Would you live next door to a graveyard?

DH and I have been looking at a house we really like and are considering buying. The only problem is that it's right next door to a graveyard. (And I don't mean a few headstones in a churchyard - I mean a full-on cemetery.)

Personally I don't have an issue with it at all (at least the neighbours will be quiet). Also, it's locked at 18:00 each day, so there shouldn't be yobs hanging around in it. DH, however, is more concerned and a bit unsure about it.

Would you buy a house next door to a graveyard? And do you think such a location would devalue the house?

I wouldn't buy a house next door to a graveyard because I'm a scaredy cat. At night, if dh was out, I'd be really, really spooked (sorry for the pun)!

MrsCarrot · 22/07/2007 22:12

that would be a strange thought I guess, maybe I like it so much as it's several roads away to my house.

expatinscotland · 22/07/2007 22:12

If the house has a bad 'vibe', I'd be out of there.

It would kind of freak me out, Kerry, because I'm 'sensitive' IYKWIM and I'd be slightly concerned in case my children turned out to be, too, and 'saw' things.

expatinscotland · 22/07/2007 22:17

Also, I believe in portals. And I know for a fact that sometimes houses were built over old burial grounds that no one bothered to removed the bodies from - often the case if the ground was used for mass burials during times of plague or epidemic illness.

ruty · 22/07/2007 22:18

but the house might have a good or bad vibe regardless of the graveyard. as expat said, lots of city houses are built over old plague pits, etc. I grew up in a vicarage and my bedroom overlooked a garden of remembrance - ie place where people's ashes were buried. Had a lovely, peaceful vibe. But then I did live briefly in a very strange vicarage that overlooked a graveyard that had a bad vibe. The house more than the graveyard! It really does depend on the house.

ruty · 22/07/2007 22:19

I hear things, i don't see them expat. But that's enough!

expatinscotland · 22/07/2007 22:19

Very true, ruty. And good points.

A house can have a bad vibe no matter where it's situated.

A lot of folks are living over old graves and have no clue and no problems.

KalunaLoveGood · 22/07/2007 22:19

no. I've been to look at a house recently that had a graveyard at the bottom of the garden.
Too creepy
nope
nope
nope

ScottishMummy · 22/07/2007 22:35

personally yes not as if the graveyard inhabitants are noisy as u say..not a problem to me. if it is a nice property go for it

expatinscotland · 22/07/2007 22:39

Would be concerned about resale value if it's not the 'forever' house of your dreams.

kiskidee · 22/07/2007 22:41

they have been the most unobtrusive of neighbours i have ever had. I've lived next to a graveyard twice.

BTW when I said I hear things it is not like I'm talking to the spirits or anything!
I've just heard a couple of strange things whilst staying at strange places, that's all...

Still think that the vibe of the house is entirely independent of the graveyard next door. And there will always be people who are and who aren't bothered by it. Go with your gut. Do check it out at night though - for drunks!

sauce · 23/07/2007 09:27

No problem with living next to a graveyard. I lived with one at the bottom of the garden - a big one - and I never saw or felt anything spooky. They're interesting to walk around, actually. I liked reading the headstones.

sauce · 23/07/2007 09:30

Like expat, I'm 'sensitive' but i've only ever really felt anything in houses or buildings.

Meridian · 23/07/2007 19:09

We used to have a little cottage in heage that was very near the church and the cemetary, you could see the grave stones from the bathroom window.. very quiet neighbors

UCM · 23/07/2007 19:09

I would, but I wouldn't have wanted to grow up in one. It would have scared me shitless.

BillWeasleyBeast · 23/07/2007 19:16

I lived next to a graveyard until we moved this January. It was great, really quiet neighbours. Certainly didn't devalue the property and didn't creep me out, in fact I barely noticed it

LazyLineLegilimens · 23/07/2007 19:20

Yes I would.

We also are missing a number 13 in our road!

lapsedrunner · 23/07/2007 19:24

Yes

NadineBaggott · 23/07/2007 19:25

yes, no problem

ruty · 23/07/2007 21:45

I'm just trying to buy a house no. 13. [maybe we can almost afford it because of the number] Would you lot buy it?

tegan · 23/07/2007 21:48

I have lived in a number 13 house for 10 years and wouldn't change it.
