Help me find bedding to match curtains I don’t like....

We can’t afford new curtains yet - the previous owner left these and as the windows are huge, ready made isnt an option- made to measure would be minimum £600. We have been bought a new (larger) bed by the in-laws as a loving in present and need to buy new bedding. So, what should I choose? These are a totally different style and colour pallet to anything I would go for for bedroom curtains - I would prefer cool and fresh, natural fabrics and softer textures so I’m struggling a bit. All our other bedding is plain white which just doesn’t work with these warmer, shiny curtains....

I would go for white bedding but find a throw and a cushion in a similar colour to chuck on the bed!

VictoriaBun · 10/04/2019 08:22

I'm loving your typo.
Your in-laws bought you a new bed as a 'loving in ' present !😀😀😂😂
I'm guessing they are wanting a new grandchild !!
P.S. I hope someone has an answer for you.

PeachNut · 10/04/2019 08:23

Would THIS work?

moreismore · 10/04/2019 08:25

Just a thought but have you checked eBay? I have had some amazing £5-£10 curtains recently made with JL fabric...

Bouncebacker · 10/04/2019 08:26

Victoria bun, that’s hilarious! I totally think that’s what they are aiming for but that was a genuine typo! Peachnut - I think that would go, but it’s just but my style, i would feel like I was going into someone else’s bedroom...

I think peachnut has the right idea, but I'm not keen on full gold bedspread.
Just a throw over end of bed in one of the dark flower colors.
It's beautiful curtain fabric but I can imagine it's not everyone's cup of tea

Bouncebacker · 10/04/2019 08:28

How much tolerance is there with curtain sizes? I’ve always worked on the basis that each curtain of the pair should be the length of the whole curtain pole - how awful does it look if they are a bit narrower? Just less full when drawn?

What colour are the darker flowers, Bounce? Maroon?

Bouncebacker · 10/04/2019 08:30

Something in red or burgundy? That could work!

They are actually lovely curtains - thermally lined, triple pinch pleats - just not my choice of fabric!

Cream everything?

mum2015 · 10/04/2019 08:33

Have you checked IKEA for curtains? The readymade curtains come in really long size and you can alter length at home.

Anyway if you can't change curtain, yes just get some matching cushions.

Pigletthedog · 10/04/2019 08:33

Could you dye the curtains? Grey or something?

singingismypassion · 10/04/2019 08:34

White. We always have white bedding as it goes with everything and looks gorgeous

PeachNut · 10/04/2019 08:35

Not the right colour, but more like this?

TitusP · 10/04/2019 08:37

I had a huge window in my old bedroom, we bought two sets of curtains from IKEA and hung two curtains each side. I know it's not the proper way not do things, but when opened you couldn't tell and when closed the way the fabric hung disguised the join. The only annoying bit was pulling two sets of curtains every night, but the £60 it cost and having neutral curtains soon countered that.

Bouncebacker · 10/04/2019 08:38

I’m thinking white with a dark red throw and a couple of gold cushions might do it.

Ikea curtains are really long but just not wide enough.....

I’d have to pay someone to dye the curtains as they are so huge and I don’t think I’d like them even in a different colour - it’s the shiny ness that I don’t like...

If it were me, I'd get a base sheet that's similar to the burgundy flower, then cream everything else (maybe with a burgundy bed spread over the top)

Bouncebacker · 10/04/2019 08:40

Yes, that type of thing peach but, thanks!

This looks nice!

BiscuitDrama · 10/04/2019 08:45

What are the dimensions of the window? We had a similar issue I’m with a 3m window. We got plain grey on eBay for about £160 for two pairs. I just overlapped the curtain hooks at the top so they pull as one pair on each side.
It’s a shame to get nice bedding that isn’t quite right.

wonkylegs · 10/04/2019 08:47

Something in plain cream would work for me with those curtains or cream with a cream pattern like this www.dunelm.com/product/crochet-jacquard-cream-bed-linen-collection-b02703
You could add a ruby red cushion or throw if you wanted to pick out some colour

tocotoucan · 10/04/2019 09:02

I'd seriously make new curtains a priority. If you really dont like them spending money to buy bedding to match will make you hate them even more. I think you'd be surprised by how cheaply you can probably replace them. We have 2 sets of 7 metre tall curtains in our living room, and were originally quoted over £1000 to replace them, but since have managed to find much cheaper quotes online. Do you know anyone handy with a sewing machine? Buying fabric and a liner and getting someone to knock you up some basic tab tops shouldn't cost anywhere near as much either, fabric would just need cutting and hemming to the right sizes. x

Justkeeprollingalong · 10/04/2019 09:19

Curtains should be at least double the width of the window, so if the window is 2 metres wide, each curtain should be at least 2 metres wide. Don't skimp on them, you'll regret it.
If you really intend to change them (I actually like them!) I would go for cream bedding (which goes with anything) and get a throw and cushions in one of the flower colours.
They might grow on you!

Justkeeprollingalong · 10/04/2019 09:33

Loving in present 😂💕

mando12345 · 10/04/2019 09:44

I wouldn't buy bedding to match the horrible curtains.
I'd stick to plain white and not waste money on compromise bedding which could go on curtains.
Nice white bedlinen and your own tasteful furniture the curtains will not stand out.
