Woodseats in Sheffield - transport links not great?

CatAndHisKit · 14/08/2020 19:12

Considering buying in that area (so far just looking on rightmove) as it's cheaper than the more trendy areas yet same sort of direction (I like Abbeydale.Ecclesall).
Houses near Fraser Rd on rightmove have 'great public transport' in decsription - but having looked on google, how ar they great? One bus route on Fraser Rd and according to schedule it's just one in 30min. For Sheffiled i'd say it's hardy great. Or am I missing something? Is it easy to walk to Abbeydale rd for may more buses (involves a bridge)?
I do need public transport.

TIA

P.S. Moderate hills are ok by me, I had lived in Bristol Grin and walk up one where I live now, but I wouldn't want a very steep one, and I don't like to be on a street where buses run. It's all ok when feeling energetic but if you coming back after a long day / or in bad weather, then no!

sorry for missing letters and typos, Fleur!

Also how do you check if a sreet is studenty? I know you can look up the proportion of rentals but it only differentiates between private and council.

To catch the 52 towards Crookes you have to walk up to the town centre from the station and catch it opposite the Cathedral. It's a pain. The 95 is closer to the station but never fits my commute (I get the train into Sheffield and then the bus onwards). I usually get the 51 from Arundel Gate (stop AG11) as it's a slightly shorter walk from the station but I'm only going as far as the Children's Hospital so I don't know its route beyond that. I've put on so much weight since WFH as I'm no longer scurrying from train to bus and vice versa!

FleurForesight · 23/08/2020 18:09

I'm afraid I couldn't enlighten you about the 52s origins, @CatAndHisKit as it's a while since I lived in Sheffield and it has all changed now. I used to see it while waiting for the 50 on my way home from school a long time ago

I wouldn't buy in Gleadless or Handsworth, though you'd get more for your money.

The problem with somewhere like Fraser Road is that you'd have to walk quite a long way to find anything interesting or any shops other than the usual supermarket/KFC/McD/Pets At Home combos.

I've just had a look at Rightmove. There are some decent flats in S11 (including Brincliffe, which is now pretty gentrified) - but I seem to remember Brincliffe being poor for buses (may have changed?) I think some of Brincliffe is S11 and some is S7; the S11 bit is nicer.

Only one house in S17 for that price, and it's a small renovation project in a slightly odd road that's not great for public transport (though is right on the edge of the Peak District).

The houses in S10 which fit the budget are all in Crookes. Given the combination of factors on your wish-list, I'd go for one of those. My cousin lived in Crookes for several years (she bought her first house there), and loved it. She said it was really easy to get around, and it was a short walk from her house to the bus, shops, greenery etc. It's also a pretty salubrious area - though probably best to avoid living next door to a student house...

I can't say anything about S6 as I have never lived there, and have never known anyone who does!

FleurForesight · 23/08/2020 18:10

Re students. Best to ask the agent. Failing that, ask the vendor. Failing that, do a bit of scouting around any street of interest. Engage a neighbour in conversation!

BTW, if you have a travel pass and/or luggage, you could get the tram from the station to Cathedral and then the bus from there. I never do as I buy single tickets (work part time so pass isn't worth it) and my train miscoordinates with the tram so I prefer to walk for 10mins for free rather than wait for 10mins and pay an extra £1.70.

CatAndHisKit · 23/08/2020 18:28

thank you, Fleur I don't know the postcodes well so not sure what do you mean by S6. There are a few houses in budget in Walkley / Hillsborough, Upperthorpe (assuming some can be negotiated on) - is that S6?
Yes, Bricliffe absolutely fine and I would compromise on bus perfection there (as the area itself is so good and walkable to nice places), I don't use the train daily. I haven't seen big enough flats there on rightmove (I need two good bedrooms and I'm generally more fussy re flats - only top floor, not open plan etc) - one that I have has just been snapped up as it's a great size (Nether Edge but I see it as roughly same area).
than you, Athena - that's what I thought, that 52 stops in the centre which is a pain as you say. Thanks for the tram tip! I think I should aim at somehwere on the 95 route really which is more Walkley - - or the lower part where you can walk a bit downhill to Crookes.

The lower end of Walkley is v handy for the tram; isn't at all studenty, and has easy access to all the shops/cafes/bars/craft ale pubs etc on South Road, as well as being on the edge of the Rivelin Valley. No buses to worry about then, as the tram is far quicker anyway.
The area is mainly populated by young families. Demographic v much teachers/ uni lecturers/ public sector/NHS... ie people who would've once lived in Nether Edge or Ecclesall but now can't afford it Grin ...but don't want the studenty-ness of Crookes or the shit schools and higher crime issues of Heeley and Meersbrook. Very outdoorsy due to the closeness of Rivelin and the Peak, so you get a LOT of runners, climbers and cyclists.

This sort of thing is what you'd be looking at, property wise..:

thanks, fell - sounds good! Are the trams frequent or is it one a half an hour thing? mind you still not bad if a quick ride. I saw a terrace on rightmove on a side street from the tram road - I wonder if those would be very noisy? It's gone now.

OP posts:
fellrunner85 · 23/08/2020 19:52

Very frequent - every few mins on that route at rush hour, as you pick up both the yellow and blue lines. So there's a tram every 5 mins or so, and it takes 15 mins into town. Less frequent outside of rush hour, obviously, but still a million times better than the 52, which is genuinely slower than walking pace from Broomhill onwards.

fellrunner85 · 23/08/2020 19:53

and they're not very noisy, no - much quieter than traffic on the main roads, plus they stop overnight so won't be waking you up if you live close by.

CatAndHisKit · 23/08/2020 20:18

that's great, fell - two lines as well! I'll now be looking out for that location. If you are in mid-Walkley - is it a steep hill to the tram?

Otherwise, if you are close to tram, is it walkable to the Crookes High st (which sounds better than Walkley's). Adn is South st the main one in Walkley or any other shopping area?

mini forgot to mention, my viewing on Friday was cancelled so I haven;t bee yet but hoping for the coming week.

OP posts:
CatAndHisKit · 23/08/2020 20:19

Alsso what's the nearest bigger supermarket to Crookes/Walkley?

OP posts:
fellrunner85 · 23/08/2020 21:06

Morrisons at Hillsborough or Sainsburys at Wadsley Bridge.

Plus there's a decent size Aldi at Langsett Road.

fellrunner85 · 23/08/2020 21:12

if you're in Walkley its a 5-10 min walk downhill to the tram stop (and obvs uphill on the way back).
Crookes high st not necessarily better than South Rd in Walkley these days. It used to be, but Walkley now has a huge farm shop, several independent clothes/craft/arty/ale shops and some fabulous bakeries. Crookes has more charity shops and takeaways, but decent bars.
Crookes has a mini Sainsburys and Walkley a mini Asda. It's walkable to Crookes high st from Walkley, but you'd have no reason to make the trip, tbh.

CatAndHisKit · 23/08/2020 21:22

thanks again, fell you are a mine of useful info!
Bit confusing re hills as I thought it's uphill to trams, just because it's more North Grin. I must zoom on google re South Rd as when I had a look it only showed a couple of shops/a pub while Crookes looked busier, but either they are new or I need to zoom more.

OP posts:
CatAndHisKit · 23/08/2020 21:23

is Hillsborough much worse, you think, as the other poster was quite scathing?

OP posts:
fellrunner85 · 23/08/2020 21:31

Hillsborough is a bit more... "real", yes. Walkley is craft ale, hipster coffee, artisanal flower shops, and sourdough bread that costs £4 a loaf.
Hillsborough is B&M Bargains, betting shops and a massive Wetherspoons. But there's a fab park, some good new cafes, and it's showing signs of starting to get a bit more "upmarket." You'd undoubtedly get more for your money in Hillsborough....but I'd go for Walkley. Because I like fancy coffees and the easy access to Rivelin Valley Smile

Aragog · 23/08/2020 21:33

I usually get the 51 from Arundel Gate (stop AG11) as it's a slightly shorter walk from the station but I'm only going as far as the Children's Hospital so I don't know its route beyond that.

51 goes to Broomhill, then into crosspool and Lodge Moor, via Manchester Road. It doesn't turn to go into Crookes.

CatAndHisKit · 23/08/2020 21:33

is there a good coffee place in Walkley btw? Had another look - mostly (nice) pubs!

OP posts:
fellrunner85 · 23/08/2020 21:35

Joespresso for coffee!

Though Aesthete is good too; I'm a fan of Joe.

Aragog · 23/08/2020 21:36

Yes Walkley has cafes and bars these days. There's a nice one called Asthete: www.aesthetewalkley.com/
