Thinking of moving to Yorkshire - thoughts please...

I liked the look of:

Hebden Bridge - bit scared about the flooding though...
Holmfirth
Richmond

Maybe people would have other suggestions for nice similar places.

It'd be nice to walk in. Though I wouldn't mind going further afield once a month or so...

I would say edge of Sheffield too - you can be in really gorgeous countryside, yet in easy reach of everything you need in a city.

jobhunter7 · 19/08/2019 14:46

I think Holmfirth and Richmond have a Lidl.

@Aroundtheworldin80moves

Is Richmond all pretty? Or are there plenty of ugly bits too?

Depending on your budget: as PP has said, Todmorden is just as nice as Hebden Bridge and has a cracking market. Sheffield is lovely as cities go: good universities, cultural life and the Peak District on your doorstep - best of both worlds.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 19/08/2019 15:17

Centre of Richmond is pretty. Residential areas like most places, a mixture of old and new, with generic streets of identical houses. The marketplace in the centre is a massive carpark most days.

jobhunter7 · 19/08/2019 16:27

@Aroundtheworldin80moves

It does look pretty but I'm a sucker for nice architecture.

Maybe I have to look somewhere smaller though then for that...

But ideally with decent supermarket too.

@Craftycorvid

Isn't Todmorden Lancashire? Not that I'm bothered... that's a nice suggestion too... property seems cheap...

I have been googling various places and I think I preferred the look of HB slightly...

Jobhunter Tod’ is 50/50 Yorkshire and Lancashire as it’s right on the border.

northernruth · 19/08/2019 17:24

Tod and Hebden are similar although Tod is a bit more low rent (sorry, Tod dwellers). They are both an absolute pig to get to tho (long way off the motorway on congested roads. Some nice properties in and around Sowerby Bridge which is closer to the M62 and Halifax.

Apologies for the misleading Sheffiled rail comments - I did a quick check and it seems things have improved since I last looked, when it took about 4 hours to get to London.

I honestly would avoid Richmond - if you want something like that then Ripon is similar and better connected.

I also second Helmsley as it's lovely.

Further up maybe take a look at Saltburn in Middlesborough

And finally can I suggest Otley? Easy access to Leeds and the Dales, nice town feel, loads of great pubs, live music and lively theatre scene including comedy, lots of pretty stone houses, campaign to reopen the Lido, annual show/ carnival, farmers market, excellent high school. Close to Leeds Bradford Airport too.

Is flooding a problem?

Saddleworth is lovely.

Rain-soaked .... www.theguardian.com/money/2018/feb/23/lets-move-to-hebden-bridge-west-yorks

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 19/08/2019 22:24

It depends where you are in Hebden Bridge for flooding. It's all in steep valleys so up the hill a bit and it's not a problem. Heptonstall at the top of the hill is a lovely village with nice architecture.

Dh and I moved to Yorkshire (near hebden bridge) when we got married. Lasted three years. Was partly the climate I couldn’t stand - the near constant rain was so depressing. I also found the locals v insular and unfriendly. Interestingly friends of ours have had similar experience further east socially although climate there is better.
Dh is from Yorkshire incidentally! Should have known what to expect.

CoolcoolcoolcoolcoolNoDoubt · 20/08/2019 10:18

That's quite the generalisation. And absolutely not the case where I live in South Yorkshire.

BIWI · 20/08/2019 10:22

The critical thing here is your budget though! Yorkshire is the biggest county and it's hugely different depending where you are.

Hoppinggreen · 20/08/2019 10:38

thebigball I’m very surprised by that, I used to live near Hebden Bridge and have lived in the surrounding area most of my life and I find everyone to be very friendly and welcoming. Hebden Bridge is a bit if a melting pot so there are all sorts of people there from all over the world so nobody minds “incomers”. I live near Huddersfield now And a day rarely goes by that I don’t have a conversation with a complete stranger

It does rain but no more than anywhere else in The North and less than Manchester for example.

LoveGrowsWhere · 20/08/2019 11:05

It does rain but no more than anywhere else in The North

Hebden Bridge av annual rainfall 998mm
York av 621mm

Hoppinggreen · 20/08/2019 11:38

I stand corrected, it’s roughly the same as Manchester then

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 20/08/2019 13:58

Halifax? The Shoreditch of the north? Ba ha ha ha.

TheBigBallOfOil · 20/08/2019 15:38

Come on it fucking pisses down!
I know S Yorks v well (dh from Barnsley). Wouldn’t call it welcoming. Especially not if you are noticeably different from the norm.
As a scouser I will admit inherent bias but I wouldn’t advise anyone to move there tbh.
