Despite their size, children manage to take up more space in a home than many parents ever bargain for, making ample storage space an even more precious commodity than it was before children for many parents. With this in mind, IKEA would like to hear about the ways you make the most out of your storage spaces and how it’s made your life easier.

Here’s what IKEA has to say: “The house can often feel crowded after the festive period but a few small changes can make a big difference. Adding hooks and storage solutions at a lower height gives children the freedom to tidy things up by themselves. Remember children love spending time where you are so a small kitchen trolley can make a perfect mobile Art & Craft or play station that can be moved tidied away quickly.”

Maybe you have a creative way for storing lunchboxes or tips for fitting more into cupboards without them overflowing? Perhaps you swear by hangers on doors, boxes inside drawers or folding your clothes in a specific way? How have you used IKEA furniture or accessories to make the most of your space?

Whatever your home storage hacks, share them on the thread below to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 IKEA voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

Trofast units in every space possible! Grin

purplepandas · 10/02/2020 20:53

Under bed storage all the way. Also love kallaxes.

Marsis · 10/02/2020 21:00

Kallax everywhere as has already been said by many others! One by the door for keeping everything for school, swimming out of the way and easy for kids to access. Lusting after Pax wardrobes for kids rooms so would love to win this ☺️

Ds bed broke (not Ikea) & he wanted a high bed but I couldn't be bothered straining & climbing to change bedding so we went to war for a couple of weeks while he slept precariously on the broken bed.

Then we compromised by putting his bed top frame on top of Kallax units - 2 long 4x2 & a 2x2 at the bottom. His room is tiny & the setup is up against the wall but because you can reach through the kallax to the wall side units, it's easy to store & access out of season stuff.

He's 10, loves it & all his friends think it's awesome. We've been able to put up the skadis peg boards & fit in a micke desk ready for big school. He also gets to bed via a trofast ladder. He now loves his tiny room & chez nous is a happier place!

Bit messy but voila!

Absolutely loving Luxhult cabinets at the moment. Small, good looking and perfect for every day storage.

All time favourite combo though is the skadis peg board system with Algot storage and Tjena boxes. My craft room is my happy place!

Metod in the bedroom!

Step children come fortnightly so their room has to be sometimes functional to something else.

I put metod up high on the walls above their bed. It has space for duvets and linen, toiletries on shelves and clothes folded up. Underneath is lit up. They have a make-up station (narrow shelf also Ikea) and mirrors underneath the light.

Their bed is Utaker- I turn it along the wall or down the wall, top with a bed throw and cushions it can be a sofa but lift top one off and it's twin room bedroom - add the linen from the cupboard above.

Super versatile day and night whether they are here or not here.

Buckeejit that's really cool, must retain that for when I do loft bedrooms

Happierwithouthim · 11/02/2020 08:10

Mum4fergus that's class

Mum4Fergus · 11/02/2020 10:17

@happierwithouthim thank you!

AwdBovril · 11/02/2020 10:32

My tip would be make good use of under bed space as storage. I had a high cabin bed as a child, & although my room was tiny (less than 6ft square) I had enough space for all my stuff due to clever storage.

We’re currently in the midst of moving house, & I am definitely taking note of the suggestions on this thread. It will be the first time we will be allowed to decorate & fit proper storage so I’m already thinking of so many things, from the paint colours to which is the best type of shelving for books versus DVDs.

HoHoHolly · 11/02/2020 10:58

Loving these pics @mum4fergus and @Buckeejit

Really great thread. It might just be me being middle-aged but I'd love to see this in Classics Blush

We use Ikea picture ledges for toy cars, it keeps them accessible and I find the die cast cars stay in better condition than when we had them in boxes.

Happierwithouthim · 11/02/2020 11:27

I'm moving house and wondering what tools I need for fixing IKEA units to block walls, drill & screwdriver?

PandaToTheMasses · 11/02/2020 11:44

The Variera metal shelf insert. Tip it upside down and drill it underneath shelves/cupboards to maximise storage. It also saves the hassle of drilling into wall tiles/brick walls.

BloomedAgain · 11/02/2020 11:57

I used various sizes of Billy bookcases with some slicing up and additional trim to completely cover three walls of a room and make a library. I use pressure curtain rods and butchers' hooks to hang my collection of very large pots and pans in the kitchen.

PerkingFaintly · 11/02/2020 12:03

I'm totally stealing this pressure curtain rods and butcher's hooks idea.

EagleVisionSquirrelWork · 11/02/2020 12:17

Everyone's very Ikea-ish today! My best storage decision ever was getting rid of the shelving we had in the living room and replacing it with a giant chest of drawers (not Ikea, sorry, though I happily would). Now I just chuck everything I can't find a place for in the chest instead. I bought it last autumn and it's still half empty. If it ever gets full I guess we'll just have to move house. Labour saving, space saving, looks good, has space for nice stuff on top. Perfect. Smile

Chocolatecake12 · 11/02/2020 12:40

I came on to say Kallax units but see I’m not the only one!! I have one in nearly every room but as a pp said - please Ikea make a 3x2 one!!
Each of my children’s rooms have them, I have one in the lounge and one in the den. The boxes are ideal for hiding away all the stuff you don’t want to be seen and the left over squares are great for showing off photos and other items!

We use a lot of kallax and trofast for toy storage. We have attached stuva drawers to the walls inside my son's fitted wardrobe to increase the options in there. Also used the bastis hooks low down for the kids to hang their coats/bags for school.

TheClitterati · 11/02/2020 18:44

I'm now building a bed in the wall in dd2's room - knocking through into the space above the top of the stairs. Under the bed are several large drawers - enough space for clothes, shoes and toys too.

She loves barbies and we put a shoe holder with all the clear pockets on the back of the bedroom door to hold all the dolls!
