Right, we've had enough of paying a huge mortgage on a mediocre house

so have decided to bite the bullet, up sticks and go live somewhere else! We live in the South of England, and tbh, I've had it up to here with watching half our monthly income disappearing into the mortgage black hole, when all we have to show for it is a boring as hell 3 bed semi. We both have jobs which are reasonably transferable (and have a national pay scale, so we'll earn the same wherever we live). The plan is to make our home the top priority - we want detached, old, preferably characterful and 4 bedrooms. Rural would be nice, and obvs want decent schools, but other than that we really don't mind where we go. Our extended family are scattered all over England so no preferences there. I've been quite depressed recently, and talking things over with dh, we both feel this feeling of constantly scrimping and worrying about money and not even liking the house we're in is a major factor. So - suggestions please about where we could move!

There's a Somerfield in Lampeter!

expatinscotland · 29/08/2007 16:01

Hey, no knocking £2.99 bottles of S. African wine! One of them made this month's Good Food Bargain wine of the month, you know.

Tinker · 29/08/2007 16:02

It's not a bad Co-op though - lots of ethical meats.

expatinscotland · 29/08/2007 16:03

AND organic wines, Tinker!

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 29/08/2007 16:03

notyummy are you putting around your links?

Tinker · 29/08/2007 16:03

And it has an Adams and a Dorothy Perkins inside. It's all go in Lampeter.

MrsMcJnr · 29/08/2007 16:04

Just seen your budget - some parts of Scotland would see you ok for your money but maybe not where I am. I'm afraid you'd need a bit more.

CountessDracula · 29/08/2007 16:05

oh dh thinks is ok

he says:

suits me - I could pop in there on my way home from Taff, Welsh and Partners (specialists in Sheep Law and founder members of the Celtic Baa Association)

expatinscotland · 29/08/2007 16:05

An Adams and a Perkins inside the Somerfield?!

WTF kind of Somerfield is this?

You know, wherever you go, you're bound to be near enough driving distance to a Tesco Extra these days.

They're taking over!

And every August you could rent it out for a week to one of these attendees. We weren't allowed to see what was going on because we had a man with us.... www.womenintune.co.uk/

I have worked out that with the change from our house in London we could afford to drink nice wine for 96 years which is good. I could order online to avoid wine box scenario

I was saying 2.99 for 3 litres not a bottle

Tinker · 29/08/2007 16:06

No, Adams and Dotty Ps are in the Co-op. How bizarre!

expatinscotland · 29/08/2007 16:06

Trust me, sight unseen is not okay unless you're not going to have to live there!

Never again!

At least, we were renting and the couple were eventually evicted, but it was hell.

CountessDracula · 29/08/2007 16:06

In all seriousness
I would love to live in Wales
I love wales

Celery · 29/08/2007 16:06

The Isle of Wight is a lovely place to live and still relatively affordable. We moved here from Southampton 4 years ago. DH works in Southampton and commutes - only an hour door to door. Portsmouth is also easily commutable. £280K would buy you a 4 bed detached house here.

expatinscotland · 29/08/2007 16:07

Yeah, become a 'blow in'.

WideWebWitch · 29/08/2007 16:07

£2.99 a litre has got to be vile wine
that house in Lampeter though, I want it

expatinscotland · 29/08/2007 16:08

CD, before those lovely Camelback water thingies came out, we hardcore climbers used to use the bladders from those boxes of wine. As an excuse to drink even more wine (Oh, I'm really needing a new bladder to hold my water/for camping/etc.)!

Tinker · 29/08/2007 16:08

You don't get neighbours round there though expat. Tis truly gorgeous. I'd take a punt on that if had teh money. But I do think it's quite cheap compared to what we saw in EA's windows which woudl make me wonder a bit.

expatinscotland · 29/08/2007 16:09

Not when you take that cheap plonk and make it into sangria .

CountessDracula · 29/08/2007 16:09

eff off witchface it's mine, MINE I TELL YOU

expatinscotland · 29/08/2007 16:09

You two can have the bloody house just give me Johnny Depp.

CountessDracula · 29/08/2007 16:09

we used to use those innards as pillows at festivals

CountessDracula · 29/08/2007 16:10

NO
£2.99 for 3 litres

96 years is based on NICE wine

expatinscotland · 29/08/2007 16:12

And on your liver lasting 96 years after imbibing all that wine.
