I can’t read any of the text so I’m not sure where anything is. It does look like a gloriously generous space.

mumdone · 27/06/2020 17:16

Ah sorry!! This might be better

I love it for the island alone

NotMeNoNo · 27/06/2020 18:32

Where are the doors in/ out? I mean where do ppl walk through?

mumdone · 27/06/2020 18:35

Good point! Not shown on the photo. Large sliders or bifolds, yet to be decided by the dining room table. Double glazed doors from the hallway to the kitchen area towards the snug. Boot room is show by an opening in the kitchen area

Where is your oven?

omtotheg · 27/06/2020 18:40

Personally I'm not a fan of hobs in the island I like that space to be clear with a nice vase alone on it. Though that's only my personal opinion.

I'd swap sink and hob about

mumdone · 27/06/2020 18:50

Yep single ovens eye height either side of sink. Not a fan of a sink on the island.

Our island will be 3m long. Our kitchen is 7mx4m

Did an actual kitchen designer prepare it? It's clearly a top end budget so I would get some alternative designs. It looks like someone with only one idea of "symmetry at all costs" produced it.

Generally kitchens are better if you group similar things together, with such a big room you could end up with a lot of walking.

FWIW I would consider putting a combined larder pantry on RHS, uncrowding the sink and putting the ovens together (microwave? Grill?) near worktop to put down items. This would add interest but still be balanced.

Another alternative would be sink under window, hob where sink is and island clear for baking/partying etc. Unless you are a cooking YouTuber.

An alternatve

Thank you. Yes this was our first thought but as you say the kitchen is large and walking between hob and sink could be a problem. Our architect designed a window seat, upon request. I love window seats.

Oh I thought bench was like a big wooden workable for baking on. I was just visualising a brightly coloured kitchen Aid and sourdough proving under a gingham cloth Grin.

In that case its a very bad design. Too many high cupboards, not enough workspace or drawers. I suggest independent kitchen designer. Is it for a large family and are you keen cooks/bakers? Wine rack and fridge seem to feature highly Grin

mumdone · 27/06/2020 19:38

Oh god no. That’s for sitting in the sun reading a trash mag whilst drinking wine. Large family not keen bakers. Island should be large enough for prep as either side of the sink? Yes wine fridge. We have a double pantry, fridge and freezer. 2x single ovens. Loads of drawers, some cupboards and a breakfast bar

I think if you have an architect and such a big area I'd agree with @NotMeNoNo and go see kitchen designers - from the places you'd buy the kitchen units from and see what they suggest. It's all a bit 'predictable', units around the edge, island in the middle. A walk-in pantry would be cool (literally). :)

BruceAndNosh · 27/06/2020 19:40

How much worktop do you have? There is a bit either side of sink, and the island. Anywhere else? (I can't read the labels on picture.)

NotMeNoNo · 27/06/2020 19:40

Things to consider -

  • kettle/tap and coffee area
  • any appliances like toaster. I know some people like to hide them but accessories make a kitchen interesting.
  • ergonomics of unloading dishwasher and putting crockery/cutlery away , ideally should not clash with cooking operations
Lighting & extraction Space to stack washing up On a 3m island you could consider prep sink one end and hob towards the other. Else you have that gigantic room and not one bit of continuous work space over a metre wide.
mumdone · 27/06/2020 19:43

This is a high end kitchen designer. They’ve though about unloading dishwasher, cutlery bins, walking from table and clearing away waste. We have a space for hiding away ‘normal’ counter bits like toaster and kettle. We like the design but I also like to be challenged on design, given the amount we are spending!

What is the distance between your island and wall runs? If it is more than 1.2m I would suggest making your island bigger to give more workspace and to reduce the need to walk. I would also swap the cupboards in the island for drawers which are more practical.

Personally I would prefer the sink by the window to give a view of the garden and forgo the bench seating as you already have island seating and seating at the dining table.

NotMeNoNo · 27/06/2020 19:47

I'm surprised but fair enough, good luck with it then.

mrsmummy111 · 27/06/2020 19:53

We have a very very similar kitchen / lounge space as yours, and I almost put the hob on the island as well until I asked friends almost everyone said sink on island. A lot easier to make it fuss free and minimalist with just a nice fancy hand wash and giant vase of flowers. Fuss free. It’s also not very pleasant to be sitting on the island opposite the hob with oil spatters going everywhere, or alternatively if you’re using the hob then eating at the island, i couldn’t bear to sit there looking at a filthy hob whilst eating my dinner!

weepingwillow22 · 27/06/2020 19:54

I would also add a prep sink to the island to minimise walking

IkeaKitchenSuccess · 27/06/2020 19:55

Your kitchen is similar size to mine. I have hob and sink on the main run - not a fan of them on islands. Don’t rely on island for food prep. In non Covid times when people gather round to drink there is many the space.

mumdone · 27/06/2020 19:57

Thank you everyone. Please could you share you set ups?

American fridge and larders are behind me in this photo, parallel with end of island.

Definitely think sink and dishwasher on island OP
