Anyone else been caught mid kitchen renovation?

Wasn't sure whether to post here or corona but I wondered if anyone else has been caught with all the old kitchen taken out and was about to order a new one? We were just waiting to get measurements perfect. Now we have nothing and Ikea and howdens both shut. I know it's a first world problem and there are lots of worse things happening but we do have no kitchen or washing machine, garden is a death trap and only our living room with DH trying to work from home plus me and a 2 year old. Just wondered if anyone has found somewhere they can get a kitchen or any solutions? Or just a moan if you're in the same position!

we were going to order our kitchen this week and now DIY have shut the showroom but why did you demolish your kitchen before you had even ordered the new one we are going to order ours which will give us a delivery date and work the electrician plasterer and fitter round those, I don't know if they are still doing delivery option but you can order DIY kitchens online but about four weeks wait

Seahawk80 · 25/03/2020 18:58

Thanks @isseywith4vampirecats - we were waiting for the final measurements as it is an extension and complete change around. Under normal circumstances I thought I'd rather have 2 more weeks with no kitchen (we have loads of local friends family who would have hosted us for meals / weekends and done washing) and no problems with things fitting but then everything happened really fast with corona and we now can't order. I'll have a look at DIY kitchens.

Mid bathroom.
We have a bath plumbed and loo plumbed but it's very very basic. No tiles no shower no proper flooring.

Robs20 · 25/03/2020 19:00

YES! Our old kitchen has gone and we had plasterer/ electrician and plumber all booked for next week before kitchen arrives on 7 April. Currently living off microwave meals.....

Robs20 · 25/03/2020 19:01

PS we are getting ours from diy kitchens - 4 week turnaround time.

crazydiamond222 · 25/03/2020 19:11

We are mid extension but not knocked through yet. Kitchen sink and dishwasher has been disconnected. No idea when builders can continue or if windows which we have paid for will turn up. New kichen is meant to be coming from germany but factory is shut so all all a bit of a nightmare.

We were thinking of selling our old kitchen here. They have ex display and used kitchens which may be of interest. www.usedkitchenexchange.co.uk/product-category/used-kitchen/?gclid=CjwKCAjwguzzBRBiEiwAgU0FT_X-wAwldzaTedD6elL3Cr7vEe-P2tjemcWS6kd2TvGM6aoS2aqNERoCUzIQAvD_BwE

catanddogmake6 · 25/03/2020 19:16

No real solution but do really, really feel for you. Our extension was just about finished and I am so grateful as it is painful at the best of times but now must be challenging to say the least.

Vigorouspigeon · 25/03/2020 19:24

We are kitchen-less and have set up a make-do kitchen with cheap combi-microwave (aka can oven bake fish fingers etc and microwave stuff) and a cheap two ring electric hob. Both were from Argos and cost around £120 all in. We use the sink in the bathroom which is a faff but ok, and still have our old fridge freezer. I think Argos are still delivering and they can come same day. Hope that’s helpful!?

Vigorouspigeon · 25/03/2020 19:25

Ps I’m planning to donate them or use for Xmas extra cooking space once I finally have a beautiful new kitchen!

SouthWestmom · 25/03/2020 19:29

Mid bedroom? Fitted furniture on hold, old wardrobes and chest disposed off.

Have clothes everywhere and boxes of make up/crap and half decorated. Lights in a box somewhere. Can't even escape from the family to somewhere comfortable and cosy!

isseywith4vampirecats · 25/03/2020 20:47

Just looked at DIY and they are still working just not answering the phone or the showroom isn't open OP they manufacture on their premises so are still delivering to use their basket you need a list of what cupboards you want, sizes extras like plinths worktops handles if your having handles so you can go through the ordering its quite straight forward

Amicompletelyinsane · 25/03/2020 21:03

Our upstairs bathroom is completely empty. We have a downstairs toilet and shower but the room is tiny and we are a big family. Our house is full of all the new bathroom but we don't have all the little bits to put it all together. Had to cancel plastering because of isolating. Nightmare living in a building site

Rollercoaster1920 · 25/03/2020 21:09

Can't your plumber rig up something temporarily for you? Sink and hob are all you need. Do you have garden table and chairs to help?

We lived off a microwave and camping stove for 6 months during a renovation. Could eat at work though at lunchtime.

paintcolourwoes · 25/03/2020 21:11

Yes, but all we have left to do is worktops. So a mix of being grateful that it’s not a month ago, and annoyed that we are so close and I have no idea when we will finish and get a sink/hob

Casiocalc · 25/03/2020 21:11

We were meant to start with our new kitchen refit on Monday. The fitter encouraged us to take delivery of the new kitchen and all the flooring last week as he had a feeling Howdens would close. We have managed to fit all the carcasses and applicances throughout the house but fitter has now decided he will also stay off work for the 3 weeks (rightly so).
Luckily the old kitchen it still in place but the house is FULL and I’m also working from home.
I’m just hoping it can all start again in a few weeks, dreading the idea of being like this for months, it’s like labyrinth here.

NecklessMumster · 25/03/2020 21:19

mement0mori And me! Bath and loo but no sink, exposed pipes, bare floor boards and plasterboard walls. Trying to keep it all dry. Crap everywhere. Builder is asking me to order tiles online?

Seahawk80 · 26/03/2020 07:59

I feel your pain everyone. Like i said before I know that there are worse things happening but it's just so frustrating/ difficult to live in. We've had to move out as it just wasn't possible with a 2 year old but not everyone has that option. I'm waiting to hear from Ikea if we can order the kitchen online - I will report back.

There are a few kitchen places still operating (I'm a kitchen designer and I'm still working) but the vast majority of retailers don't fall under the category of essential business and will be shut.

If you're looking to still buy a kitchen, look to trade-oriented builders merchants that are considered essential and thus are still permitted to operate.

AmberleighMouse · 26/03/2020 09:19

I feel for you. If you're after something temporary and prepared to throw some money at it then have a read of this. You could get sink and WM plumbed in, add some extra surfaces and survive ok for quite a while with just a microwave and a portable ring cooker. If you have the old units still, you can stand them on the floor and use as open shelving. Toddler kept safe with a stairgate or in a highchair. Good luck, it is awful timing.

wehaveafloater · 28/03/2020 17:32

If you are looking for a design done I've just posted about the lady who did ours on another thread ( karen at OnePlan) I know for a fact that she draws for people buying from DIY kitchens as she mentioned it when we worked with her. You just need to supply the room measurements

francienolan · 28/03/2020 19:13

We moved in a week ago today. Have found the top element on the oven doesn't work. A bit concerned about money so waiting to replace until we see who at work is furloughed. We also don't have heat as the guys who were going to reinstall our radiators after plaster work didn't show up. Also was going to buy paint from b&q colour matching and don't know when that'll open again. But at least we have the hob working!

Seahawk80 · 31/03/2020 14:25

Just a quick update in case it helps anyone. Appliances online are still delivering, we've ordered an integrated washing machine and our builder is going to plumb that in with our old sink and a makeshift unit. I'm going to order a couple of folding tables that will come in handy for future bbqs etc and maybe a trolley thing. Wayfair have a lot of that stuff and still delivering. Also my sister has ordered her kitchen from Wickes - they just have a longer than normal wait time. We decided not to do that as it's only their basic kitchens and I'd rather wait to have the kitchen we want as we've spent so much already and plan to move in 5 years or so. They need something for 1-2 years which they will then move to their utility room as they are doing a huge project so it worked for them. Good luck everyone!

If you are without a cooker and hob, can I suggest a slow cooker and soup maker, both inexpensive and useful

Seahawk80 · 31/03/2020 16:54

@Charliecatpaws I have a plug in electric 2 ring hob but I'm now trying to find which box I packed the slow cooker in! Hopefully it's not one that went to my in laws!

jaffacakesareevil · 31/03/2020 16:57

Yep! Currently have the sink and cooker still working in an otherwise empty room, have had to put half the kitchen stuff into storage. Luckily we have a study so that has got the fridge, freezer, microwave etc all set up in there.
Annoyingly, although we've paid for the kitchen, they shut shop a week before ours was due to be delivered without emailing any customers!
