Our NDNs are building some sort of contraption so they can hang their washing outside even when it's raining, but have screwed the sides of the structure to our side of the fence. I have knocked on the door and they were very apologetic and said they'd reattach it to their side, but nothing yet.

If I ask again and they don't remove them am I in my right to just remove the parts myself and drop the parts round to their house?

I have big plans for the garden and this looks so ugly!

That looks like they accessed your garden to do that. It's not pretty!

meow1989 · 14/06/2020 13:43

How did they even manage that without trespassing into your garden?

I think I'd knock again and give them a deadline otherwise you'll be removing yourself.

Lordfrontpaw · 14/06/2020 13:44

Why screw it in on your side?

Carolbaskinstiger · 14/06/2020 13:44

Wtf is that! So ugly

Noflora · 14/06/2020 13:44

Whose fence is It?

Onekidnoclue · 14/06/2020 13:44

That looks dire! I’m terrible at confrontation so I’d wait a bit and if still nothing pop over and tell them your happy to do it and give them the bits if they’re pushed for time.

Cheerybigbottom · 14/06/2020 13:45

Oh definitely take it off, it looks angled over to your side so rainwater will ride down it too I think.

Floralnomad · 14/06/2020 13:46

Is it your fence if so they shouldn’t be attaching anything to it at all and that’s what I’d be telling them .

Notapheasantplucker · 14/06/2020 13:46

That looks awful why the hell would they screw it to your side?!

I'd ask again and if it's not been removed from your side within a couple of days take it down yourself. CFs.

TrickyKid · 14/06/2020 13:48

That looks awful too.

Jumblebumblemess · 14/06/2020 13:49

Who owns the fence? Not who is responsible for the boundary but who actually owns the fence? Who paid for it.

If it is yours then you can say they can't screw anything to it even on their side. If it theirs you can ask them to remove it from your side but they can screw it on their side with no legal issues.

TenShortStories · 14/06/2020 13:50

What a monstrosity! And their washing won't magically dry beautifully in the rain just because it's covered.

Don't just remove and pop the things round. It's too antagonistic, even though they've done wrong. You don't want a dispute on your hands. I'd let them know you need it changed by x date, and offer for them to arrange access from your side to remove if that helps speed up the process. Then start finding a nice big trellis and climber plants to hide that beast!

cabbageking · 14/06/2020 13:52

It's ugly. I would ask them again to remove it before attempting to remove it myself.

WinterAndRoughWeather · 14/06/2020 13:52

Can’t see how such a contraption will work anyway. If it’s raining the air’s damp.

HappyHammy · 14/06/2020 13:53

That looks awful. If its your fence they cannot attach anything to it either side without your permission. How did they attach it without going into your garden. The rainwater will just run off into your garden. If they want some sort of indoor space they need to have the roof finishing their side with water gutters running into a drain. Its a botched porch like thing. I would go back and tell them to take it down this afternoon. Can you even build that high.

Jellybeansincognito · 14/06/2020 13:53

Gosh that’s absolutely awful.

You can’t build structures like this anyway, so it needs to totally stop unless they get planning? (It’s too high!)

HotChoc10 · 14/06/2020 13:53

I know it looks terrible but I figure I can't actually be aggrieved just at their poor taste. I think they were sort of hanging off the top leaning over our side to screw it in? I didn't see them actually do it!

Fairly unanimous though, I'll ask one more time then take it down myself. The screws are all on our side and it should be easy enough to do. It's our fence, I just paid for new fencing less than 6 months ago, which was about a grand, so I really don't appreciate it being messed with!

Even if they were responsible for maintaining the fence I think they shouldn't be doing it on our side though.

@Jellybeansincognito oh interesting. I'll raise it with the council in that case, this is the first home I've owned so I have no idea what's allowed or not for the most part.

Plummy987 · 14/06/2020 13:55

I can't believe the cheek of that! Even if they own the fence, how could anyone possibly think that's acceptable?! Definitely give them a deadline.

Soontobe60 · 14/06/2020 13:56

I'd not wait for them to remove it, I'd do it myself and tell them not to attach anything to your fence again. Idnthen put a trellis on top of my fence to hide the monstrosity!

HappyHammy · 14/06/2020 13:57

Look up fence law website. No way can you build that high without permission

Windyatthebeach · 14/06/2020 13:57

Deadline of like today...
Unscrew it first thing tomorrow and drop it gently back to them..

zaffa · 14/06/2020 13:58

How high is the actual fence? Is it a six foot one?
Also, who owns it?

intheningnangnong · 14/06/2020 14:01

If that’s your fence they shouldn’t be screwing anything into it full stop, not without your permission. This could fill the fence down - at your expense.

Inthemuckheap · 14/06/2020 14:01

Wow they are CFs and that is incredibly ugly. Can't believe they'd do that do a new fence that you paid for!

I'd give them an ultimatum - remove by X or you will take it down.
