Both the sound builder and the plumber went "ooo, don't like spiders" when i pointed out the big one in the sink.
So I picked it up and dropped in the drive - whereupon it did a 180 degree turn and scuttled straight back towards the house!

Had a funny conversation over the tall fence with my (unseen) neighbour who is also having an extension done. He actually lives in a different road be we face the back of his long garden and #i have been enviously watching his progress

I think we all wish we had @Noroof builder!

Wow worriesome it's fantastic!

Not impressed here after my builder reassuring me it'll all be done in 4 weeks, they've now buggered off for the day 🙄

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 13/09/2019 12:37

@WorrisomeHeart Oh, that's lovely!
The cedar clad wing is amazing - how far out does it project?

OP posts:
soakedat3 · 13/09/2019 12:47

That ceder cladding is beautiful @worrisomeHeart. Bet you are glad you went for it!

Much as I like New Dad I wish he was more like noroof's builder!

We already have cobwebs in the new utility area as New Dad likes spiders and refuses to move them as they die outside. Sigh.

chopc · 13/09/2019 13:04

@WorrisomeHeart will it be some kind of awning under the cedar cladding? Looks lovely by the way .........

flumpybear · 13/09/2019 13:17

... needless to say, we're not living there lol - I'm really impressed with our builders though - they're great! It's just so bloody expensive 😱 albeit we're taking most walls down and extending by about 3/4 the size on top of what we had

chopc · 13/09/2019 13:38

@flumpybear what are you having done apart from a loft conversion?

Spidershuffle · 13/09/2019 14:15

@WorrisomeHeart that looks amazing, I'm not surprised you're in love!

Wowsers, @flumpybear that's a lot of sky!! Sounds like an amazing project.

I see your spiders, and raise you the slug I found in the dishwasher this week - my desperation to knock the kitchen down is now reaching epic proportions. The fridge door also broke. It's like the kitchen knows what we're planning to do to it...

flumpybear · 13/09/2019 15:03

It was a 3 bed one bathroom bungalow with very low pitch roof so rubbish foemlift extension hence whole roof coming off and reshape there

All downstairs re-jigged so all walls down and going up again
Kitchen dining area where kitchen moved so all drains redone
Whole long side of bungalow external wall knocked down and extended out 2.5 metres
Snug with bifold doors on two walls so ceiling looks floating
Two bedrooms downstairs
Two bathrooms down stairs
Laundry room
Two bedrooms with en suites each upstairs for the kids
Front loft area remaining as a loft space for now but planning for window
Changing the windows at the front too as was a long letterbox window so making more contemporary hopefully with two long tall windows
Whole house being rendered in white with grey roof tiles and windows
Think that's it ... was meant to be just two rooms in the loft lol 😆

soakedat3 · 13/09/2019 16:06

@flumpybear - can you adopt me? A bathroom each is a dream home!

And YUCK at the slug in dishwasher! :O :O Your kitchen is rebelling @Spidershuffle.

There is a lot of outside work going on today. No window ledges but lots of finishing along the roofline and windows. Just bog standard uvpc for us but it's looking quite smart now. It has strangely made the extension look new-er somehow. Maybe it's the peeling off of the plastic wrap! :D

chopc · 13/09/2019 16:25

@flumpybear sounds amazing! Wow what is the timescale for this project and if you don't mind how much is it costing your?

We are knocking down wall between kitchen and dining room , extending out by only 1.2m and doing a loft conversion - and for the build only it is costing us around £132k excluding kitchen, windows, flooring etc

flumpybear · 13/09/2019 17:47

@chopc - mine includes windows not kitchen bathrooms flooring - it's about 50k more than you're paying

flumpybear · 13/09/2019 17:48

@soakedat3 - of course ... for a small fee lol 😆

gleegeek · 13/09/2019 18:01

Eugh to the spiders and slug! We haven't had any beasties inside as a result of the build - yet - but we do have a lot of spiders anyway.
We said goodbye to our lovely brickie today...he has been great and worked so fast. Apparently we are now back on schedule, ready for the roof to be done next week! Hooray!
Our wee extension looks minimal compared to your whole house remodel flumpybear

Been away for a few days to have a break. Great to see the progress, @lightly I sympathize with the planning issues they can be a bunch of ..... And breth. Doors look great @worry and well done to those with progress. We have a new front door being fitted Sunday, and have done a good bit of wallpaper stripping in the rear of the house. It was hung in 1987! Any my wonderful husband spent a day widening the fireplace as I thought it was too narrow. Feeling a bit guilty now as he is pretty exhausted.

Noroof · 13/09/2019 22:58

Wow the price difference is amazing. We have had the whole roof taken off, new roof with 2 new rooms, new shower room, staircase, kitchen knocked into dining room, new kitchen fitted (although we bought kitchen etc on top of builder price)and knocked in patio doors, new back door and windows plus had all the walls and ceilings plastered for 72k and I thought that was pricey!

chopc · 14/09/2019 06:57

@Noroof where in the country are you?

Noroof · 14/09/2019 07:34

Perthshire

northernruth · 14/09/2019 08:31

Right I've now mostly RTFT. @soakedat3 I have the same made.com lights - I got the wall lights for the living room in frosted glass and black nickel - so at a pinch I can get the main ceiling light to match rather than use the vintage one. The builders will pay for a replacement I think, it's the problem of finding replacement shades to match.

I've calmed down about the bathroom. A bit. I think that I had to make certain compromises in trying to turn a 1920s semi into the smblance of a modern detached - upstairs I had to choose between bedroom sizes and the bathroom. I've scoped out the size of my daughter's bathroom and we will have enough room.

I've got a kitchen planning appointment on Wednesday with Wren kitchens but I am going to look at Better Kitchens - albeit I want a pale blue kitchen, and for Better Kitchens the delivry for a bespoke colour (which we would need, I want baby blue rather than grey blue) is first week of December which feels a bit close to Christmas! I wonder if I could get the units delivered (since they will be standard) and the doors later? That way I could have the worktop templated....also the colour match from Better Kitchens is for painted units, whereas Wren is laminate, which I think will weather better.

What is the minerva? I'm wanting Quartz but am open to ideas....

The new kitchen area is looking great, the chimney breast has been totally opened up and we will be able to get a breakfast cupboard in there.

@Slightlysurviving so sorry to read about your bat issues!!! or non bat issues........so frustrating

I think we might win on timescales tho. We first saw an architect about 6 years ago and have been dithering about an extension ever since....our build is dragging on BUT we have a local builder who uses subbies, he says he's a project manager but I have done a lot of it. The upside is that the total build cost (excluding plumbing and electrics) is £80k for a double storey side and single storey front extension. Extras are the painting of the render (which despite allegedly being white is in fact cream - will cost £1000 to paint plus paint cost plus £350 extra for scaffolding) and that's it for now.

We have had endless problems with the french doors - we have gone for heritage aluminium from BM bifold doors. They look like Crittall windows. All the sightlines are out of whack, and we have had delays with delivery. We had a quote from another company (Marlin Windows inKeighley) but they came in at £12k vs £7.5k for BM. I think that we would have windows that were right if we had used Marlin - I do think we'll get there with BM, just need to keep pushing them. And a £4k saving is well worth a bit of delay. It has held us up on the build overall tho.

Steve the plasterer is here rendering the front of the house in the beige render, the last remaining window will be fitted next week (with reproduction stained glass), I've had the tiler round to measure up the bathroom and downstairs loo, I've found a fireplace for the living room for the woodburner so that will be fitted in a couple of weeks, the electrician is here next week first fixing the kitchen. I think I'm just at the stage where Ive fallen out of love with it all and am worried we made all the wrong decisions.

soakedat3 · 14/09/2019 09:11

@northernruth, it does sound like this is a low point where there seems to be more problems than progress. Maybe once tiling has been done they will help you get over the hump. I think I ended up muttering to builders about needing to see progress when I was at that stage and our build was no where near the extent of yours or others on here! The TV shows really don't show how emotionally challenging it can all be! It can feel like constant nagging of lots of trade children!

A house near us has just started an extension. I am at the "never again" point as it reminds me of when we had a big moat. I really thought we'd be finished by now! But no, still no radiators and windows ledges on outside. The 600 tall unit is incomplete and am in discussion with supplier with regards to hinges and innards. Also wish had thought to put a socket inside.

I have cheered myself up by filling the 1000 corner cupboard. I thought the top corner areas would be no man's land but they are reasonably accessible.

Ladies - help me with kitchen work surfaces - we're reusing some of our granite which is on the floating island - these cupboards are white and granite is Norwegian blue pearl granite

The L shape kitchen area will have navy blue cabinets (Howdens Matt blue Clerkenwell) and I like the white glass effect laminate they have as a surface but wondered what may be better - must be relatively inexpensive though as got so much to pay for we have to keep costs reasonable

I'd love granite but is there anything in between laminate and granite that's ok and good prices?

Thank you MN DIY Gurus

chopc · 14/09/2019 09:30

We are having white quartz with the same navy blue units - unsure about price
