Dishwasher yes or no ?

Looking at redoing the kitchen but I'm not sure if we should add a dishwasher. We have never had one before so never missed one. I'm not sure if it's worth adding ? The people who I know have them don't seem to use them much . Seemed like abit if a faf to me but thought it's worth getting some ideas .

We are moving house soon to a house with no dishwasher. Not saying I'm freaking out but I'M FREAKING OUT.

I love my dishwasher, maybe more than I love my actual human family members.

I can't cope.

WhoUsedMyName · 12/11/2020 09:13

I got one in our last house and used it as a storage cupboard for carrier bags 😂don't have one in the new house to much of a faff by the time I've rinsed it stacked it and emptied it I could wash up and put away. But I wash up as I go never let it build up

Oblomov20 · 12/11/2020 09:14

God yes. Was best thing We ever bought. When we did our kitchen I told Dh it was the only thing I insisted on. All my friends used to tease me about not having one.
Now I've got one I'm resentful I didn't get one before.

Coffeeandaride · 12/11/2020 09:18

I have one but took me a couple of years to start using it. Now we use it about twice a week. There are 6 of us but I don’t like leaving it half full, I’d prefer to wash everything after it is used.
I tend to use it after we have got a bit behind with washing up (ie when I’ve been at work and come home to washing up, I put it in dishwasher knowing the after dinner stuff will fill it up.
I could live without it.

Topseyt · 12/11/2020 09:21

A million times yes. Who are these fruit loops who have a dishwasher and don't use it?

I hate to be without my dishwasher. The last time one broke down I ordered a replacement immediately and the couple of days I had to wait for delivery seemed never ending.

pumpkinpie01 · 12/11/2020 09:22

When we had a new kitchen I thought we didn't need one as we had never had one before , I was only tempted as it was a deal along with the fridge and cooker. I honestly cannot imagine not having one , the kitchen is so much tidier ours goes on after tea every night. They are extra helpful when you do a roast or have a party .

uisage · 12/11/2020 09:22

Another yes here! I can empty it in 3 minutes then all of the dirty dishes can be put in it through the day so they're not cluttering your worktop. The toddler is also excellent at helping empty it, he knows where all of the chopping boards and pans go.

A dishwasher would definitely factor into my decision of whether to buy a house or not, especially if I was a family one.

BashfulClam · 12/11/2020 09:22

I think I’d try to save mind if there was a fire. I love it, just bung used dishes in and once it’s full, on it goes. Clean and sanitised dishes to put away. People say ‘oh I’d hate the faff of loading and unloading!’ Erm on but you have to fill a sink about 3 times, that a faff when you can just put your dishes in once they are dirty, you still have to put your dishes away if you wash them by hand too.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 12/11/2020 09:24

Definitely. I love our dishwasher so much. Would be lost without it!

Londongent · 12/11/2020 09:25

I wish all my cupboards were dishwashers....absolutely get one

slalomsuki · 12/11/2020 09:25

I have one but tend to wash dishes by hand if there are only a few of them. For example at breakfast when there are only bowls, glasses and mugs and it's easy to wash them up. They wouldn't justify a dishwasher load and would just stay dirty in there until there was sufficient to put it on.

Evenings are different and also at the weekend when the dishwasher come in to its own.

However don't start me on load and unloading of the dishwasher!

happymummy12345 · 12/11/2020 09:26

Yes. I wish we had room for one

BoulangerieBabs · 12/11/2020 09:28

God yes, we even have insurance on ours in case of breakdown.

They hugely reduce your water bill too.

When we moved in to this house there was no dishwasher so we ripped a cupboard out before we'd even unpacked any boxes and had it put in.

toiletpaper · 12/11/2020 09:28

I had a dishwasher in my old house but the house I'm now renting after leaving ex doesn't have room for one. I absolutely hate washing up and the dishes would pile up and would really affect my mood. Someone on here recommended I get a mini one which I did and keep on top of my tumble dryer (manual fill and it drains into a bucket) and it's an absolute life changer. My mood is so much better since having it and I'm cooking a lot more as I only wash baking trays, big bowls etc by hand as they don't fit in the dishwasher. I'd never ever be without one again!

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 12/11/2020 09:28

The only things that doesn't go in the dishwasher here are Circulon pans. But considering I can put all other plates, bowls, cups, glasses, cutlery and stainless steel pans from making dinner I would not be without it.

In fact ours died after 6 years and the novelty of washing up by hand soon wore off. Replaced it as soon as we could. Emptying it takes about the length of a song. If you have children now is an excellent time to get them to help unpack it. I do it once a week, the children do the other 6 days but they are teenagers!

MoirasRoses · 12/11/2020 09:28

God yes. I wouldn’t buy a house where there wasn’t one/I couldn’t put one!

We are all fully house trained 🙄 My house is as clean & tidy as you’ll find a house with a 3 year old & 8 month old. But we have two young kids, we both work in busy jobs. Life is busy. & we are now both WFH cos Covid so we use a lot more plates/glasses etc than we were doing. Ours goes on once a day, we throw everything in it.

I also have a robot hoover. Anything to save time & give more time to do stuff with the kids/have a rest 😊

merlotormalbec · 12/11/2020 09:30

We've just brought our first place and never had a dishwasher in our rented places and I couldn't go back now. Ever

merlotormalbec · 12/11/2020 09:31

Ours is a half and half so you can still load it while it's going which I love!

FatimaMunchy · 12/11/2020 09:33

Definitely put one in. People do want a dishwasher (or space for a dishwasher and plumbing). If you sell it would be expected.
Choose carefully though. We had a rubbish one (Whirlpool) in our old house. Current one is a Beko and we use it all the time.

dottiedodah · 12/11/2020 09:34

I would say yes a thousand times over! Ours had broken and we have been without one for a while, humming and haaing over whether to replace .Will defo be ordering a new one!

GameSetMatch · 12/11/2020 09:34

I love my dishwasher, it’s my favourite house appliance! When you buy one you will wonder why you haven’t had one before! They are amazing! No dry hands from hand washing dishes, no drying up to do it will be a revelation.

ThatDamnScientist · 12/11/2020 09:35

Yes! I don't have one at the minute (unless you count DH as that is his job! Grin). I miss mine so much (no room in this house).

Smallgoon · 12/11/2020 09:37

@midgebabe

I had one once, and didn't bother putting one into my new kitchen. Only 3 of us, and all house trained though so that might make a difference
They're more cost effective in terms of water usage. I've only had a dishwasher for 3 months, having never had one previously. I wouldn't be without it and I'm definitely 'house-trained'
Pickpick101 · 12/11/2020 09:38

Okay seems clear cut , is there any maintenance like filters to change ? Bit of a daft question but we have never had one and didn't have one growing up.

100 percent yes, I was without one for a while, now I can make dinner, shove it all in the dishwasher after and turn on over night and there are only 2 of us, it has changed my life and worth every single penny, you can put so much stuff in them and it cleans so much better x
