Ugly bathroom ideas

What would you do to improve this bathroom (on a budget)? Paint? New cabinet handles? New taps?

My eyes just keep coming back to the brown of the cabinet and the blah mirror but just not sure what to do about it.

Thanks! Smile

Easy option: paint it and get a blind. The mirror is too small for the vanity. It should be the same length. The floor tiles are very dated. Too small. Big format would look way better. This feels like a hybrid bathroom. New white loo and sink within an older bathroom. Without spending a lot it’s difficult to make it wow!

Chumleymouse · 25/01/2021 16:35

I think it looks nice. What’s wrong with lipstick on a pig ? Miss piggy pulled it off 😀👍

Persipan · 25/01/2021 17:17

TBH I can't really see anything wrong with it. I was at the very least expecting an avocado bath suite with that title!

uglybathroom · 25/01/2021 22:25

Thanks everyone for all the ideas. Yes it's my bathroom, I don't understand why it wouldn't be?! There are two in the house exactly the same. I like everything but the bathrooms really.

I've been trying to figure out whether new taps (in black?) with new handles and a mirror frame would change the look, or if the cabinets will stand out too much anyway.
I could try and change the cabinets but like someone else mentioned the mosaic tiling is still there! And harder to change.

I wasn't expecting to buy a new build. I thought we'd buy something with character so it's not really my dream bathroom, but we'll be living here for ages.

Can you paint the walls in a darker colour to give it some depth and then change the mirror for a framed one?

uglybathroom · 25/01/2021 22:33

@MaizeBlouse

I'd paint the walls in pigeon by farrow and ball (colour match, obvs). Leave the sink cabinet as is. Small jute rug on the floor in front of the sink, preferably a circular shape to break up all the straight lines.

Get a small circular marble tray and a woven storage basket to go on top to keeo hair ties or something in. Buy naice hand soap and have it on a dish by the taps. Lovely big plant in a nice plant pot too.

A3 Mattise style print on the wall in a walnut frame.
That'd do the trick I think!

Thank you. Love these ideas

It's a mock up of a new bathroom isn't it? The bottom of the cabinets are flat to the wall, same line as the toilet, so it's not an actual photo.
Are you able to choose different tiles/ doors before you move in?

uglybathroom · 25/01/2021 22:35

@YippeeKayakOtherBuckets

Well I’d try to change the weird Esther effect where the units meet the floor for a start.

It’s a mock up? If you don’t like it, change the design.

Am I missing something?

Were you meaning if it hadn't yet been built to change it?

Yes! It's not even old that's the sad thing. I don't get why they chose the floor tiles and the brown and mosaic seems so outdated but yet it's been done recently.

No it's my real bathroom. I don't know why it looks like a mock??! It's just a photo I saved from when we viewed, and I've then screen shot it and cut it down to remove details so it's a bit blurry.

What about putting patterned lino over the floor? Change handles, either take mirror down and replace with vintage or round one (IKEA do nice round ones with wood frames) or follow pp’s suggestion of adding a frame to it, add plants, wooden peg rail maybe - get some natural fibres in there! And there is such a thing as tile paint - it’s a bit crap but if you’re only painting the mosaic tiles white to blend in then might last better than when I painted a whole wall of tiles with it! Or if your budget extends to removing tiles, either replace with ones you like or replace with panelling painted in colour of your choice.

And a bathroom bin and a toilet brush to upset mnetters.

@YippeeKayakOtherBuckets did you mean Escher Grin?

soundofsilence1 · 26/01/2021 05:24

I think the main issues are the combination of colours (white, beige and brown) and the symmetry, I don't like how the mirror follows a different line to the window.

I would definitely get rid of the magnolia, change for white or a stronger colour and would probably get a mirror with a wooden frame to line up with the top of the window and match the cabinets.

I would add either a roman blind or shutters to the window and some plants. I would not bother xhanging taps for black as these just show up limescale and I think I would concentrate on changing larger things e.g floor or mosaic if budget allows.

Have a look at Jes Rose Vinyl if you don’t like you’re cupboard doors finish as a quick easy fix

SofiaAmes · 26/01/2021 05:51

How about a wall decal like this or this or this
The options are endless and they are cheap and if you get bored, take it off and do a new one.

jazzyh · 26/01/2021 06:05

Yes to Jes Rose vinyl! If you're on Instagram look her up for lots of inspo.

We have got the same tile border but in slate and I'm not a fan either. We used tile paint on it a couple of years ago and it's actually held up really well! I think like someone else said, as it's such a small area you can get away with it...

Porridgeoat · 26/01/2021 07:39

Like the minimalist mirror and sink. The floor tiles are awful though. A navy herringbone pattern and then some funky towels would help

Yeah I gave up trying to type it and slunk off. I also looked at the photo on a bigger screen and figured out the effect is because it’s a floating cabinet. Blush

PresentingPercy · 26/01/2021 09:28

I’m very surprised anyone used those tiles on the floor. Much larger format would have made a huge difference. You could try a mirror cabinet over the vanity but get it the same length as the vanity. The border is obviously dated so I think this bathroom was “designed” by an older person! Or one who doesn’t ever look at KBB or similar magazines!

Yes, a big plant, blinds and a different paint could help. Does the vanity have a manufacturer? Could the doors be changed? I actually think you could work around brown but please don’t buy a black tap!!! A top quality vinyl floor might help. Make it large format if it’s tiles though!

CeibaTree · 26/01/2021 09:33

I'd change the floor to something like this - I think that'd make a huge difference.

These units and ideas are from Duravit. They sell dark brown vanity Units and in their “bathrooms” they look stunning. Obviously the design is difficult to replicate in a bathroom already built but it gives a few pointers.

I do have a brown bathroom. It uses Porcelanosa tiles on the floor and walls which are called Shine Dark on the walls and Matt on the floor. So it’s a bit like the brown tiled bathroom. I still love it 10 years after it was built. We have used Duravit fittings. The tiles have grey in them and as it’s an en suite it leads into a grey carpeted bedroom.

These are from Porcelanosa. Obviously very expensive but there are possibilities with brown!

Also the wall look magnolia which isn’t a modern colour. Better go with off white
