditto for living room curtains
Living room art or mirror

Kitchen table (2 seater and not circular please)

Over bed art

Thank you all! I’m going to carry on taking pics too

I was thinking to pop a bistro table where the black drop down table used to be - see this pic

But something much lighter and with chairs tucked in and with cushions on

@bilbodog

Dont put up wallpaper - just paint a neutral shade that everyone could live with. Add colour and patterns with curtains, cushions and throws.
I agree! Your wallpaper is a bit dated but at least neutral. Some wallpaper can put people off, so unless you're going to strip and paint the room, I'd leave it.

The thing you need to spend money on is pops of color- art for the wall, beautiful cushions and luxurious throws. Plus, you can take them with you! Bonus! Lose the flat aged looking cushions and replace them with some bouncy new cushions in wonderful colours and patterns.

Chambored · 13/02/2021 02:04

I’m not sure you need a bistro set when you’ve got a perfectly normal big functioning dining table next door (assuming you swap the rooms back).
I think your kitchen is absolutely fine as it is (in the pics you have posted / the video; the agent’s pics make it look more dated than it is).
It is a bit sparse / too de-cluttered though. So I think you and other posters have made some good suggestions re plants / herbs, chopping board, tea caddies etc...Just to add some colour / interest. Maybe something on the wall and maybe a cheap blind too.

Chambored · 13/02/2021 02:08

@slithytoveisascientist

Driveway
This pic of the front of your house is way better than the one the agent took. When you relist make sure you’re on hand to be the photographer’s assistant and do a similar shot (minus the car)

@slithytoveisascientist

Living room at the moment
The pics aren’t posting in the quotes. But in this pic, the blue curtain, the blue stripe in the wallpaper and the carpet go far better than they do in the agent’s pic.

So again, if you find a few things to pull the room together I’m not sure you need to repaint / wallpaper.
Eg : that Dunelm rug you posted would be fine (so long as you get a big enough one to cover a decent chunk of the carpet)
Get new cushion inners from Ikea; get some throws from Ikea to drape on the end of the sofa (Insta-style) and on the pouffe as the other poster suggested. Get some new blue cushion covers, possibly from Ikea to tie it all together.
A big mirror above the sofa.
You could keep the coffee table, but again look on Instagram on how to ‘dress’ it (sounds wanky!!) but you know what I mean...
Stick your plants back in. Buy some more. Put some candles out.

I must be easily pleased because I see nothing wrong with OPs house. I'm not a fan of newer homes but aside from that the house looks like a blank canvas to me.

I can see past the OPs furnishings. Judging by the responses looks like everyone else can't.

RuledbyASD · 13/02/2021 12:04

It's a beautiful house but it's very very dated in style.

You mean it doesn’t look like Mrs Hinch’s grey monstrosity?

But not all of us like - or even know - what’s “on trend”. I’m sure you love your pink kitchen, I’d hate it with a passion.

Bythemillpond · 13/02/2021 14:36

I think just painting the walls white and have wooden flooring in all the rooms down stairs would up date it.
It isn’t about everything being shades of grey.

@slithytoveisascientist I really don't think you need to re-wallpaper your lounge or the yellow bedroom. But if you want to then just stick to something light, subtle and inoffensive (because you are never going to get something that suits everyones tastes).

Something in similar style to this in the lounge: www.wilko.com/en-uk/superfresco-easy-aura-grey-wallpaper/p/0450110

Or maybe this (a bit more stripey like you have currently) : www.wilko.com/en-uk/sublime-dappled-trees-wallpaper-greysilver/p/0489422

And for the yellow kids room:www.wilko.com/en-uk/wilko-wallpaper-country-check-grey/p/0478302

Or in grey and yellow www.wilko.com/en-uk/wilko-wallpaper-country-check-yellow/p/0478300

Or maybe this:www.wilko.com/en-uk/superfresco-wallpaper-scandi-leaf-yellow/p/0478340

Obviously you don't need to use Wilko, but I don't think it's a good idea to spend too much. Just look for a fairly simple/subtle pattern with a lot of white in it so it "lifts" the room.

DNHandTNS · 13/02/2021 16:21

If you like yellow and wanted a coordinated , bright and fresh look for your lounge OP, you could consider something like these curtains with matching cushions and a matching feature wall. You can even get a table runner and could add plants and some homely touches. www.spoonflower.com/en/home-decor/living-decor/curtains/10676704

I suggested this because yellow is a happy colour and would feel positive to viewers, but there are really any number of possibilities.
This rabbit is so cute! www.giftsfromhandpicked.co.uk/novelty-and-fun-gift-ideas/heaven-sends-bristle-rabbit-easter-home-decoration.html and would be appealing to kids and make adults smile too (it's a family home)
This is a really cute thing you could make with your kids and it would lend a real charm to your house, making it feel like somewhere people could "nest" www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/703756168635699/ If it's a family home, you want it to look like a happy place for kids.

I'd go for beautiful flowers that pick out your decor colour such as these (if you even like yellow) www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/13088655149557128/

Ultimately, your living room needs to look like it's for living in, spending fun time in , somewhere people feel could be a happy place for the family. I'm not an expert, but I'd focus on having fun with your kids and letting it show. At the moment the lounge looks like no kids live there.

If you don't like yellow, I'd suggest you pick a different color and design of curtain, cushion and table runner with matching wallpaper to give your lounge a coordinated lift. You could add bouquets of catkins, cherry blossom or other spring flowers to really bring out the colors of your chosen decor. A few pieces of art in your chosen colour would be ace.

Focus on making it feel welcoming, like when you go to an Air B&B and theres all kinds of imaginative touches that make you smile and feel happy and relaxed immediately.

DNHandTNS · 13/02/2021 16:42

This is lovely and fun if you have an old pair of wellies and a bit of time www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/183803228516609997/
Just to add some color and make people smile.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 13/02/2021 17:08

OP, as for the rug and mirror for the lounge - perhaps something cheap and simple like this (in various sizes):
www.dunelm.com/product/indulgence-shaggy-rug-1000087020?colour=Indulgence+White&defaultSkuId=30714989&rugSize=120cm+x+170cm+%2847%22+x+67%22%29

and something similar to this (again available in 2 sizes) but check that it can be hung horizontally : www.dunelm.com/product/oram-wall-mirror-105x75cm-1000107037?defaultSkuId=30286657

For the kitchen table, I liked the black table/chairs you had in there before - do you still have it?, if not I'd try to find something similar style, perhaps in white (to match your walls and tiles). Ikea do a few fairly reasonably priced small dining tables that you could pair with cheaper chairs (perhaps in whatever accent colour you choose):
www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/vangsta-extendable-table-white-00375126/
www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/nordviken-drop-leaf-table-white-50368717/

Hope this helps, but as I said before I think its the poor photos that are the big problem, rather than your decor!

Onlinedilema · 13/02/2021 17:19

Late to the party but I think your home looks lovely. I have no idea what else is available and at what price though.

DNHandTNS · 13/02/2021 19:02

@Handsoffstrikesagain

Totally agree bythemillpond. I’m not a huge fan of grey tbh. I like it in small doses but it’s still extremely popular and a lot of people do like gloss grey kitchens, shiny floor tiles etc. It’s not everyone’s taste but it commands a huge share of the market.
Grey "Mrs Hinch style" homes do seem very popular in certain groups on Facebook. I feel it's very cliché and unimaginative.
Changemaname1 · 13/02/2021 19:19

I think it’s lovely
If it’s in the right price range then I’m not sure what else you can do , could just be due to lockdown ?

People seem to get very caught up in decorative stuff when commenting but honestly for me if a house is the right size , location , price And doesn’t need any major work they should sell regardless of the colour of a wall
