When we moved in we found out that the Sellers pulled coat hooks off the walls, took the bathroom mirrors, every lampshade, the washing line and EVEN the washing line post and prop!!!

A ridiculously large amount of crap ( broken garden tools, broken garden incinerator, chest freezer, tins of paint, a damaged tyre, a calor gas heater etc etc) Our solicitor ( my mum ) thought we should persue him for removal costs but he was elderly, bereaved and we had offered low on the property ( couldn’t afford any more) so we didn’t.
Only snag was we were so short of money we couldn’t afford to get rid of it ourselves either. Not all bad though, he had wanted us to buy the hall and stair carpet but ( see above) we could not afford it, but he left it anyway.

ComeAlive · 25/10/2020 20:04

our vendors took most of the plants in the garden. Luckily we’d knocked a huge chunk off the sale price so could afford to restock a few times over!

TartanLassie · 25/10/2020 20:07

What a strange thread. Why would you leave your curtains, lampshades and mirrors?

And if you don't want to pay for the carpets, why would the seller leave them just because you had a baby! Such a sense of entitlement!!

whereisthejoy · 25/10/2020 20:11

Move day is tomorrow so I'll report back Grin

We bought two beautiful chandeliers which my DH refuses to let me take. I am livid! As of course we will replace with light fittings (as legally required anyway).

Trinpy · 25/10/2020 20:13

Taking bathroom mirrors that are fixed to the wall rather than just hung seems a bit strange, and I would expect coat hooks to be left unless they are especially nice/expensive ones, but everything else you mention in the OP seems normal stuff to take to me? I definitely wouldn't want someone else's curtains or lampshades as I like to choose my own furnishings for my house. We always hang some sheets or or something across the windows at the front of the house on the first night then get the curtains up the following day.

whereisthejoy · 25/10/2020 20:15

I meant WOULD replace. We aren't taking them 😩

Trinpy · 25/10/2020 20:19

When we moved into our current house the previous owners took the wheelie bins (and yes they are surprisingly expensive to replace!), but left us a few cheap canvas prints, a large vase and a pregnancy test- all left for us in the middle of the living room carpet!

House before that they left us some frozen oxtail and a game of Guess Who. We were skint at the time so really appreciated the free dinner and evening entertainment Grin.

Iwantacookie · 25/10/2020 20:20

I found a fully made up xmas tree and a stereo in the loft when I moved in here.
Managed to bring 3 rolls of carpet from my old place that ide never seem before in my life must of been shoved up the loft by previous person and our movers thought it was ours.

ILovemyCatsSoSoMuch · 25/10/2020 20:25

We complete on Friday, you’re all scaring me now....

NiceTwin · 25/10/2020 20:26

We got left a cat, we still have him 5 years on, he is no trouble.

pigcon1 · 25/10/2020 20:29

Curtains - we had agreed they would be left. Separating couple, one party decided to take them. We spent a year with sheets up...

gumball37 · 25/10/2020 20:33

Damn. Right now I'm (USA) dealing with an undisclosed flooding basement. But this is the 4th house I've purchased in my life. Never had anything left that shouldn't be nor taken that shouldn't have been. We do a final walkthrough the day we close... If anything is left or taken it is handled at closing... Keys are exchanged at that point and the sellers are no longer permitted on the premises to leave not take anything else.

He's not your boss and these are things you are expected to take. Imagine if they chucked them in the tip...
chorusline79 · 25/10/2020 20:41

Is it normal to take your carpets with you when you move then? I would have assumed they come with the house and have never even considered taking them when moving,

TheLetterZ · 25/10/2020 20:45

Surely with mirrors it depends on if it is one in a frame like a picture (take) or a flat mirror that is screwed onto the bathroom wall (leave).

Lampshades if you are taking it should be very clear in the fixtures list.

We are leaving the curtains, always have, they fit this house both in size and style. And definitely leave the carpets!

rorosemary · 25/10/2020 20:46

Took the doorbell. Massive faff when you have people coming in the same day to do work (and didn't bring paper and tape for a sign).

MoirasRoses · 25/10/2020 20:56

We are leaving the blinds in our house as they were left for us. I was really grateful when we moved in as it meant you could sleep normally in a morning! We replaced them in due course with new ones & curtains but really handy in the first couple weeks! Also leaving fridge/washing machine/dishwasher as built in. Will be leaving bathroom mirrors & plants in the garden 😂

People taking carpet is bizarre. Surely it specifically fits the room it’s in?!

Notemyname · 25/10/2020 20:57

We must be tight, just filled in our fixtures and fittings form for our sale and it specifies all the items on here people are mentioning like curtain poles, coat hooks, washing line and prop, shelves, mirrors. We're taking them all with us. We are pushing our budget to the max to move so finances are tight, and it's amazing how much the cost of these items add up if we had to buy them all again new.

My mum did tell me carpets were not included when they bought back in the 70's and 80's but we're leaving ours here Smile

chorusline79 · 25/10/2020 20:59

Yes, taking carpet seems ridiculous as will fit the room! I think I'd be rather taken aback to move in and see carpets had gone but did wonder if I was being unreasonable to expect carpet for a minute there! I felt sorry for previous poster whose seller tried to charge extra for it!

Scarby9 · 25/10/2020 21:00

They left the bedroom lightshade which looks like an enormous single breast.
25 years later, I still have it hanging above the bed!

MeMeMeYou · 25/10/2020 21:03

They left a video of them shagging. The video was on top of the kitchen cupboards. They were shagging on the sofa they’d left behind for us. Which we promptly replaced!

pollywollydoodler · 25/10/2020 21:04

I arrived in the evening.
They had taken all the light bulbs
They left turds in both toilets..

SarahSinuses · 25/10/2020 21:04

Ours left their old washing machine which was lovely as money was tight! They left all the curtains and lamp shades except for 1 room (thought it was standard to take curtains since they are v pricey!) and a bottle of prosseco.

Was a very lovely surprise. I hope to do the same when we eventually sell (but would probably check with buyers since not everyone would want an old washing machine 🤣)

lunar1 · 25/10/2020 21:08

They took every plant in the garden, the outside security lights, the burglar alarm sensors (not the panel), turned off the electricity and chopped/ripped down the lights, several radiators without sealing the pipes properly, the shower, and probably loads of things I've forgotten!

Solicitors got involved and the police as they let themselves into the house a week after we moved in. They ended up having to pay around £5000 in damages they caused, including a locksmith to charge the locks for the whole house as I didn't feel safe.

MoominWoomin · 25/10/2020 21:09

Ours left us a lovely card, a bottle of champagne and a very expensive Jo Malone candle! Thanks
