This isn't on is it? (photo)

Our NDNs are building some sort of contraption so they can hang their washing outside even when it's raining, but have screwed the sides of the structure to our side of the fence. I have knocked on the door and they were very apologetic and said they'd reattach it to their side, but nothing yet.

If I ask again and they don't remove them am I in my right to just remove the parts myself and drop the parts round to their house?

I have big plans for the garden and this looks so ugly!

OP I'd honestly just go out now and take it down. Leave a note for the builders telling them the fence is yours and they are not to attach anything to it. If you let them take it down they might damage your fence further. I'm fuming on your behalf!!
Do contact the council if they do put up an eyesore right next to your fence.

HotChoc10 · 14/06/2020 16:40

@unlikelytobe no builders aren't English. They speak a bit but not fluent.

It's not really a conservatory as it's not attached to their house, just the back of the garden.

I know you paid for the fence but is it actually your boundary. Usually the boundary on the right is yours (so this would belong to next door)? Not always the case but legally they may be able to reattach to their side, assuming it complies with any planning restrictions

Butterfly44 · 14/06/2020 16:42

As it's your fence you can buy trellis to make it higher so you obscure the sight of it. That's what I'd do

Viviennemary · 14/06/2020 16:44

What an eyesore of a contraption no matter whose side of the fence it is attached too. I thought there was a rule that fences normally should only be 6ft high. And that's an extension of the fence.

HappyHammy · 14/06/2020 16:48

What are the beams on the white looking wall attached to..if they are just sunk into the ground then they have used your fence to anchor down the other side like a wall.. Those plastic panels are not attached to anything sturdy.

AmelieTaylor · 14/06/2020 16:49

Monday morning

Photos (& details of height etc) to council to check out if it's legal.

Builders to tell them if it's not gone today (Monday) you'll be removing it yourself & will not take any responsibility for it breaking.

  • ask them if they got building permission for the monstrosity.

Good luck.

AmelieTaylor · 14/06/2020 16:50

& make it very clear it's YOUR fence & they do not have permission to attach anything to it & to pass that on to the family as well!!

FourDecades · 14/06/2020 16:55

@bamboothrough...how odd...l was always told it's the boundary on the left...

Tianalia · 14/06/2020 16:57

Crikey, I just got a new fence put up. If the neighbour did that I would be telling them to remove it right now. And not to touch it again. And to make good any damage.

FourDecades · 14/06/2020 16:58

@HotChoc10 what actually is the building they have attached it too if it's not the house?

Floralnomad · 14/06/2020 16:58

@Alsohuman I totally see where you are coming from on the waste side but it may just enforce that they can’t attach stuff without at least asking .

TiddlestheCat · 14/06/2020 17:05

This is not only ugly but a planning issue because they have not only increased the fence height, but by putting a roof on it, have created a structure. It's also a civil issue too. I guess that they've not considered what it looks like from your side. I would invite them round to view it.

Alsohuman · 14/06/2020 17:07

I think being asked repeatedly gets the message across quite adequately without replacing a perfectly good fence panel.

TiddlestheCat · 14/06/2020 17:15

Btw, I used to work in planning. Have a look at the GDPO (General permitted development order) online. The planning portal is a good place to start. You can also access your planning authorities Development Control policies online. Essentially they have constructed a cheap lean to extension right up to and over your boundary. You can also send photos to your council's enforcement team and they will be able to advise you.

Juiceey · 14/06/2020 17:31

Wow I'm surprised at this! So rude of them and it looks so ugly too.

Curlyshabtree · 14/06/2020 17:38

What a good idea to have somewhere to dry your clothes even in the rain, better for the environment.

HotChoc10 · 14/06/2020 17:38

@fourdecades It's attached to a summer house type thing.

@TiddlestheCat I'm pretty sure it looks awful from their side too but I assume they don't care!

CherryStoneTree · 14/06/2020 17:44

@80sMum another one adding that what you said about fence orientation is wrong, you can out the “nice” side of the fence whatever way you want if you own it.

OP, they can’t even attach it on their side as the fence is yours . Don’t wait, Unscrew it tonight. Before they return tomorrow.

HotChoc10 · 14/06/2020 17:48

@Jumblebumblemess @fourdecades and anyone else who asked about who is responsible for the maintenance or repair of that boundary, I've just checked the documents from the solicitor and it is definitely us.

OP posts:
FourDecades · 14/06/2020 18:08

Sorry was being tongue 👅 in cheek. It is another one of those "laws" that if you say it enough times it must be true... i.e the fence on the right etc

bamboothrough · 14/06/2020 19:10

I stand corrected, I always thought you were responsible for the right one, that’s how it is in my garden and last house too

Windyatthebeach · 15/06/2020 15:25

Have they /you removed it yet op??

PigletJohn · 15/06/2020 15:55

I does seem very close to where you plan to put your new barbecue and fish-smoker.

HappyHammy · 15/06/2020 15:59

Piglet. I like your style 😁
