Im thinking once we completeNov/Dec leaving the buyers housewarming gift-maybe small plant or some tea n biccies. Is that something folk do? Maybe I’m being over the top.

I didn't leave a gift as such. The buyers were moving in to the area so I compiled a list of recommendations - best nursery, best cobbler, best places for days out, a sketch of the garden with names and positions of plants & trees etc etc. This was long before the Internet. I later learnt that the family found the list very useful.

We left a bottle of wine and a card. Seemed a nice thing to do Smile

We weren't left anything either time we bought though so I'm not sure how common it is.

Holliej · 29/10/2020 05:29

Buyers left us a bottle of wine, card and a random statue that was found in the house and passed down over the last three buyers.. (over 25 years). It’s under the stairs and I can’t bear to throw onto it lol.

I sold my house to my parents to rent out so didn’t leave anything as no tenant at the time.. otherwise I would of left a little something xx

Wow! That’s very organised Good tip on recommendations too. I’m not much of an artiste so could sketch all garden plants. Maybe I’ll leave plant markers

Originally we were going to but they turned out to be a total nightmare so didn't.

Persipan · 29/10/2020 06:24

I left homemade cupcakes once! Goodness knows how I had time...

HappyDinosaur · 29/10/2020 06:28

I left a box of chocolates last time.

LynetteScavo · 29/10/2020 06:36

No, I just leave the house spotlessly clean (and leave the toilet roll and bulbs). I've never liked anyone I've sold a house to.

HoneyWheeler · 29/10/2020 06:48

We left a bottle of wine and a card too, and got a bottle of bubbles at our new place. We also emailed some local recommendations as we knew they were new to the area.

Mindymomo · 29/10/2020 07:17

Thanks for this. We are selling FILs property hopefully new buyers in next week. We haven’t met them, but will get some wine and chocolates/ biscuits. We are leaving them white goods, so will leave a folder with instructions and may leave a note on Council, doctors, bin collection day etc.,

Heronwatcher · 29/10/2020 07:22

I left a bottle and a note. My seller left rooms of rubbish for us to sort out!

CorporeSarnie · 29/10/2020 07:25

Buyers of our old house who lied to us about planning to live there and were actually BTL? No. Left them all the paperwork in a folder but no point in pretending it was anything other than a business transaction to them. Buyers of relative's house who are planning a total refurb and will make it a family home once more? Yes, we'll send them a gift on completion (due today ). It isn't common place to leave a gift (we got left a letter about our current house which largely told us not to destroy its character from the deceased former owners son, and loads of crap in the attic).

FiveShelties · 29/10/2020 07:27

Wine and a card, together with a list of (hopefully) useful telephone numbers.

RWK29 · 29/10/2020 07:29

@Sweett00th I think it’s nice to leave a little something! Doesn’t have to be much 😊 This was the first home we’ve ever bough and we had a lovely card, candle and biscuits left for us.
We also bought somewhere that had lots of integrated appliances so previous owners had put together a wee folder of all instruction booklets etc and had left any info that we might find useful, eg, what the bin collection days are, number for the window cleaner, Gardner and chimney sweep that they had used etc.

Also, maybe not for everyone but the old owners of ours had freshly decorated to a nice neutral colour scheme in order to sell - we had commented on how lovely it was at the viewing as it’s exactly the kind of decor we would have done ourselves! So they contacted us before the move to ask if we’d like all their half tins of paint etc left incase we wanted to leave the decor for a while and needed any touch ups after the move 🤷🏻‍♀️ Went in to a nice organised paint cupboard all labelled with what walls were painted in what colour, plus boxes of spare tiles for each bathroom 👍🏻 Was really handy for us and they would have just been throwing it out anyway.

TenThousandSpoons · 29/10/2020 07:29

Our sellers left us a bottle of wine and a housewarming card with some useful info like what day the bins go out. Also a folder with all the manuals/info for each appliance. Very much appreciated.

Choccorocco · 29/10/2020 07:32

I left my first flat as clean as I could get it, with a bottle of champagne, 2 glasses and a card.
When we bought our house, the previous owners left a big file with all of the instruction manuals plus lists of local services etc, which has been very useful!

mrsfeatherbottom · 29/10/2020 07:35

We left a bottle of wine (and two cheap wine glasses so they could have a drink without unpacking!), all the instructions for any appliances we left, and a list of the names of the immediate neighbours, bin day info and other useful info.

The house we moved to, they left us 10 years worth of dust!

RunningThrough · 29/10/2020 07:47

I was planning on flowers, writing a nice letter and wine but just before exchange she demanded price drop of 1k, (survey done months ago was fine) so I'll just leave a card and house manuals etc.

and fish behind the radiator

UsernameN0Tavailable · 29/10/2020 07:50

We left a card and a bottle of prosecco. Wished we hadn't when she turned out to be a complete nut job who contacted me several times a day for weeks (how do I turn the shower on? What paint colour is the 2nd bedroom?) and then tried to sue us 6 months later because she'd broken the brand new boiler and she had fallen out with the (perfectly lovely) neighbours.

PickAChew · 29/10/2020 07:53

We left a box of chocolates and little bottle of bubbly.

We were left a houseful of filth and the detritus of last night's fry up.

Lightsontbut · 29/10/2020 07:56

We were going to leave a bottle of wine along with lots of helpful info re: bins etc. but then they showed that they were swindling psychopaths so we didn't .

MirandaMarple · 29/10/2020 08:05

Bottle of Prosecco and a note. Loo roll in the loos and soap in the bathrooms.

BiddyPop · 29/10/2020 08:13

We left a bottle of wine, good luck card, and half a box of writing paper which had the address printed on it with a decent bundle of envelopes. And while not as clean as I wanted, certainly generally clean.

We arrived to less than nothing, massive holes in the wall in the bathroom we weren't expecting and an old fridge and cooker which we had specifically said we didn't want to pay extra for and said they should be removed. And a filthy house. Absolutely minging.

GiraffeNecked · 29/10/2020 08:16

We were left a bottle of wine and a card saying how much they loved the house. I now work with the guy.

Just moved again We left wine and a card, knew the buyers as well. So they’ve texted to ask a couple of things.

House we moved too they left a card saying how much they’d loved living there 25 years or so. a list of instructions for the pond and all the stuff that was a bit hard to figure like the heating and shower pump. And also a picture of the house when it was built.

I like stuff like that To feel a connection.

MsSquiz · 29/10/2020 08:17

We left a bottle of wine & a card, plus a note about bin days, local restaurants & takeaway menus. They were completely new to the area and we always get a takeaway on moving day so thought it was a nice little touch.
