Hello everyone,

We are relocating to Middlesbrough from Hampshire for my husbands work. I don't know the area and would really like some advice on where is a safe place to live. I have a 9 month old and my husband works nights so I need to feel safe in the house on my own. My husband is happy to drive 20-30 minutes to work. We are considering renting or buying. Renting would pay up to £700 a month but only have a small budget for buying £100,000 so really just depends what's available. We want to find somewhere to settle as don't want to be moving again for a few years.

Thank you

Wolviston Village also very safe.

The aftermath of a nuclear war but with candy floss.

That is the best description of Redcar I have ever read!

Darlington is canny but you'll struggle to buy in the nice bits (West End) for £100k. Middleton St George, Yarm both good. Saltburn is gorgeous. A friend lives in Seaton Carew and really likes it.

Awks · 16/01/2020 18:51

What's Redcar like?

The aftermath of a nuclear war but with candy floss.

Am laughing at that 😂

Awks · 16/01/2020 18:53

Went to Saltburn for the first time last year, despite living less than an hour away. It's bloody gorgeous!

Lots of places others have mentioned are very nice though. I think you really need to have a ‘look see’ at all the areas to see where you feel comfortable. As others have said - plenty of grim places, but lots of nice ones too. Teesside in general is very good value for money though :)

Sorry for all the posts! I meant to add that I think long term renting is quite do-able in Wynyard. There’s a lot of new housing in that area so I think people find it difficult to sell and rent out instead.

QforCucumber · 16/01/2020 20:13

Wynyard is a bit of a nuisance for public transport though isn't it? Colleague of mine travels by bus to preston farm and takes her over an hour for a 15 min drive. It was £18 for our taxi on our wedding night from wynyard to Middlesbrough centre - each way that's a lot of spends if needing to be in the town (her DH after work etc) if hes at the train station I'd look more along the direct lines - eaglescliffe, nunthorpe, marton, coulby, acklam. Busses run every 10 mins. Trains every 30 mins. Driving Is under 20 mins too.

Homeforever · 16/01/2020 20:23

Middlesbrough isn't all bad. It is my adopted home and it does all right. As mentioned the likes of Acklam, Marton, Coulby are generally all ok. Hemlington is fairly deprived but the newer end is ok, as is Stainton, and both with good links.

I do agree about Eaglescliffe, I lived there for about 6 months and nearby Yarm.

Personally I would avoid north of Middlesbrough, though the night shifts would avoid the horrendous queues southbound on the A19.

penberrh · 16/01/2020 20:30

Yes, very limited for public transport - you really need to be able to drive. There is a limited (private) 'shuttle' service:

KittenVsBox · 16/01/2020 20:36

Actually, thinking about it, they frequently shut the flyover overnight, so if DH has varying shifts, I would suggest staying along the A66, or only needing to use the A19 south of the A66 - which means no Billingham.

taylorrosej85 · 16/01/2020 21:18

Wynward sounds lovely yet not sure I want to be around social climbers just want a really community feeling where I can make friends. As I don't know where I'm going to be working I think I need to stick to places that have good transport as can't see me learning to drive this year unless win the lottery.

Definitely steer clear of wynyard then :D

If they shut the flyover overnight you’ll want to be south of the river.

taylorrosej85 · 16/01/2020 21:29

I have heard from Karbon homes I have an application form to fill in to see if we qualify just not sure how long it will take they have houses in Stokesley but don't think the best transport links

Love the Redcar description! You'll love the lemon top ice creams from Pacittos though!

OxanaVorontsova · 16/01/2020 21:30

sedgefield £100,000 budget good food, good schools, good transport

RandomMess · 16/01/2020 22:04

Wait until you try a Parmo Grin what industry is your DH in, is there much chance of him getting a job elsewhere that could influence where to live?

QforCucumber · 16/01/2020 22:28

Stokesley is a small market town in it's own right so youd be fine there, however shopping and supermarkets really youd need to drive into coulby. Busses out of stokesley are 1 an hour and stop at 7pm. No train links.

Homeforever · 16/01/2020 22:32

Beyond Housing also have some shared ownership I think. They pop up on my Facebook from time to time, they have some on one of the new build estates in Acklam.

taylorrosej85 · 16/01/2020 22:35

He works for network rail so will be based at station

Had to google Parmo as had no idea

PickAChew · 16/01/2020 22:50

Parmo is bloody lovely. Thankfully, for my waistline, I can't eat that much cheese.

iamclaireandfleabag · 16/01/2020 22:59

As PP's have said Sedgefield is a lovely village. Good community and a very traditional village centre with a green, duck pond, historic church. Pubs are generally very 'foody', small selection of shops, large Sainsbury's on the outskirts, good bus links, excellent schools. £700 will get you a decent 3 bed semi in walking distance for the village centre. You will not be able to buy on £100k. The only houses like that would be an ex LA doer upper or in one of the nearby villages that wouldn't have as much to offer. Depending where in Boro you OH will be working and time of day 25-30 mins commute is quite achievable

QforCucumber · 17/01/2020 09:06

Also - if you end up in Middlesbrough itself Belle Vue Chippy do the best Parmo for your settling in night in the new house ;)

Homeforever · 17/01/2020 09:33

Can I confess, that despite living up here for best part of 2 years, I have never had a parmo. Or a yellow top. Shock

wonkylegs · 17/01/2020 10:38

I've been here for 6yrs and am yet to have a Parmo, mind you I lived in Newcastle for over 15yrs and I never had pease pudding or a stottie!
