Neighbours

Anyone else moved into a house that’s been empty for a long time and the neighbours start complaining once you live there??

No but they would be unreasonable to do so. Obviously it would be an adjustment but they should just be glad they had a period of no neighbours to worry about.

No, not personally. What are they complaining about?

We have 3 dogs. A few weeks back we left the house for an hour and they were barking through the window at him. Bear in mind they were sat outside our house (on our land) drinking.
It’s gone from there really. Now we’ve been accused of leaving dog mess in the area (which we don’t) and have a very frosty atmosphere from the other neighbours who live on the complex.
All we have tried to do since we came is tidy up the property and make it nice.

Why were they sat on your land?

Fence your land and fence your dogs in. Lots of people will not like barking dogs. I definitely wouldn't but I would fence my own land or grow hedges. Define what you own and do not let your dogs bark.

Fence off your property.. Keep them out. Can you put shutters on windows anywhere ddogs can be aggravated by passers by?

We live in a complex of 5 houses with communal gardens to the front. One of the occupants also had a dog which prior to us arriving used to let out and roam the communal area to use as a toilet (she has a field 20 metres away of her own)
But insisted on just opening the door and letting it out. It started to wander around and came into our private patio where we have a large glass window. My dogs went mental and barked at it through the glass. That happens on at least two occasions and now they (mostly) put it in the leash and take it over to the field.
It seems like we’ve upset the every day life!

Its peripheral but if it can be avoided, its best not to buy anything that involves the words communal or shared. Of course there are exceptions. Good fences make good neighbours etc..

I do not let my dogs out in to the communal area and never have since I moved in. Our private garden is at the rear which is fenced and secure. They were barking through a floor to ceiling window. It was our fault totally that they were barking as we didn’t secure the door correctly to the kitchen but I suspect that was the icing on the cake for them to moan.
Let’s face it they can’t complain about a hoover or a washing machine being on really?

I would not like dogs barking for one hour. You must secure the private patio area. Then no wandering dog comes in. I assume you can do this?

My ll once rang me raging our ddog was up on the bay window seat going nuts at him. I asked where he was - climbed over our front wall and his face was at the window at ddog.
What the fook did he expect??
Also when we moved to a farmhouse a very over familiar ndn complained to ll we had padlocked our own gateway- and now she could no longer come and go as she chose like previous tenant had allowed..

I cannot fence it off due to restrictive covenants on the property. The dogs were in the house but the neighbour CHOSE to sit outside on our land drinking wine.
I suggested that they used their own area but the reply was ‘we’ve always done this’

Generally I keep them quiet. One is a very nervous rescue dog which has a behaviourist. He would of gone crazy with someone outside staring at him so I understand and I agree. What did the ndn expect?
There are 2 families up here with dogs. Inc the roaming dog. They all bark. Particularly the one who roams around and she doesn’t quieten him down. In fact that evening that my ndn complained she returned home drunk with 6 others and was outside singing until 3am!
That’s far more anti social than a dog barking for an hour if you ask me? But, as she’s the type of person who no one will stand up to everyone just agrees with her.

Have you had a polite conversation to ask them to please not sit on your land and that's the reason your dogs were barking?

Not that you should op but maybe consider frosted glass if it's one big window only? More for your stress levels than ndn....
We had nets upstairs as ddog often tried to exit via small window it would appear to passers by. Had to stop her going upstairs eventually... If we hadn't had a view I would have put film on them. Quiter life for me!

Yes. I have thought about that. It’s a grade 2 listed building so there are so many restrictions with what we can do to protect the integrity of the building. I have considered shutter blinds inside which will look nice but will have to be made bespoke.

A great idea! It’s so awkward trying to fit in with people who are already established. I’ve a good mind to just ignore them to be honest. I think if you have good neighbours you’re extremely lucky. I had a lovely one in my old house, we used to spend days shopping etc.

OP I suggested that they used their own area but the reply was "we’ve always done this" Your reply should of been "not anymore you can't". Can you plant a hedge round the boundary and place a large window box with plants on the window ledge?

Thanks! I know, I always think of things after the event 🤦🏼‍♀️ No, we can’t section anything off sadly. I might just play really loud hip hop next time they want an afternoon soirée 😡

Hmm. A bit late now but this doesn’t sound like the best property for three dogs. Do they not have an enclosed garden? I can see why your neighbours might think this is an issue. I would.

How about some some big pots with shrubs in etc around your area?
