Do you have a hob on your island?

Does it work well? Do you hate it?

Planning our new kitchen. I wanted the island clear but might have to compromise and have a hob on it.

This is our Bora induction hob and in built extractor fan. We love it! It’s very effective and I love being able to chat to the family sat at the island or watching tv.

We have a job with inbuilt extractor fan on our island and it's fab. You can cook and talk to people. Definitely do not put a sink on your island IMO. Sinks are always messy places.

Chewbecca · 16/01/2021 11:32

mummydoctor your room is beautiful, I love the little details like the plants on the wall.

cashmerecardigans · 16/01/2021 11:34

Yes, love it and would do the same again. I have a downdraught extractor that is vented under the floor, so it means the room has really clean lines. Plus I'm quite tall so was forever bumping my head on the stupid previous extractor

Wow love your kitchen! I can't see an extractor. Is it well hidden?

If it's vented under the floor would that affect the underfloor heating?

Thank you - we had it done last spring/summer when we extended the house. This photo shows the extractor - it’s easy to clean (goes in dishwasher when needed) and very effective at trapping steam and grease. The top drawer is a dummy drawer as it sits under the worktop. The extractor sits flush with the hob.

Ah thanks, so the extractor is round and in the middle. The ones I've looked at look like they are thin rectangles that fit at the back. I wanted a 5 pan one so not sure a round one would work for us.

Does food splatter on the floor? Especially sauces or fried stuff?
RebelGeek76 · 16/01/2021 12:45

I'm glad I came across this thread, our designer advised us not to have hob on island as we're also wanting seating the opposite side, similar to yours @LittleOverwhelmed but ours will be a little smaller at 2400mm x 1200mm. My OH is not so keen on cooker hoods if we were to put the hob on the wall run of units and sink on island, and I don't fancy having my back to everyone whilst cooking plus thinking of the messy dishes on the island!

Those that have their hob island or planning, do you think a 1200mm depth would be deep enough to avoid splashes?

carrotcake124 · 16/01/2021 12:51

We just had a new kitchen out in and when we designed it I insisted I wanted a clear island. The kitchen designer and friends kept saying I should put the hob on it. My husband couldn't understand why I wanted a clear island.

We had a delay of 4 weeks while we waited for worktops and we had a temporary hob set up on the island and we are so glad we didn't go for the hob on the island as there was so much splatter from pasta sauces or curries or even fried eggs. I had a covered cake stand at the centre of the island with the Christmas cake and the glass was covered in sauce and fat splatters.

It was nice to cook facing the room but I now use the island for prep and chopping and love the kids sitting around it while I am cooking playing or doing school work ( and i don't have to worry about food splatters )

Mummydoctor · 16/01/2021 12:57

@lboogy I’ve not had a problem with significant splatter but I guess it depends on how and what you cook. I keep the temperature down or use a lid to avoid splattering foods getting on the island now abs previously on our splash back in the old kitchen. Have never had any issues with splatter on the floor.

Mummydoctor · 16/01/2021 12:59

We also looked at a neff one which had 5 burners and rectangular in built extractor but it didn’t sit flush with the hob so we preferred this one. You can also get different colour inserts if you like a bit of colour!

Mummydoctor · 16/01/2021 13:00

@RebelGeek76 our island is 97cm wide and 208cm long

minipie · 16/01/2021 13:56

@Thecazelets

Yes. Induction hob with extractor in ceiling above. The island is huge though so no risk to people sitting at the stools on the other side. I'd be less keen if it was smaller. It's very sociable - I'd hate to cook facing the wall now. Much better than having your sink on the island imo.
Exactly the same here
iknowimcoming · 16/01/2021 13:59

This is mine (and about as messy as it ever gets thanks to DH frying bacon for lunch) the white strip is a light but we rarely use it tbh

WhatAMessWeAreIn · 16/01/2021 14:03

This is ours or at least very similar. It's slightly fragile as my son managed to knock a heavy vase into it and cracked it in the first few weeks but we can't afford to replace it but I guess that's the same with any glass hob. This is a cheaper type, the kitchen guy said you can pay £££. It wasn't worth it for our kitchen. 6 months on and all good. I don't fine it particularly messy or splattery.

I suppose it doesn't make the island pristine but given the reality of family life this was never going to be achievable anyway. I think I prefer having the sink against the wall and the hob in the middle. More sociable (or hopefully one day it will be!).

YouCanWorkItOut · 16/01/2021 14:07

We do! And like a PP we didn’t bother with big extraction. We have a small powerful extraction thing on the ceiling which is unnoticeable and we open a window if necessary. @PigletJohn recommended it I believe.

In an absolutely ideal world I would have had a clear island but that wasn’t going to work with the space we have, and better hob than sink. We don’t have any stools opposite the hob, they are the other end. No issue at all with splatters or anything and I cook a lot and fry a lot?

PigletJohn · 16/01/2021 14:34

@YouCanWorkItOut

can you show us a photo of your extractor please? I'd be interested to see which one it ie.

What size is the kitchen?

ButterMeUpScotty · 16/01/2021 14:36

The extractor is the bit in the middle and it works brilliantly. I didn’t want stools at mine because I have amazing views over the mountains from my island so didn’t want anyone’s big head blocking them!

So whilst we are talking kitchens, anyone get a herringbone engineered wood floor? I think I want that as it's going to be over quite a large area and going into the hall.

So many things to decide.
