Anyone else just moved into new home?

Looking to track progress as we settle into and start to renovate the house we moved into on 11th June and to share experiences and tips with anyone in the same boat. Please share your progress here!

Day 4 here and still tackling the cleaning currently. Previous owners had three dogs and the house was honestly the filthiest thing I have ever seen! We have a 3 week old DS and a toddler so progress is super slow.

Today we managed to:
Clean hob and cooker in full
Finish cleaning last of kitchen cupboards
Unpack majority of kitchen
Get TV set up (!)

Goals for tomorrow:
Find steam cleaner
Start tackling what looks to be years of ground in dirt on the kitchen floor
Kitchen skirtings and radiators
Kitchen door to garden

We moved in 29th may.

We stripped out all flooring and underlay, skirting and textured wallpaper, as well as tiles.

All ceilings boarded as we have lathe and plaster ceilings. One room plastered. Another room blue grit ready to plaster.

Kitchen removed completely.

Today 2 walls knocked down ready for steels and stud wall to go up to make bigger bathroom and second bedroom.

I also cut the grass 😂😂

Furble · 16/06/2019 06:50

@WBWIFE
Wow that list is so impressive. Are you doing major works or just a few small changes to some rooms? Is the stripping back in order to decorate or more? Are you living in the place through the works?

Another morning of tackling the grime awaits me shortly!

@Furble redecorating throughout, new kitchen and bathroom. No extensions or anything but we have put steels in to make a bigger bedroom and bigger bathroom and lost a small bedroom, but technically havent lost as one of the front rooms could be a bedroom rather than a lounge (were in a bungalow and plan to eventually go up a floor in a few years).

We wanted to just spruce things up but we got in and the whole house was a mess and stunk. Urine and faeces soaked throughout the floor from animals. 40 dead flies in each window. Kitchen so dirty there was no using it so it all had to come out!

Today the window was bricked up, 2 steels in and timber frame built. We also ordered our bathroom.

Yes stripped wallpaper to plaster throughout every room and then paint. Each wall had about 3 layers of textured wallpaper with very hard thick paint all over, it was the hardest paper I've ever stripped!! Awful.

Tomorrow lead water pipe being changed and upgraded to 32mm plastic pipe, woohoo! Better pressure and no leak at the very very old stop tap! DH will be first fixing the bathroom too!

No, it was unhabitable. Wouldn't have even let my dogs live in it. My nan in law was heaving at the doorstep the day we moved in, it stunk!

Luckily my dad lives two doors up so we are living with him with our 2 dogs and 18 month old DD!

Hope the grime busting went well today!

nevermovinghouseagain56 · 17/06/2019 13:02

I moved on 12th June but couldn't stay there the first night as no water or electricity.

There's only me and DH so no other commitments/distractions. First things I did was scrub the kitchen and bathroom. Made sure bed was made up and put the wine on chill.

I've unpacked a few kitchen boxes but starting to wonder where it's all going to go. I've downsized and I thought I had done a good job of de-cluttering but looking around at all the unpacked boxes makes me think I'm going to have to really whittle things down.

Very happy to be in my new home though.

Furble · 19/06/2019 21:20

How is everyone getting on?
We’re celebrating one week in the house with cleaning, cleaning and more cleaning!

Today I fully cleaned out our bedroom, it has full fitted cupboards, wardrobes and drawers. Not my taste but will definitely do for the time being and lots of useful storage! Everything was fully cleaned out today ready to unpack tomorrow.

Kitchen is nearly all unpacked now, will continue with that tomorrow as well.

@nevermovinghouseagain56 How are you getting on with the unpacking and decluttering?

@WBWIFE How did the piping upgrade go?

Wbwife
About to move in and do very similar.
What's your budget?
Are you doing lots of work yourselves?
Thanks

WBWIFE · 19/06/2019 22:35

@Alexalee ours wasnt livable!

We are doing most ourselves.

DH is a plumber and gas engineer. And handy with other things. His dad can tile. His 2 best friends are electricians and a carpenter and kitchen fitter.

Electrician friend only charging for materials and same as carpenter friend who is cutting and fitting our worktops. His other friend is a plasterer who is doing it for us very cheap

Weve budgeted 15k although have more just in case

1500 on bathroom (toilet, vanity unit, freestanding bath and large walk in short plus taps etc)
5000 on kitchen and utility including worktops and appliances (we already had some appliances)
1000 on knock through of 2 rooms, inserting 2 steels and building a stud wall and bricking up window
£350 on moling the new water pipe to replace lead under the driveway
2k on plastering including materials
1200 on radiators
2k maximum on flooring throughout (carpet and underlay x 3 bedrooms, tile in bathroom and luxury vinyl tile throughout the rest) - DH can lay flooring so no labour costs or anything

Then skirting, paint and light fittings.

nevermovinghouseagain56 · 20/06/2019 21:30

Hi Furble, I'm still trying to find where I'm going to store everything. The unpacking is taking much longer than I'd anticipated as I seem to be just moving boxes about or transferring stuff from one box to another. I'm sick of the sight of cardboard now.

TiddleTaddleTat · 21/06/2019 10:16

Trying to find storage here too...
We made the mistake of sort of giving up with the movers and by the end they put stuff wherever.
Having moved in earlier this week we've unpacked most of the bedrooms but chucked a ton of stuff into the garage.
We have all the decorating and floors still to do so are trying to keep minimal amount of clutter in the house.

Furble · 25/06/2019 20:57

How is everyone progressing with their new homes?

I still haven’t finished unpacking or cleaning and it’ll be two weeks tomorrow we’ve been in. Tomorrow’s focus is the rest of the kitchen and the utility room, I can do this!!

OP posts:
TiddleTaddleTat · 25/06/2019 22:15

Ugh, so much to do here too!
Have a long list to get started with and I'm fortunately getting some time off next week to get on with house stuff.
Having a nightmare finding and fitting curtains that aren't £££, particularly on the two bay windows. Found two pairs in B&Q reduced to £10 that we are finally putting up in the living room. Still have old curtains clipped to the bedroom window until payday Blush
Going to start the lining paper and painting next week. Have lots of samples to test ...

Boholady · 26/06/2019 09:02

I'm following! We exchanged on Monday and completing/moving in a couple of weeks.

Furble · 26/06/2019 17:17

Congrats @Boholady ! Looking forward to hearing your progress soon! Are you moving straight in?

Today we ripped out the fitted furniture in DS1s bedroom preparing it for decorating (thanks to my fab step dad) whilst I scrubbed the loft conversion bedroom and bathroom. Also scrubbed the bannisters and skirtings up to the loft conversion.

We also had a gardener round to start tidying up the garden, sprayed the terrace and tidied up the whole back garden it looks so much better.

Will see if DH can drag me off the couch to do some more when he gets home, am 4 weeks pp and still bringing my strength up.

How is everyone else getting on?

OP posts:
Boholady · 26/06/2019 18:36

Yes furble, we are moving straight in. We are relocating and downsizing financially, but seemed to have acquired a bigger house lol

Our new house has a loft conversion with shower room too.

I'm incredibly impressed with how much you are doing 4 weeks pp! Over the last year I was diagnosed with a neuromuscular disease and I can no longer work, which is why we are downsizing to be mortgage free. It has taken me all day to clean out our food cupboard lol

TeamUnicorn · 26/06/2019 21:53

Sounds like some exciting work going on - I hope you all get sorted soon.

We moved in a year ago tomorrow - apart from a few new blinds and some curtains we have done nothing. I really need to get onto the dc bedrooms (the main one is fairly ok). The lounge/dining room is a long term project.

In my defence I have been concentrating on the garden, its a big garden and whilst not badly maintained has needed quite a lot of bits and pieces done.

TeamUnicorn · 26/06/2019 23:06

Oh and we* still have boxes to unpack.

By we I obviously mean dh, they are his boxes and he is the one who is at home every day with 3 dc at school.very sore point

Furble · 27/06/2019 09:03

In need of some motivation this morning. It’s just me and the baby at home (no toddler) which means I could get a lot done but I’m tired and sore after yesterday’s antics and lacking motivation a bit!

Today’s to-do:

Make our bed
Wash and dry two loads as weather is lovely and I finally have a garden to dry clothes in!
Hoover stairs carpet
Continue scrubbing bannisters to completion
Clean and finish unpacking main bathroom
Make falafel 😄

If the baby and my tired body let me get that lot done I will be very happy. Will report back later.

Furble · 27/06/2019 09:04

Welcome @TeamUnicorn and congrats on one head in your new place! Care to join me in tackling one of your projects?

OP posts:
Furble · 27/06/2019 09:07

@Boholady any update on your moving in date? Have you started packing yet? 🙃
Sorry to hear about the neuromuscular disease, does it impact you a lot physically? (Sorry if that’s a silly question).

OP posts:
WBWIFE · 27/06/2019 15:10

Weve a few more rooms plastered and a doorway bricked up.

Currently at glasto festival this weekend so all works on hold till Tuesday Haha

Boholady · 27/06/2019 17:40

@furble we are moving on July 12th...I've spent this week so far organising all the things that can be done via phone/online like the removals, cat transport, etc. Packing boxes coming tomorrow.

We had a massive declutter before putting the house on the market in March, so not that much to do now and some things like books and pictures I packed weeks ago.

Unfortunately I'm in the middle of a flare, so this week I've tried to rest and just do stuff by phone/online as much as possible. With a flare, I have problems with fatigue, weak arms and legs, and if things get serious, with my swallowing and breathing. So far I've managed more or less to keep on the right side of things lol

This time in 2 weeks we will be sitting in our new house! Take things easy yourself too x

Jem01 · 28/06/2019 07:01

We moved back in May. Carpets being removed today and rewiring begins the on Monday- have prepared for a dusty 3 weeks!

buddy79 · 29/06/2019 13:12

JOining in for motivation and/or sympathy! We moved on 14th with then 7 week old ds2 and 4yo ds1 . Not a complete renovation but certainly some updating! We too had dog wee smell and sooo much dirt but since cleaning realise the wee is actually only coming from the lean-to (concrete floor), not the rest of the house phew!! If I can’t get rid of the smell we will re-concrete the floor! Any other suggestions? Been a bit haphazard but so far we have cleaned everything, stripped wallpaper in 1 bed (aiming to do second this week), got quotes and arranged for recarpetting all upstairs, quotes and arranged for garden clearance, and unfortunately found out we also need to replace boiler, which is being done Monday. Getting roofing and rear pipe work liked at by a builder relative in a few weeks to do repairs before autumn. I’ve found it really hard to be so limited in what I can do as breastfeeding ds2 and he will also only nap in sling- took me a week to clean out kitchen cupboards!! Feels a bit as though the house owns me at the moment... anyone else?!

Furble · 29/06/2019 16:34

@buddy79 Solidarity sister! I’ve got a nearly 5 week old and we’ve been in the house just over 2 weeks, progress is soooo slow. I’ve still not finished cleaning nor unpacking 😬😬 Really hoping to break the back of it next week, but it knackers my back wearing him when I’m cleaning!

OP posts:
Littlemissdaredevil · 29/06/2019 20:49

I’m buying a house on Tuesday but not moving in yet as the house has a damp problem. First thing on the list is to get the roof fixed and pointing done to stop the damp coming in!
