Our NDNs are building some sort of contraption so they can hang their washing outside even when it's raining, but have screwed the sides of the structure to our side of the fence. I have knocked on the door and they were very apologetic and said they'd reattach it to their side, but nothing yet.

If I ask again and they don't remove them am I in my right to just remove the parts myself and drop the parts round to their house?

I have big plans for the garden and this looks so ugly!

Blinking cheek! Why did they attach it to your side?

When did you ask for it to be removed.?

Jellybeansincognito · 14/06/2020 14:05

Even with sheds and conservatory’s and stuff, there needs to be a gap between the structure and the fence.

deffo report it if they don’t get rid of it

GreyGardens88 · 14/06/2020 14:06

What an eyesore, I find it hard to believe people have no consideration whatsoever for their nieghbours.

I'm sure if you did something similar they would be the first to complain as well!

It looks like it's over 2 meters tall so would in any case need to come down. Complain to the council

SunshineCake · 14/06/2020 14:07

I wouldn't let them get used to having it but I would give them one more day to remove before reporting for the sake of happier living.

Longdistance · 14/06/2020 14:10

Just unscrew the fucking thing and throw it over. No conversation needed. Bloody awful monstrosity.

Floralnomad · 14/06/2020 14:11

I’d be telling them to replace the damaged panel and not to attach anything else .

Lavenderpurple · 14/06/2020 14:11

I’m have no idea, but doesn’t something like that need planning permission?

HappyHammy · 14/06/2020 14:13

If its your fence they cant just attach it to their side. How would that work. The rain will still drain into your garden. If they want some sort of lean to it needs to be built properly with supports and guttering entirely their side. In high winds the whole thing could just come down. Speak to the council.

diddl · 14/06/2020 14:15

Wow!

So if nothing else that would just drip all down your side of the fence when it rains!

TwentyViginti · 14/06/2020 14:16

Fucking hell. Looks like a lot of the rain will drip/pour over your side, as well as this monstrosity being ugly. See if they've contravened any regs by building this and attaching it to a fence, regardless of which side.

ttigerlilly · 14/06/2020 14:16

I would just take it down today. You've asked them to and they haven't, and it's not even their fence. Outrageous!

Zaphodsotherhead · 14/06/2020 14:17

It looks as though they've just put a side on a carport type structure?

The rain will blow in at the ends anyway.

They have built what would be known in my neck of the woods as a lean-to.

InspectorCludo · 14/06/2020 14:20

@Jellybeansincognito is right, one of our neighbours built a smoking shelter off their back wall using that material and someone reported them and they had to take it down.

It is pretty ugly.
If I’d just paid for new fences I’d be asking them to stop screwing anything into them - your side or theirs.

ILoveJoeBrown · 14/06/2020 14:26

Unscrew it and then hang it back on their side. You don't want the run off from that as it will damage the fence on your side. If it's your fence, they have no rights at all.

If it's their fence, they might ask you to contribute when the fence is damaged by water run off. They are also encroaching on your property, even if its only by millimetres.

VenusTiger · 14/06/2020 14:30

Our NDN has this - it's got gaps in so as to avoid planning app and when they argue (they bicker constantly!) you can hear it clearly in our lounge and we're detached!! every sound, cupboards, garage door, washing machine, arguing, can be heard clearly because of it - it's a bloody nuisance, they don't use their front door at all anymore, they use this side entrance (has a locked gate and locked door each end) as their entrance now. Pain in the arse!!

Mynameisrow · 14/06/2020 14:33

My neighbour did this! Attached a trellis to my side of the fence. I asked him nicely and gave him a week to take it down. He apologised and said he would.
After the week it was still up so I went round again and he said he didn’t see an issue as it wasn’t doing any harm. So off I went back home, straight into my back garden and I removed it all and threw it over the fence. It’s never gonna back up.

What annoyed me the most is that you can’t access our garden except through our house so he climbed into our garden to attach it! He also used a sprayer to paint the fence when I had a white wash on the line. Anyway sorry, I’m going off on one, he drives me barmy.

You’ve asked and they haven’t done anything, I’d just remove it and place it back in their garden OP.

Ellie56 · 14/06/2020 14:33

Wow I would be fuming if they had damaged my new fence. You need to tell them to move that monstrosity and build it on their own side (although as pp have said it probably contravenes planning regs anyway) and they should replace any damaged parts of the fence. CFs!

TheGreatBritishLockdown · 14/06/2020 14:34

And their washing won't magically dry beautifully in the rain just because it's covered. Confused

not "magically", but naturally yes, it will dry if it is out of the rain Grin
How do you think people manage without a dryer?

OP, your neighbours are CF!

Highlights12 · 14/06/2020 14:38

You need to make sure the roof of it slopes towards them otherwise when it rains you will end up with the rain falling off the roof onto your side of the fence.

AcrossthePond55 · 14/06/2020 14:38

I'd pop this through the letterbox today;

"Hi NDN! I see that you haven't had time to remove the screws from my fence. Just to let you know I'll be saving you the trouble and will remove them myself tomorrow morning. You're welcome, HotChoc

If they don't hotfoot to do it today, then do it yourself tomorrow. You've given them fair warning.

zaffa · 14/06/2020 14:40

Just reread and see you own it. In that case I really don't think they should attach it either side - surely the water pouring off it will damage the fence and flow into your garden?

ATomeOfOnesOwn · 14/06/2020 14:44

When did you ask them to remove it?
As a PP said, it looks as though it could need planning. It's difficult to tell because we don't know the height of the existing fence but structures over a certain height need planning.

HouchinBawbags · 14/06/2020 14:46

It looks like they made the 'lean to' part as well? The overhead structure which I'm assuming is attached to their house as well as your fence? Not only is it ugly as hell but there's definitely no planning application gone in for that monstrosity. The moment you get strong winds in a storm those bits of plastic will be flying everywhere. A strong wind here smashed a neighbour's perspex shed window somehow and the day after, I found the sharp jagged foot long remains stabbed into our garden. Not anyone's fault of course as it was a fluke of bad luck and it's a shame their shed was damaged but flying pieces of plastic could potentially cause a lot of damage.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 14/06/2020 14:48

just undo all the screws on your side and put them in a envelope through their door

I am sure the novelty of drying the laundry in there will wear off pretty fast once they have to extricate it all from a collapsed pile of timber and plastic.
