Would you live next door to a graveyard?

DH and I have been looking at a house we really like and are considering buying. The only problem is that it's right next door to a graveyard. (And I don't mean a few headstones in a churchyard - I mean a full-on cemetery.)

Personally I don't have an issue with it at all (at least the neighbours will be quiet). Also, it's locked at 18:00 each day, so there shouldn't be yobs hanging around in it. DH, however, is more concerned and a bit unsure about it.

Would you buy a house next door to a graveyard? And do you think such a location would devalue the house?

We live right next to a graveyard, it's great. Very quiet apart from lots of twittering birds. The dds use it as an extra garden, they skate and scoot along the paths. It's a rather pretty graveyard in a village though and not particularly spooky.

Well, it's all about location isn't it? I'd live next door to Hampstead Cemetery without a minute's hesitation. But some cemeteries are very undesirable.

Highgate Cemetery.

I probably wouldn't have a problem with it to be honest. Then again, I have a morbid fascination with cemeteries One of my first ports of call in Paris was Pere Lachaise

i grew up in a house overlooking a huge cemetary, it is very peaceful and lovely actually, not creepy at all.

Live just around the corner from the graveyard here, its surrounded by houses and is nice and quiet.

Trinityrhino · 29/07/2007 10:36

I did for the first 19 years of my life
never really thought about it as spooky

I'm afraid of the dark though

We have an old ampitheatre (sp) out the front of our house, With a busy ish road between us (but not a wide road) and out the back a very small garden a steep bank with a railway line, them a row of trees then a large cemetary. The biggest of them here where i live. There is a smaller one at the other end of town.
In the winter we can see into it from upstairs, freaks DH's cousion out cos he reckons he can see 'things' yeah lights from the cars going past
In the summer/spring you cant see as tress are full.
I don't mind it at all.
