Do you have a hob on your island?

Does it work well? Do you hate it?

Planning our new kitchen. I wanted the island clear but might have to compromise and have a hob on it.

@YouCanWorkItOut Thanks. Not one I'm familar with, though Envirovent is part of Soler & Palau, which make some very quiet and high-quality models.

I usually prefer a canopy to catch the rising steam, and a washable grease filter. I see yours has a different method of trapping dirt.

I once had a Dimplex kitchen ventilator with a similar spinning drum impellor, and a washable gauze trap; it was stunningly quiet.

I have the Neff hob with in built extractor in a large island. It works really well. Chose the Neff over the Bora as I like that it came with the cast iron cover for the extractor.

weasle · 16/01/2021 17:47

Thanks for all your pictures and tips. Our planned island is only 1800x1100 including hob but don't plan to have seating at island as table next to it. Maybe I'll regret the no stools but I'd rather have drawers on the other side for storage.

minipie · 16/01/2021 17:49

@LittleOverwhelmed can I suggest that, if at all possible, you increase the size of the worktop to the left of your hob? We have a similar set up to you, we were going to make that space 300mm but bumped it up to 480mm and I’m so glad we did. 300 isn’t enough space to do much with whereas 480 gives us enough space for a chopping board, plating up, a big platter or oven dish etc. Could you perhaps make the left hand drawers 1000 and the middle ones 600 so you can shift the hob over a little - I know it messes with the symmetry though...

weasle · 16/01/2021 17:49

@alpinia what space underneath the hob and extractor is needed for the Neff?

alpinia · 16/01/2021 18:02

It sits in the top drawer. It's about 50 x 40cm then there is the recirculation bit that fits inside the island and takes no space away from the drawers. We can still use a bit more than half of the top drawer. I've been really impressed with it. And it all just goes in the dishwasher. Every 10 days or so it asks to be washed.

Yes you are right. I misread the dotted line. So it’s ok. Apologies.

Remmy123 · 17/01/2021 10:35

Hob is better than a sink - however I'd really try and re work the kitchen so island is clear - we had same issue but managed to change layout

Remmy123 · 17/01/2021 10:38

@jitterbugintomybrain yes I have V4 wood herringbone in large open plan kitchen ... love it!!!

PanamaPattie · 17/01/2021 10:42

Clear island for me. A sink or hob just attracts mess and clutter.

I find the hob is the less messy part of my island as it is the only part that people can't dump things on!

I can see that about a sink but we don't have clutter on our existing hob so not sure we would be cluttering it up if it was on an island. I'd love it to be clear but it would mean squashing the sink and hob up and I think that would not look right either.

Ooh - you don't have any pictures do you? Understand if you'd rather not.

Kitchen designer here. If you have to have anything appliance/sink wise in your island imo definitely better to have a venting hob rather than sink. If it’s big enough to have a good distance from any seating much better than having washing up and tap etc on it. Venting hobs although expensive are very good and less visually obvious than the downdraft (and take up less room with all the workings). Or box in an extractor above. Smile

LazyDoll · 17/01/2021 13:45

Good pan drawers underneath should keep all the clutter at bay too.

jitterbugintomybrain · 17/01/2021 17:36

Thanks LazyDoll. I want a venting hob that is very discrete and smooth looking. Is there one that you would recommend?

Here is my herringbone floor, it’s actually not wood but a porcelain and plastic composite and I love it.(excuse the slippers!) @jitterbugintomybrain

LockdownLove · 17/01/2021 18:40

@jitterbugintomybrain

I'd get the extractor that's part of the hob so no hood needed. Supposed to work well.
I have one like that in the middle of my island. Works like a treat and avoids having to have a large fan overhead.

Can highly recommend it.

jitterbugintomybrain · 17/01/2021 21:31

Can't believe it's not wood, Butter! Looks great.

Thanks Lockdown, just need to find the right one that I like the look of.

We have a contract with BSH so tend to install the Neff N90 vented hob but I love the aesthetic of the Elica ones. Very streamlined! It’s lovely seeing all your beautiful kitchens. I’m part furloughed and missing designing at the moment.

jitterbugintomybrain · 17/01/2021 23:13

Thanks LazyDoll, I'll check it out.
