Dishwashers with cutlery trays

Does anyone have one of these instead of the basket ones. If so do you think it works better or does it mean you can't fit much on the top shelf.

Also is the cutlery tray removable/how do you feel it would work if your cutlery drawer is not near the dishwasher?

My husband is keen on one of these but I am not sure for the reasons above.

tray is a MASSIVE faff, you have to fart about laying the cutlery in each slot. With a basket you just drop it in and then take the basket to the cutlery drawer afterwards. Unless you are doing silver service it really doesn't take long to chuck knives, forks and spoons into their separate sections in the drawer.

wifework has no place in this house unless I employ staff.

sunshinesupermum · 09/03/2020 13:20

You can lift the tray out of the Miele but I never do, just gather up all the cutlery and take it to drawer - simples. No faffing about needed.

SoupDragon · 09/03/2020 13:22

It's really no different to dropping it in a basket.

picklemewalnuts · 09/03/2020 13:32

@floranomad, you can buy a replacement basket really cheaply. A couple of quid.

minniemoll · 09/03/2020 13:33

I bought a dishwasher in a rush a couple of years ago, without time to go into details, so I went for a Bosch thinking it would be reliable. Big mistake, it has constant errors and is generally a pain.

But it also has a cutlery tray, which I hadn't realised, and hated at first, but now I've got used to it I like it. I do group different types of cutlery together, which makes emptying it easier. And you get more room on the bottom tray. I've not had a problem with glasses not fitting on the top tray.

We have a Neff one with a tray at the top and I wouldn't go back to baskets as this has much more space. Neff, Bosch and Siemens all made by the same company.

My cult left drawer Miele must be at least 10 years old now. It's super quiet and cleans well. Expensive yes but worth it. Love it!

BrokenToys · 09/03/2020 14:08

Urgh *cutlery drawer

jay55 · 09/03/2020 14:42

Mine has it, it's brilliant. Saves space, cutlery dries better and no issue of knives bing the wrong way up.

Seeline · 09/03/2020 15:33

xyz I just load all the cutlery first, don't have to keep pulling the shelf in and out.

ChicChicChicChiclana · 09/03/2020 15:43

Mine has got both

SpeckledyHen · 09/03/2020 15:47

Invest in a Miele if you can . They last forever .

Raera · 09/03/2020 15:57

We have a Bosch.
Tray means so much more room on the bottom rack, much prefer it to a basket.
The only thing that won't fit in it is a soup ladle, all the other large utensils are fine.
The upper rack is adjustable and I set it high at one side and low at the other to help with taller items.

gingercat02 · 09/03/2020 16:01

I a miele one from a MN product test the cutlery drawer is fab. Things are much cleaner

PorpentinaScamander · 09/03/2020 16:03

I have a miele, thanks to a mumsnet product test. I LOVE it.
I group all my cutlery in the tray then take it out a handful at a time.
The top drawer is height adjustable so plenty of room for everything.

HungryForSnacks · 09/03/2020 16:04

Love the cutlery tray. We wash baby bottles in ours so it's been great for teats and other random parts. Less bending down as well!!

Our cutlery drawer is right next to the dishwasher but I still bundle up the spoons, forks etc before putting away. It wouldn't be much more work if the drawer was further away

Mrsladybirdface · 09/03/2020 16:08

I have a hisense dishwasher which was decently rated on Which. I was umming and arring because of the cutlery tray and actually I love it. Would recommend the hisense if you are on more of a budget

BikeRunSki · 09/03/2020 16:08

We have them at work with cutlery trays rather than baskets. It’s really annoying emptying the dishwasher that is at the other side of the kitchen to the cutlery drawers.

We recently got a new dishwasher at home. I insisted on a cutlery basket!

minipie · 09/03/2020 17:23

Mine is a Bosch with a tray. I didn’t really want a tray but all the higher end spec dishwashers (eg the quietest ones which I wanted) had trays instead of baskets.

I’m a total convert. I can fit much more in the lower section as there is no basket so all our pots and pans go in as well as plates. It’s no more faff to put cutlery in the tray than in a basket. And no more of those times when you miss the basket and have to fish a teaspoon from the bowels of the dishwasher. The upper rack is height adjustable so I can still fit plenty in if I have it on the lower setting. Oh and the cutlery rack is also great for small items like lids that get lost elsewhere.

BUT... BUT... it would be a real pain if our cutlery drawer wasn’t right next to our dishwasher.

dementedpixie · 09/03/2020 17:27

Mine is a bosch logixx and has the tray. Frees up more room in the bottom rack. Dishwasher isnt right next to cutlery drawer but is close enough. I try to have sections in the tray so that you can bundle up each item of cutlery to put it in the drawer

jackparlabane · 09/03/2020 17:43

I didn't like the tray, and struggled to lay cutlery in it neatly. I do sort cutlery by plopping it into different compartments of my basket, but DP mixes them all up because he is a complete Philistine. The basket is vital as our cutlery drawer is a few steps away from the dishwasher.

PigletJohn · 09/03/2020 18:24

the trays are very handy, but if you want, you can buy (extra) baskets as accessories for a few pounds, for example if you have lots of cutlery, or want to lift them out to put the stuff away.

have a look at how the top level in the dwr can be raised and lowered, and take your largest dinner plate to the showroom to see how easily it fits. Our largest plates are 300mm and the upper dwr tray has to be in the raised position.

PigletJohn · 09/03/2020 19:09

spare baskets

Arseit · 09/03/2020 19:18

I got this Which? Best Buy one and I’m really impressed.
