I liked the look of:

Hebden Bridge - bit scared about the flooding though...
Holmfirth
Richmond

Maybe people would have other suggestions for nice similar places.

It was BBC 6Music who said Halifax is the Shoreditch of the North by the way.

i moved here 24 years ago and i found that yorkshire people on the whole are freindly a lot less snobby than londoners on the whole i like halifax within one hour to two hours from my house in the car we have cities, (leeds, manchester, liverpool, ) places like York, harrogate, seaside coast from whitby to scarborough, the magnificent yorkshire dales, places like malham cove, ingleton falls , go the other way and we have the peak district on our doorstep, quirky little places to visit what is not to like, yes Halifax has still got a lot of victorian back to back houses with low expectation residents but that is because these houses are cheap to buy and to rent so while they are there people will live in them we also have shibden hall home of anne lister and lots of film companies pick halifax ackerly bridge, last tango in halifax, happy valley, having not lived in shoreditch the only comparison i know is victorian times when shoreditch wasnt desirable to live in

I still don’t know if Shoreditch is a compliment or an insult.

I watched a news programme recently where a black woman and her children had been forcibly moved to Halifax from some London council estate. She was devastated at first but after a year she said she wouldn’t dream of moving back down south.

I'm from Yorkshire. Have you considered somewhere like masham? The views and countryside walks are lovely. Osmotherly, outskirts of towns Northallerton/ thirsk/Harrogate??

Holmfirth is going to get a monorail soon.

Sheffield sits on the edge of the Peak District. The outer edges are very rural, and amazingly beautiful, but have great bus routes, schools and amenities. City centre 10 mins away.

View from top of my road

Pricey housing though

Monorail? Really?

legoqueen · 20/08/2019 20:28

Have you looked at Ilkley, or the nearby villages Burley-in-Wharfedale or Addingham? Ilkley & Burley are 30 mins by train from Leeds & Bradford, lovely with independent shops & lots of great restaurants. River, moors, good sports facilities & close to the Dales. There is a good community spirit, low crime, great schools, plus lovely Victorian houses. Not at all insular & very welcoming Smile

Sheffield has supermarkets, numerous cinemas and all the other stuff you get in a city, but it's also surrounded by gorgeous countryside and the people are very friendly. Some areas can be pricey though, although if you're moving from the south that might not be issue Flooding isn't an issue, it's too hilly, water just drains away.

Oh, and yes, you can get to other parts of the country from here.

SaskiaRembrandt · 20/08/2019 20:43

Holmfirth is going to get a monorail soon.

Is that to one-up the trams in other places? Grin

joystir59 · 20/08/2019 20:51

Scarborough is less than an hour from York and has a train station with good connections to York,Hull, Leeds and Manchester. Two beaches, loads of amazing architecture and plenty shops. Not twee and expensive like Richmond and Harrogate.

joystir59 · 20/08/2019 20:53

Don't buy on Scarborough South Cliff though, it's crumbling. We live in the Old Town
