I liked the look of:

Hebden Bridge - bit scared about the flooding though...
Holmfirth
Richmond

Maybe people would have other suggestions for nice similar places.

Todmorden is the next town along t'valley from Hebden Bridge - the houses here are much cheaper and the infrastructure is better. We have a sports centre, several primary schools, an Ofsted-good high school, two supermarkets and a lovely market, as well as lots of little independent shops and restaurants and the Incredible Edible project. You'd still have the flooding problem in the valley bottom but it tends to be dealt with fairly quickly when the rain comes. And the countryside round here is beautiful (especially when it's not raining!).

We live in just outside Malton and the children go to school in York. I love North Yorkshire but wouldn’t live further than 30 mins from York/Harrogate as it gets very remote and provincial further afield

missl1 · 18/08/2019 09:18

It is one of the schools from the Kirklees area that is given priority - certainly above any school in Saddleworth. I think the official word is 'partner' school.

hsegfiugseskufh · 18/08/2019 09:22

Halifax is the shoreditch of the North? ConfusedGrin

Wow! Thats not what id describe it as.

issey maybe were neighbours i live in norton tower too!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 18/08/2019 09:24

I lived in Catterick for a bit, and found Richmond a funny place... picturesque Yorkshire village by day with teashops, theatre, castle etc.... Then Squaddie Central at night. That was prior to the shopping development opening in Catterick so may have changed.

Thirsk is nice too.

WalkofShame · 18/08/2019 09:26

Poor rail links in Sheffield?

London
Leeds
Manchester
Birmingham
East coast
Penzance

And pretty much everywhere in between.
(Can you tell that I spend a lot of time at the station Grin)

Yorkshire is a huge area. What else do you need to consider? Schools? A commute? Do you drive? Do you need public transport, buses, trains? Do you need access to the M62? M1?

How far are you willing to drive for countryside, do you need a large town or city? I live in Leeds.

UrsulaPandress · 19/08/2019 08:21

Is Shoreditch a compliment or an insult?

loobylou10 · 19/08/2019 08:26

@isseywithcats - just a small correction - oxenhope not a town! Pretty little village with a shop, school, church and a couple of pubs. Smaller than Haworth I think.

No kids and work from home.

Yes. But having a train line could be nice. And I know Richmond doesn't.

Be nice if there was a supermarket. Also nice if there was a cinema (though less essential).

Is/was there a lot of trouble then?

OP posts:
Aroundtheworldin80moves · 19/08/2019 12:28

Richmond- I wasn't aware of trouble but I was a SAHM with two toddlers who didn't exactly get out much in the evenings. Plus since I left a cinema/hotel/restaurant/shopping complex opened in Catterick Garrison.

jobhunter7 · 19/08/2019 12:45

@Aroundtheworldin80moves

Did you like living there? It looks pretty and peaceful in pics...

OP posts:
Aroundtheworldin80moves · 19/08/2019 12:53

There was a lot I loved about the area. We lived in Thirsk for two years then Catterick for 2 years. There's nice walks, interesting places to visit, reasonable access to the A1 (and up to Scotch Corner to get West). Trains from Richmond not ideal as you have to get to Northallerton or Darlington.

LoveGrowsWhere · 19/08/2019 13:01

Beverley is your answer. Often listed as fab for quality of life. Market town with two large supermarkets, cinema & theatre and train station. East & North Yorkshire are IMO much easier on the eye and less populated. Anywhere to the east of York has far less rainfall.

'Settle' looks nice.

OP posts:
Otherpeoplesteens · 19/08/2019 13:49

Settle is beautiful - big enough that it is self-contained with shops, restaurants, pubs etc, but small and remote enough to have a real country/community feel to it. Right on the doorstep to the Yorkshire Dales National Park too, yet easy to get to Leeds by train. Manchester is 75 mins by car. Good state school in Settle, Ermysted's grammar in Skipton, plus one of the best private schools in the north, and possibly the country, next door in Giggleswick. During the Eighties and Nineties it was well known for having effectively zero unemployment, although I suspect that's long gone.

It's in Craven District which regularly comes out top in happiness indices.

jobhunter7 · 19/08/2019 13:59

'Settle' looks nice. Also has a supermarket, a small one but I think that would do.

jobhunter7 · 19/08/2019 14:00

I've been googling various suggestions. Thank you. Some nice ones.

OP posts:
Otherpeoplesteens · 19/08/2019 14:07

Settle has a Booths supermarket. It's big enough, but Booths is known as the Waitrose of the North for a good reason. There's also a smaller Co-Op. Tesco and Morrisons in Skipton.

@Otherpeoplesteens

I like the idea of somewhere rural but not so rural I have to drive 5 miles to the supermarket.

OP posts:
Otherpeoplesteens · 19/08/2019 14:22

You can buy everything you need, and a lot that you don't, in Settle. It's just that it won't be the cheapest way of feeding yourself.

As for cinema - the Richard Whiteley Theatre at Giggleswick School occasionally shows movies.

CoolcoolcoolcoolcoolNoDoubt · 19/08/2019 14:28

Also Sheffield is delightful as a city, small, nice suburbs and really easy access to some of the most glorious countryside you can imagine. Rail links are poor tho.

What? You can get the train to pretty much anywhere from Sheffield train station.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 19/08/2019 14:30

Do you mean you want to be able to walk to the shops, or just not have to drive for ages? 5miles in countryside is nothing. Less than 10minutes in places.
