Dishwasher yes or no ?

Looking at redoing the kitchen but I'm not sure if we should add a dishwasher. We have never had one before so never missed one. I'm not sure if it's worth adding ? The people who I know have them don't seem to use them much . Seemed like abit if a faf to me but thought it's worth getting some ideas .

@chocolatesaltyballs22

OMG yes - who doesn't have one!?
ME

& I can't decide if I want one or not!

I live alone. I'm currently putting a new, very small, kitchen in. I'd have to lose another cupboard (had to lose a couple already and started off with no where near enough 🤦🏻‍♀️

I can literally only fit in a slimline
I don't have loads of expensive items, but I'm very attached to the kitchen things I do have - many of them I have bought on trips etc. Or just attached because I've had them a long time.

I'd be happy with a dirty dishes cupboard 🤣. I HATE things being 'on the side' I don't enjoy washing the dishes, but I can live with doing it.

The dishwashers I had in the past dulled glasses & destroyed mugs. I have things like Wrendale Mugs & nice glasses I don't want ruined.

I also found plastic containers got ruined and never bloody dried in the DW

IF I get one it'll be a slimline with a cutlery tray. (Probably Neff).

Arghhhhh just not sure what to do. I don't want to spend a small fortune on one, waste a cupboard space & only use it to store dirty mugs! 🤣

I'm really quite surprised at how one sided the opinions are! I bought s small dishwasher about 12 years ago when my kids were very young and used it most days. As time went on I just reverted back to washing, drying and then putting them away after meals to get it all out if the way.
We moved house about 5 years after we bought the dishwasher and left it for the new owners (they agreed, I didn't just leave my crap lol). I still don't have another one and really do not miss it. I'm obviously a weirdo 😄

Well that's what happens when you put items that aren't dishwasher safe, in a dishwasher.... Wink

Smallgoon · 12/11/2020 20:20

@Tomcullenisahero I just find having one far more hygienic. That was reason enough for me, rather than the novelty of not having to wash up. Mugs/dishes needs to be washed in very hot water.

gingercat02 · 12/11/2020 20:24

God yes. No question

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 12/11/2020 21:32

@Topseyt

Contrary to what some people believe, they do not fill to the very top with water

Please tell me that you're joking that anyone actually thinks that???

Tupperware brand products purchased after September 3, 1979, can be safely washed in the dishwasher

No need for your sark!

Gojetter95 · 12/11/2020 21:41

I didnt use mine much until after I had kids (just for big events/cooking sessions), now its on at least every other day.

dalrympy · 12/11/2020 22:16

Got one for the first time this year. Has changed my life. I used to spend so much time washing up that I didn't have much motivation for any other housework.

Plus no random tea cups on the side etc

I can't reiterate enough how much you need one!

DontCryForMeNextdoorNeighbour · 12/11/2020 22:21

YES omg YES

Solina · 12/11/2020 22:29

Glad to see you are getting one.
I hate washing up the dishes with passion. So much so that when we moved in and only had one water connection before we got round to sorting it so we would have two I asked for the dishwasher to be plugged in rather than the washing machine.
Everything goes in the machine in our house.

ForeverBubblegum · 12/11/2020 22:42

I'm also a lover of the dishwasher, we live without a tumble dryer so that we can fit one in our kitchen.

Officebox · 12/11/2020 22:59

Big tea drinking house here. Dishwasher cleans the tea stained cups so they’re like new again!

4Minions2CallMyOwn · 12/11/2020 23:06

I stumbled across this post and am amazed at the responses. Having not grown up with one I never realised I need one this badly- especially as I hate washing up and have 4 children! I’m super converted and need one NOW!!!!

Can anyone give any recommendations please? I know nothing about good brands or what to look for apart from black and normal size Blush

safariboot · 12/11/2020 23:09

100%. Life's too short for washing up. If a full won't fit then make space for a slim one.

Though there's always stuff that can't go in.

TheDogsMother · 12/11/2020 23:15

I always thought they weren't necessary and we could keep washing up by hand. I changed my mind quite a few years ago and I would never have a kitchen without one again. Game changer.

yikesanotherbooboo · 12/11/2020 23:21

A dishwasher is a great time saver and helps to keep the kitchen surfaces tidy. It's a cupboard for dirty dishes. We got one when I had 2 young children and was working. I had started to feel chained to the kitchen sink when I was at home with drink after meal after drink after meal.... I absolutely love it and many years later would not be without. I have never had a tumble drier and although I now have a microwave i wouldn't miss it for a second if it wasn't there but o would

yikesanotherbooboo · 12/11/2020 23:22

Posted too soon; I would always have a dishwasher now

There was a thread on here a couple of years ago about adding stuff to the dishwasher once the programme was started.

A number of posters expressed amazement that this was possible because surely if you opened it then this massive amount of water would fall out and flood the whole kitchen floor. They seemed genuinely perplexed that the water was only in the base of the machine.

echt · 13/11/2020 05:26

OMG an absolute necessity. And I live on my own.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/11/2020 08:47

We’ve had one for ever, can’t imagine being without.

When downsizing, my widowed DM had a half-size one installed in her ‘new’ house. When someone asked why she’d want or need one, living alone, there was a very sharp reply: ‘If you really think I’m going to start washing up again now...!!’

Billericaydicky · 13/11/2020 09:08

@4Minions2CallMyOwn neff or bosch are good makes, my ds bought a cheaper make and it wasn't as good. He said he'd wished he'd paid a bit more.

4Minions2CallMyOwn · 13/11/2020 10:33

@Billericaydicky That’s really helpful, thanks so much. So will stay clear of cheaper models as we definitely want it to last! Smile

IRunLikeJoeBiden · 13/11/2020 10:33

We have a Bosch that is good, I always Bosch is a good mid price brand.

4Minions2CallMyOwn · 13/11/2020 10:34

@IRunLikeJoeBiden Brilliant, I’m going to have a look at Bosch now
