Dishwasher yes or no ?

Looking at redoing the kitchen but I'm not sure if we should add a dishwasher. We have never had one before so never missed one. I'm not sure if it's worth adding ? The people who I know have them don't seem to use them much . Seemed like abit if a faf to me but thought it's worth getting some ideas .

There is a filter but it's quite easy to clean, much easier than a washing machine filter.

Whoooootaminute · 12/11/2020 10:03

I wouldn't be without now. Even insist on one when booking holiday homes.

I hate cluttered kitchens. I try and keep the worktops as empty as possible and would hate to see dishes and pots waiting to be washed /draining.

Hopeandglory · 12/11/2020 10:09

love them so much we have 2 which tend to be on daily, as we live in a hard water area we top up salt and rinse aid monthly and clean it through with a dishwasher cleaner.

Sunisshining12 · 12/11/2020 11:02

It's like asking should I have an oven or a washing machine lol. YES it will change your life forever

Chasingsquirrels · 12/11/2020 11:06

For me - YES definately.

Our first one was when we were ex-pats, didn't use it much as ate out a lot etc.

Got one in our house a few years later as part of some general kitchen/ building work. That's probably 18 years ago now.
I'm recently onto my 3rd in the same house, first 2 probably lasted 8 or 9 years each. Replacing them was a no-brainer for me.

ClaireP20 · 12/11/2020 11:09

I never thought I would need one either, but this house came with one. It is absolutely brilliant. My DH washes everything beforehand. I do not, just scrape it and straight in the dishwasher...lovely. x

womaninatightspot · 12/11/2020 11:13

When mine broke I had a new one installed within a week. It's on the essentials list. tbh. I also think it encourages more baking etc. as when you're done you can whack it all in the dishwasher.

NastyBlouse · 12/11/2020 11:13

I can't imagine not having one, for me it'd be like saying 'do we really need a washing machine?' Mine is on three times a day at the moment (mainly because it's tiny, one of those pull-out dish-drawer ones).

Things that generally can't go in a dishwasher (off the top of my head): wooden utensils, copper pans, crystal glassware, old/antique china crockery or anything hand-decorated.

WomenAndVulvas · 12/11/2020 11:15

Yes, definitely!
Modern dishwashers means you use less energy and water than washing up by hand.

HerNameIsIncontinentiaButtocks · 12/11/2020 11:18

Yes as well. Evict the washing machine to another location if you don't have room, the dishwasher takes priority.

WeAreFromThePlanetDuplo · 12/11/2020 11:20

Good god, I wouldn’t be without one. We recently replaced ours and the cutlery tray brings me daily joy.

Ricepops · 12/11/2020 11:22

YES, absolutely no doubt, you won't regret it

WonderMoon · 12/11/2020 11:22

I used to scoff at the idea of a dishwasher - I thought it was a waste of money and abit lazy. Oh how I would love one now! We are only a family of 3 but blimey, we go through so many pots!! We don't have room in the kitchen for one at the moment, need to jiggle things around but as soon as we do, we'll be buying one!

Fightthebear · 12/11/2020 11:23

Only maintenance is clearing the filter of food gunk occasionally but that’s straightforward.

I don’t clean ours but will do a hot cycle occasionally.

helloxhristmas · 12/11/2020 11:27

Oh god yes. I wouldn't not have one. Bit like saying do you prefer a washing machine or a mangle!

I chuck in one of the dishwasher cleaner things every few months and top up salt and rinse aid. No maintenance at all.

Bezzi · 12/11/2020 11:28

I'm going against the grain here.
Always had one in my old house, moved to my new house this year and haven't got one and would never go back!
Hand washing dishes is so much easier than the faff of a dishwasher.
I hated loading and unloading it. Checking if things were clean and then having to hand wash the stuff that wasn't. It will not clean egg!!
Going to get a plate out of the cupboard and finding there wasn't one and then finding that the dishwasher was loaded but not on so the dirty dishes were festering!
Now we cook, eat, do the dishes and everything is sorted!
(I know this is an unpopular opinion)

I will however put one in before we move, as everyone who came to view our old house asked if there was a dishwasher so it's clearly pinnacle to selling your house 😁

lockdownguru · 12/11/2020 11:36

Absolutely yes, and a large one. I have two big fears at my home: boiler issues and dishwasher breaking down.

pilates · 12/11/2020 11:38

Definitely yes

SingingSands · 12/11/2020 11:40

Yes. In fact, get two.

pinkbalconyrailing · 12/11/2020 11:44

the only things that don't go in are chilli type water bottles, insulated mugs and non stick coated pans (but we are replacing those slowly with dw suitable ones)
5 people here and it's running almost every day.

MrsMoastyToasty · 12/11/2020 11:44

Totally absolutely yes. Even better if you have a child to load and unload it.

pinkbalconyrailing · 12/11/2020 11:46

Checking if things were clean and then having to hand wash the stuff that wasn't. It will not clean egg!!

you must have had a duff one.

SummerOfComedy · 12/11/2020 11:48

Yes wouldn't be without mine now.
There are things I don't put in though. Sharp knives, non stick baking trays and nonstick pans. I read that the chemicals in the dishwasher tab is too harsh for these things.
Everything else goes in and as pp have said your kitchen looks neat (almost) all of the time!
P.S. I also put in the dish scrubber from time to time. Keeps it smelling fresh.

VinylDetective · 12/11/2020 11:50

This.

There are only two of us and I wouldn’t be without a dishwasher ever. It’s worth it just for having a kitchen that’s always tidy.

MustStopSnacking28 · 12/11/2020 11:51

Yes yes yes. Our old house had a tiny kitchen (like 3m x 2m) and we still tried to squeeze one in but couldn’t. I have a small one in the current house and would never again be without one!!! Especially as at the time in the old house we had a newborn so trying to wash dishes in a tiny kitchen was a bloody pain in the arse!
