Thinking of moving to Yorkshire - thoughts please...

I liked the look of:

Hebden Bridge - bit scared about the flooding though...
Holmfirth
Richmond

Maybe people would have other suggestions for nice similar places.

thats a great idea the houses there are a reasonable price and there are lots of new develpments.york is a lovely place the people there are so nice i have a friend who began working there then decided to move there earlier this year she says that she loves it there

Cottipus · 17/08/2019 21:06

It’s a big area with a huge variance in price/property types. Do you have a preference where you’re based?

A bit of a generalisation but this is my thoughts. North Yorkshire is very pretty and rural but pricey. East Yorkshire is rural and generally good value but commuting for jobs is more challenging. South/West Yorkshire are cheaper than North Yorks and handy for jobs/amenities but generally more built up than North/East Yorks.

If you can give an idea of budget/house style/preferences I can put my thinking cap on.

jobhunter7 · 17/08/2019 21:14

will it be a flat cap?

Totally depends on what you are after as Yorkshire is rather large... The ones you have chosen are quite different to each otherI would say. Other ones to add to the mix would be the towns going up the A65, Beverley, Malton, Ripon.

NoNoNoOohmaybe · 17/08/2019 21:20

Yorkshire is massive and the places you've suggested are quite different (well holmfirth/Hebden vs Richmond). As well as a long way apart in distance.

It would help if you narrowed down what you're looking for, commute, budget, if schools or local amenities matter. Distance from a city etc.

@jobhunter7 Grin

jobhunter7 · 17/08/2019 21:50

It'd be nice to be on the edge of some pretty countryside. A sprinkling of shops would be good.

hebden bridge is pretty but yes the lower parts flood on a regular basis but good transport links to manchester and leeds by train, but the main road is a nightmare for traffic ,
holmfirth is on the edge of the derby dales so town and country and not far from huddersfield if you want town and train links ,
i live in halifax small town with lots of facilities and some nice parts (i live in norton tower nice part) good train links to cities, reasonable priced houses 3 bed semi where i am 150k , sorry dont know other parts

isseywithcats · 17/08/2019 22:08

oxenhope is another nice town and near to haworth, hebden bridge over the moors

Hoppinggreen · 17/08/2019 22:09

Marsden or Slaithwaite ?
Hebden Bridge is nice but yes the flooding can be an issue, even if an individual house isn’t affected there is only 1 main road in and out and that can get blocked. The trains stopped too recently for a bit due to flooding

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 17/08/2019 22:17

Skipton and surrounding area fits the bill. A bit pricey but depends where you’re moving from.

howwudufeel · 17/08/2019 22:19

People are calling Halifax the Shoreditch of the North. I don’t know if that would be a good thing for you though.

Garageflower172 · 17/08/2019 22:19

Marsden/Slaithwaite are pretty, but in catchment for a terrible high school.

Bumpandtoddler · 17/08/2019 22:24

I come from a village near Richmond and went to school there, it is lovely. Also lived in York and Ripon both also lovely. Richmond and Ripon both have enough shops to get by mostly without having to go to the big shopping towns. Ripon is a city but is very quaint and town like. I blooming love Yorkshire!

Hoppinggreen · 17/08/2019 22:32

howwudufeel I grew up in Halifax and that’s pretty funny
Halifax is like the anti Shoreditch

northernruth · 17/08/2019 23:50

Halifax is NOT the Shoreditch of the north ffs where do these journalists get off.

Where are you now? Hebden Bridge is lovely but very bohemian/ alternative/ hippie and its an absolute ball ache to get to and from.

Similarly Holmfirth is a bit arse end of nowhere - nice there itself but hard to get to anywhere else.

I live in Leeds and it's easy to get to the countryside from here. Nice market towns are Skipton (good access to Dales and to Leeds), Settle (bit far out but pretty). Ripon is lovely and a good size.

Richmond is an awful lot further north up the A1 and a different thing entirely - we have a holiday cottage in Swaledale not far from there but it feels like a different place, and quite an army area with Catterick Garrison nearby.

There are lots of lovely villages in and around Huddersfiled/ Wakefield area which are very accessible (Wakefield is a shithole of a town but the station is on the East Coast mainline and it's right by the M1). The countryside around Huddersfield can be lovely but again, the town is a bit run down.

Ilkley and Harrogate are the main commuter towns for Leeds if you don't want to live in a big city.

Also Sheffield is delightful as a city, small, nice suburbs and really easy access to some of the most glorious countryside you can imagine. Rail links are poor tho.

Finally York is worth a look but the city itself is a tourist hotspot. Also over that way there are Thirsk, Pocklington, Malton....

Tell us what you're after and where you are now and we can help narrow it down. Be wary tho because some towns are VERY provincial (Castleford, Dewsbury, Clekheaton...)

howwudufeel · 17/08/2019 23:55

I thought it was a funny quote!

Cottipus · 18/08/2019 07:36

There’s still a huge choice even then OP! I’m assuming you have a healthy budget?

Some really good suggestions upthread, I echo the Beverley/Malton suggestions. Also had some friends who loved living in Tadcaster but it was badly affected by the floods a few years ago, so check the flood maps. Wetherby is a pretty market town, plus Boston Spa nearby is nice. Helmsley is a great little place, Pickering is its cheaper relation.

I think the best thing to do is visit some places. The Manchester “end” of Yorkshire (Slathwaite, Hebden Bridge etc) is totally different visually and culturally to the “York” side. Also so much depends on whether you are a retiring multimillionaire who can live anywhere or a working person with a lower budget who needs good transport links.

missl1 · 18/08/2019 07:36

It would be helpful to know what sort of area you're moving from - what sort of thing you're used to. Obviously parts of North Yorkshire are a lot more affluent than West/ South Yorkshire. Marsden and Slaithwaite are what I'd call regular Yorkshire villages - not posh, but doing OK, certainly not deprived like some areas.

Standard in the Colne Valley is to attend the local village primary school and then move onto the local high school which someone has described as terrible. On paper yes it's Requires Improvement but it's also a feeder school for Greenhead Sixth Form College which is one of the most sought after Sixth Forms in the country, certainly in Yorkshire so if you kids can do alright at GCSE they'll end up a very good place for A-Level.

Chickencellar · 18/08/2019 08:11

I'm not aware that CV directly links into Greenhead college. CV are in the same trust as Mirfield college though. Greenhead college is a stand alone college , lots of competition to get in they will take the top of gsce results.

LumiereLennie · 18/08/2019 08:29

Echoing above, Beverley is in Easy Yorkshire and regularly featured in best places to live lists - pretty, friendly, ‘naice’ areas, traffic not bad, and house prices less than York/Harrogate, plus quick to get to a motorway.

York is lovely and bigger, some good schools and shopping great. Lots to do in the area and transport links are good, though traffic slightly more problematic.

Harrogate is probably the ‘naice’est area, but also has massive traffic jams getting in half the time. Schools good and shopping lovely.

Good luck choosing!

UrsulaPandress · 18/08/2019 08:32

It's a big County.

Garageflower172 · 18/08/2019 08:48

There are no 'feeder' schools for Greenhead - they have their own admissions policy and it is highly competitive to get in. It's not uncommon for students to travel in from areas such as Saddleworth. Very misleading to say that CV is a feeder school.

Hoppinggreen · 18/08/2019 08:52

Yes, no feeders for Greenhead, just excellent GCSE results!
