Do you have a hob on your island?

Does it work well? Do you hate it?

Planning our new kitchen. I wanted the island clear but might have to compromise and have a hob on it.

We are about to order our new kitchen with hob in island. We seem to always have quite a few scraps of washing up despite dishwasher so I think hob on show better than sink.

I have just changed plan from down draft extractor to a flush ceiling one as I was told I'd lose cupboard space with downdraft and also a bit of work surface is lost. I didn't consider the integrated hob extractor as thought I couldn't have any working drawers at all underneath. Is that correct?

lboogy · 16/01/2021 15:53

I'm loving all the kitchens. @Mummydoctor love the colour you chose. I see all the cookers on the island are the electric ones. Did none of you want a gas cooker or are those not recommended in an island ?

Does the extractor suck up smells? I never turn on my extractor despite having open plan living. Most of the smells are gone by the next day

YouCanWorkItOut · 16/01/2021 15:58

It’s this one. Could probably find the order details if needed? Sorry if that’s not what you would recommend @PigletJohn and I’ve taken your name in vain!!
Total kitchen diner size is 5x6m

YouCanWorkItOut · 16/01/2021 15:59

We have a vaulted ceiling so it’s high up

PigletJohn · 16/01/2021 16:00

I don't think I recognise that. Do you know the make/model?

YouCanWorkItOut · 16/01/2021 16:01

Pic of it in situ to give note of an idea

We don’t have gas where I live but I would not have a gas hob anyway. I think the beauty of having an induction hob is that it’s seamless when in the work surface. One wipe and it’s clean. I have gas in a flat and the hob always needs cleaning and it’s more difficult to do. So even if you have gas, have an induction hob on an island where you can see it.

I have an oven under mine. Also another oven at eye level in a wall run of units. I prep a lot on the island which is over 3m long. I have my smaller veg prep sink at the end near the fridges. I also have built in recycling and standard bins in the island as well as cupboards and pan drawers. At the end is a circular seating area so everyone can chat and eat informally.

We got Building regs sign off when we had wiring installed for an overhead extractor. We have a vaulted ceiling with oak beams and glass. We didn’t instal it! We didn’t go with downdraft either. This would have fitted between the units down the middle of the island. We don’t have any extraction at all. I never notice and it’s a big kitchen. I just open a roof section if I need to.

Lastly: make sure you have sockets in the island somewhere. Handy for prep (mixer, slicer, blender etc) and anyone sitting at the island.

Thanks Littleoverwhelmed
Is the motor under the floor completely then? And where is tubing to it?

Lots of people are moving away from gas hobs. Induction is so versatile that even serious cooks who worry about getting a wok hot enough can be happy with an induction hob.

My hob is on the island as I was totally and utterly sick of not being able to properly contribute to conversations when I was entertaining because I was always facing the wall stirring/ faffing with stuff on the hob.

it works well for me.

I've got a ceiling mounted elicia extractor which functions well.

Mummydoctor · 16/01/2021 17:05

@GreenTiles22 they’re gorgeous aren’t they?! Come in various colours from danetti - not cheap but very good quality and easy to wipe clean so far.

@lboogy yes the fan seems to extract the smells effectively too - good job as we love cooking including Indian food.

@LittleOverwhelmed it’s a great mix of colours - we bought the kitchen from a local kitchen company - the periphery cupboards are a very light grey and the island is like a military blue (no idea what it’s called sorry). The floor is classic oak karndean and the feature wall is sooty’s lashes.

Mummydoctor · 16/01/2021 17:06

I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about induction as always had gas, but it’s bloody brilliant! Easy to clean, heats quickly and easy to control. I wouldn’t go back to gas now!

PresentingPercy · 16/01/2021 17:09

Your hob position is only 300mm away from the hob!! That’s very dangerous. Mine is over 600. That’s not safe for children. Why isn’t the island 1200 like the cupboard?

I know brushing by pans on a hob might not feel safe either but you are not sitting virtually on top of boiling water. My island is 1300 deep with electrics in the void. You could safely sit 600 mm away.

PresentingPercy · 16/01/2021 17:10

Your sitting position is only 300 mm away from the hob - that should say!

Sunflowergirl1 · 16/01/2021 17:11

I have an is,and slightly bigger than yours. The original design had the job in it and I removed it. I'm so pleased I did. What I also did was rearranged the under island units to have two chairs at one side and two at the end which gives a feel for 4 people being able to sit and face each other rather than feeling like they are sat waiting for the firing squad!

If you can avoid the hob I would.. large island is a fab social space.

soundofsilence1 · 16/01/2021 17:12

The other issue with gas is that you can't have a downdraft extractor. We have the same bora with integrated extractor as mummydoctor and it works brilliantly for both steam and smells. I recommend having it vented externally rather than recirculating. Our island is 1.2m wide and there is plenty of room to sit behind the hob.

iknowimcoming · 16/01/2021 17:15

Here's mine with the extractor away

Do you have a hob on your island?
PresentingPercy · 16/01/2021 17:18

Yes but this one is 900. That’s not wide enough.

I don’t like cooking and staring at a wall when I can look over my garden. An island hob is great if it’s well planned.

iknowimcoming · 16/01/2021 17:18

@PresentingPercy I think you're misreading those plans, the worktop is 1200 with the stools underneath so the sitting position is 600 mm from the hob the way I look at it

AuntyFungal · 16/01/2021 17:21

@weasle

The Bora X Pure - fits into a standard cab & allows you to have full depth drawers. The price is punchy but once you buy hob + sep extractor + fitting = about the same as Bora hob. Or at least that’s how I’m justifying it! Grin
