Despite their size, children manage to take up more space in a home than many parents ever bargain for, making ample storage space an even more precious commodity than it was before children for many parents. With this in mind, IKEA would like to hear about the ways you make the most out of your storage spaces and how it’s made your life easier.

Here’s what IKEA has to say: “The house can often feel crowded after the festive period but a few small changes can make a big difference. Adding hooks and storage solutions at a lower height gives children the freedom to tidy things up by themselves. Remember children love spending time where you are so a small kitchen trolley can make a perfect mobile Art & Craft or play station that can be moved tidied away quickly.”

Maybe you have a creative way for storing lunchboxes or tips for fitting more into cupboards without them overflowing? Perhaps you swear by hangers on doors, boxes inside drawers or folding your clothes in a specific way? How have you used IKEA furniture or accessories to make the most of your space?

Whatever your home storage hacks, share them on the thread below to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 IKEA voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

Definitely pull out baskets and boxes for storing stuff. Makes it so much easier to find and sort though. For example, on the utility room we have a sealed box with all shoe cleaning kit in it and a basket with all hats, gloves, scarves and waterproof trousers, all rolled and stored vertically Marie Kondo style for ease of finding stuff.

DH is a storage ninja in the garage and we have various wall hooks to store things like ladders and bungees across the ceiling to store things like wind surfers.

However, inside the house there is definitely not enough storage space despite it being a key aim for the house renovation for the architect. We need to figure out how to beat kit out a closet space we've created in our DD's new room. In addition, we're planning on creating a walk in storage space on the top landing to make the 'out of the way' storage area come true.

We use Trofast units to organise the kids shoes and bags in our hall. They each have a deep drawer for shoes, then one each for their school/nursery bags and hats/gloves. They know as soon as they come in to pop their things away as the drawer are so easy for them to use themselves, no bags left lying around to trip up on.

Kallax units lengthways along the wall so Ds has space to play with all his play sets and storage underneath.

Too many children in this house. We have under bed storage under high sleepers, plastic storage inside and on top of wardrobes and plastic boxes in the loft, this has taken about a year of organising and being ruthless with clutter. Ruthlessness is an ongoing project but it's Devi rarely more liveable now and kids are enjoying a bit more play space

Ottoman bed in DD's room fits LOADS of toys under - she's 13 but not ready to part with lots if soft toys and doesn't really want games on display. She has Ikea wardrobe and drawers and also Kallax.
I'd love DS aged 11 to have an Ottoman bed too but he's attached to his mid-sleeper. So it's all shoved underneath but visible.
We have an Ikea day bed in spare room/office and the drawers are full. It doubles as a settee when I'm working.

Our biggest storage hack is our over stairs cupboard, with added chunky bookshelf (ikea, but I don't know the name. V. impressed with all the people who do), This uses totally deadspace for books and dvds and pictures and stuff.

Second hack is using a square ikea coffee table (you know the one) as an under desk printer table. The printer is still accessible, but no longer takes up precious space on the desk. It does help that I'm only 5 foot tall, so have very short legs and don't need the leg space :)

Storage us limited in our house, wardrobe on landing with boxes on top and underneath, hooks on the side. Hangers over every door. Vacuum pack bags for bulky bedding and summer clothes or clothes waiting to be passed down. Ikea fabric drawer dividers for all bedroom drawers.

IKEA Dimpa storage bags - have transformed my wardrobe! I pack away the previous season's clothes into one of the Dimpa bags, and put it up in the loft, and then bring down the new season from the loft. Still fresh and clean thanks to the great design of the bags 👌

We love Kallax for toy storage too - absolute no brainer - but I've also just discovered the Hemnes 2 compartment shoe cabinet (the taller one) for my towel storage! I have barely any storage space upstairs so this bad boy just outside my bathroom with the towels rolled up in is amazing!

Our DDs room is a box room and space is at a premium. There is a chimney breast with a fireplace on the short end of the room making the two alcoves on the side unusable for many of the usual furniture.

We put a bestå tall unit + 1 on top in one of the alcoves and 3 eket units and a small eket on the wall above in the other. In the bestå we put a stuva clothes rail. Together with another 2 eket units in the room, this gives all the clothes, bedding and toys storage we need.

We used to have 4 drawers at the bottom of the bestå, but the drawers were shallow and inserts didn't fit very well. IKEAs new bestå drawers are not as deep and don't open as far, so we decided against them and replaced the drawers with shelves and another door.
I only wish bestå had internal drawers.

We also got a svärta loft bed with a micke desk underneath. Next to the bed we put a brimnes bookcase. The top of this works well as a bedside table and the drawers at the bottom are useful for toys.
We also have a small shallow stuva unit with two shelves under her bed that takes the arts and craft stuff.

These pieces works better for us as we have tried kallax in the past and it just takes too much of the room space.

We also used 2 shallow bestå in the hallway as a storage benches. As anything deeper wouldn't work in our extremely narrow hallway.

I would love to see ikea do more solutions for narrow spaces.

Kallax units for toys, stationery, bedding etc.
Our divan bed has 4 huge drawers underneath for hiding pressies, out of season clothes, spare duvet etc.
Over door hangers to make quick clothes hooks.
And I'm coveting a floor-ceiling corner larder unit when I get my new kitchen built. It's going to solve all my problems (storage and otherwise).

junenotoffred · 10/02/2020 10:14

Our Playroom/utility storage - Pax wardrobe system, built onto a wooden frame to make it deep enough for the washing machine & tumble drier, enough space for ironing board, dyson etc. Then 12 x 45litre Samoa boxes (clear so easy for small person to see what's inside) with a "one box at a time rule". Very easy to tidy at the end of the day - and if all else fails I can shove it all away and shut the doors and bingo instantly tidy room Wink

  1. Billy bookcase, keep books in order, and separate DS1 an 2 books to avoid arguments at bedtime.
  2. Door organisers for shoes and trainers
  3. Daybeds with pull out storage underneath
  4. Ikea cube shelving units as a room divider between kitchen and dining room for lots of kitchen items, baskets with DVD's and our essential 'bits and bobs box which contains batteries, blue tack, sellotape and pens.

When storing your pans, turn the lids upside down (largest pan first) and the remaining pans stack wonderfully - saving your space in your pan cupboard. When you have your bedding freshly laundered, fold and keep your duvet covers in their matching pillowcase - no more looking for your 'Thomas' or 'Toy Story' sets when changing your bedding.

blackleggingsandatshirt · 10/02/2020 11:04

I cannot do without my Trofax 3 box trolley, I have one in each of the children's bedrooms, and have covered them in their rooms wallpaper, all the lego, jigsaws, games and precious things in the drawers.
We have one in the living room covered in our silver glittery living room wallpaper for the DVD.s books, tablets and games controllers.

lovemyflipflops · 10/02/2020 11:14

Roll your clothes/underwear rather than fold, they don't crease as much and you can store more, be more organised, and fit more in your drawers without them not being able to close them. - same applies to packing a suitcase - roll and pack.

JoyceDivision · 10/02/2020 11:18

Very tall pax wardrobe in DC bedrooms, gets rid of need for chest of drawers!

Over door hangers are blooming brilliant! Coats, dressing gowns, onesies school blazers all get chucked on there rather than the floor!

pushchairprincess · 10/02/2020 11:24

Buy the Lappland unit for your living room - attach the TV to the wall slot in the sky box, and fill with little boxes for all of the 'living room' essentials - remote controls, tablets, the latest school project, It leaves the rest of your room clutter free and you'll feel super organised.

ohdannyboy · 10/02/2020 11:37

We love our Ikea storage box and TV stand in our living room, not only is it a lovely piece of furniture, I can pull out and pop all the toys, dvd's into storage boxes into the box, keep my remote controls from being lost.

hang a plastic shoe holder over your wardrobe door for your socks and underwear ! doesn't take much space and you can be super organised - works for the children's wardrobes too.

FebruaryRainandSleet · 10/02/2020 14:32

Doesn't it make the door jam, Lilly?

lillypopdaisyduke · 10/02/2020 14:54

no - I have the over door hooks - the ones you can get for bedroom doors

FebruaryRainandSleet · 10/02/2020 15:57

Ah, OK, thanks!

HerRoyalFattyness · 10/02/2020 17:00
