@northernruth we are paying c 2k for kitchen fitting but are in london. That includes boxing in up to the ceiling

He's a really good experienced fitter. Last time we went with a guy who was ok and cheaper but did a scrappy job.

northernruth · 20/10/2019 08:57

@wheredoes the room looks ace! Enjoy Spain. At least your delay is 10 days - we should have been finished by the end of September....

@lightlypoached so exciting that you are starting. Your kitchen set up sounds perfect!!! I love those little diggers

@notreallydumb can you phase some stuff that comes at the end? For example (minor cost chipping but it all helps) I've spent a couple of hundred pounds on new door handles, which could have been done later. I've bought relaimed doors to put on whereas the builder would have provided basic one and I could have replaced at a later date, and I've got brushed chrome light switches and sockets which could have been white plastic and replaced at a later date. Similarly with light fittings etc- pendant lights are cheap comapred to a proper light fitting etc.

So progress here is that we are starting on the utility - pics attached - and my joiners came and built the doors on the massive storage cupboard upstairs last week. On Monday they are coming to continue to knock out the space under the stairs for the utility, and to knock out between the kitchen and dining room, which is having glazed doors. The door company I found took forever to get quotes and had a long lead time so I've ordered doors from them but my joiners are building the frame and side lights for the french door. So today we have to move all our cups and bowls and microwave etc in to the new living room so they can knock through. One more week and we will be starting to put everything back together. Kitchen is being delivered 6 November

northernruth · 20/10/2019 08:59

Oh and thanks for the answer @lightlypoached - my guys have quoted £1k which seems a lot for a kitchen that's already built but I've asked him if he has any time left at the end if he can start on something else - I've an endless list of stuff for the joiners to do. he says he's based it on two of them for 3 days so it's not expensive in that regard

chopc · 20/10/2019 09:31

@northernruth I think it depends on the size of your kitchen and the number of units etc. I paid £1800 9 years ago for a 7m x 3m kitchen

I wish white light switches can come in a non plastic material as I prefer white inconspicuous switches on my white walls

northernruth · 20/10/2019 09:40

@chopc a friend has light switches that are sort of perspex and they go over your wall colour. There are also white flat plate ones that are mich nicer than the white plastc basic ones

@northernruth, 1k is a v good price for fitting. We were regularly quoted 3k. Those are very neatly finished doors!

@wheredoesthistoiletgo, I couldn't see a pic of tiled roof. But very you're glad it's done!

For those who got velux put in, have any of you tried to clean the outside from inside yet? I forgot to ask new dad about them but read that they swivel 180 to let you clean. Also a friend said her parents ones do but I'm bit scared to try. They're pretty high up.

minniemooblue · 20/10/2019 10:41

@northernruth we are having a utility put in using some space under the stairs. Looking forward to your progress on this. Do you have full head height?

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 20/10/2019 17:42

Just realised the upside of not being on site at the moment.
Decorators are due in Monday or Tuesday, and you can't paint a dusty surface, so someone is going to have to do some cleaning, mand it's not going to be me!

Extension roof looking like it's always been there, reduced bathroom window (not on the wonk).
Ignoring the unfinished downpipe

@WhereDoesThisToiletGo - that roof fits in so well. You must be pleased! Have realised when you say "This mornings picture" you mean the one that the builder sends you. LOL!

soakedat3 · 20/10/2019 21:34

Homebase have 2 x 2.5l of F&B paint for £65 just now. B&Q have it on 3 for 2 so guess that's about the same.

I wouldn't normally as it's so expensive but I had a sample from last year of Middleton Pink and thought would see how OH was with a pink utility. Didn't expect to actually love it!! It went on so well and the colour was so soft looking I have decided to just go for it. Looks great with grey units in there. Fingers crossed that 2 tins will do it!

northernruth · 20/10/2019 22:53

@soakedat3 I always get F&B mixed up at Johnstones - they have all the recipes and trade paint

Noroof · 21/10/2019 10:37

Hello... we ate still soldiering on! Finally spent last night in my own bed in my new bedroom. We are now at week 15 I think and things are so nearly finished but it's just been a series of hold ups. We went away again last week to give them a chance to finish off inside but the wrong vanity arrived so still waiting on a finished shower room. We are also slogging through the decorating as everything needs painted and glossed including 10 doors. Hoping to get carpet ordered and laid in next few weeks and that's it for inside.
Outside is another matter... we still have scaffolding and are waiting on the plaster guy to finish the gable end and then getting the steps to the patio door built. No sign of that or the downpipes. So close but so frustrating as we made such progress at the start that I almost believed the 9 week schedule

lightlypoached · 21/10/2019 13:03

help! flooring. we were going to get engineered wood but now looking at vinyl planks.

what do we think of Moduleo vs karndean and amtico?

what do you all know about it? we have to decide by end of this week...!

northernruth · 21/10/2019 17:14

@minniemooblue sorry we have a small extension out the side - we wouldnt have full height just under the stairs although it would be possible if we lowered the floor - we are fairly raised off the ground on a sloping site

@lightlypoached we saw some lovely amtico parquet which wasn't too expensive but we want carpet in the main room and will sand the floors in the hall and dining room

northernruth · 21/10/2019 17:22

Houston, we have a problem - living room is too big to carpet without having a join. Any idea if you can get 6m wide carpet?

Noroof · 21/10/2019 19:28

I think 5m wide is the max. We are needing that for both rooms upstairs

WorrisomeHeart · 21/10/2019 20:24

@lightlypoached we have Amtico Spacia and I LOOOOOVE it. For me, the colour and style was more realistic than the Karndean I saw. It is really nice underfoot and very hard wearing so far (although it’s only been down for a month 😜)

WorrisomeHeart · 21/10/2019 20:25

A reminder of how ours looks

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 22/10/2019 16:27

Back from Spain to find very small painter in situ.
Room is no longer Poo Brown (©Farrow and Ball) but white and Natural Calico which is not meant to be beige.
The not beige walls are indeed beige but I will learn to live the colour (cos I can't be arsed to change it)
House is messier and dustier than I remembered, its going to take some effort to make it look decent

OP posts:
soakedat3 · 22/10/2019 17:08

I have been glossing today so all old "glossy" bits now look beige but I will tell people it's Natural Calico ;) I hate glossing. It stinks.

notreallydumb · 22/10/2019 17:39

@ everyone, wow been away for a few day due to having a cold, it seems that everyone is racing ahead with their projects, am sooooooooo jealous. Have builders coming Friday to discuss works hope they turn up , last one didn't .

Noroof · 23/10/2019 08:25

I would just like to bemoan the prices of things which are essential but don't really look it. Item one is carpet. 1.5-2K. There's no getting away from it and it's sadly quite impossible to do cheaply.

No.2 is paint. Now I didn't even include paint in my budgeting. But feck me if we haven't spent nearly 700 quid. On flipping paint. Again I think apart from looking nice if you get it right it's a high cost item that people wouldn't even notice

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 23/10/2019 09:19

@noroof And you can't even take the paint with you if you move!

Notbeige walls have dried to a much nicer colour and are now less "pale mud" and more "light cool cream" which is v nice

2 painters here today so things moving along nicely
