Door £8,000 quote?!?!?!

BookishKitten · 10/04/2019 08:06

Has anyone had a front door fitted recently?
May I ask how much it cost you and could you recommend a company?
We’ve been quoted £8,000 for a composite standard door with side panel, with frosted glass on the top half. I know composite doors are more expensive, but this seems excessive.
Could you share your experiences, even if it’s UPVC door?
Thank you!!

Our normal sized composite door in our old house was £800 fitted. We're looking at something similar to what you've described for our new house, the window guy said it would be around £1,700. So 8 grand is just crazy!

Swishswish26 · 10/04/2019 08:16

They are between £1000-£1500. Your quote is ludicrous, the firm/salesman is trying to rip you off spectacularly!

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 10/04/2019 08:16

Yet it should be under 2k.

Who is the quote by? If it is safestyle or someone of that ilk then their starting quotations are always ridiculous. I refuse to mess around with them and use local independent businesses that don't have the greasy salesmen.

Purpleknickers · 10/04/2019 08:17

wow! mine with side panel and fitted was £1300

MaisyMary77 · 10/04/2019 08:22

That’s crazy! Our composite door, two side windows and a pvc back door came to £2200. Have you tried a local company? When I was doing the windows on the back of my house (7 large windows) safe style quoted £17k, a local company did them for £3k. The difference in quotes was astounding. Although I did get lots of follow on calls from safestyle knocking more and more off the price.... In the end they offered the bargain price of £3.5k but I’d already signed up with the other company.

stucknoue · 10/04/2019 08:22

I paid £1500 including side panels and concreting

Wavingwhiledrowning · 10/04/2019 08:25

Our front door recently cost just over £2k. It's coloured composite with a fairly ornate glass insert, and it's a really big door. We also had a basic back door (top half glazed) and that was around £450. We use a local double glazing company. National firms tend to quote way more.

MummytoTw0 · 10/04/2019 08:30

Composite door with separate window at the top

£1300

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 10/04/2019 08:33

Composite door with all fittings but no side panel
£1300.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 10/04/2019 08:34

Is your quote for a door with solid gold hinges?

Yogagirl123 · 10/04/2019 08:35

May guess the quote was from Anglian? I had them quote on roofline items that needed replacing, quoted £18k, got a local recommended firm in £3200!

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 10/04/2019 08:36

If the OP is willing to reveal her vague location, maybe one of us could recommend a supplier for less than £1500

JuniorAsparagus · 10/04/2019 08:39

Was it a big national company? We were quoted £6,000 for a composite door with no side panel by Anglian Windows. Local firms are much cheaper.
We didn't get the door done and ended up moving anyway.

thecapitalsunited · 10/04/2019 08:39

I’m just about to have my front door done. Composite at the front, upvc at the back and a small window replaced for £2.5k. Your quote is insane. If it is with one of the big brands then I would look at a local independent. We found ours via the local fb group which has proved invaluable for finding trades.

Dvg · 10/04/2019 08:44

yeah door replacement should cost between 1200- 2.2k max

NicoAndTheNiners · 10/04/2019 08:47

I had a lovely composite door fitted a few months ago. £1400 with a frosted glass panel in the door and also a glass pane above the door. Would have been £1200 without that extra pane. It's a Solidor one.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 10/04/2019 08:48

I had quotes from big national companies for new windows years ago.
Once they started the "discounting" to reduce the price to still over the going rate, I refused to go any further. I don't want to deal with a company who freely admits that their opening price is blatantly ripping me off.

Pinotjo · 10/04/2019 08:52

I had new windows x 7 and patio doors for under £5k, local business, safestyle quoted £13k, shop around, or buy from b&q and get tradesman to fit

Hiddenaspie1973 · 10/04/2019 08:54

Should be 900 for door only
Side panels etc and door 1500 to 2000
I used to work in double glazing

Constantsarechanging · 10/04/2019 09:03

Had four quotes last year for a composite with side panel all ranging between £2200 -£4500 we went for a local firm and paid £2400, £8k seems crazy!

Cafeculture · 10/04/2019 09:09

I got the highest quality composite door fitted, larger than standard size with frosted glass on top half too and it was £2500. I thought that was a lot, though I must say it's been worth every penny.

HardAsSnails · 10/04/2019 09:09

Our RockDoor was under £2k.

cloudymelonade · 10/04/2019 09:10

That's ludicrous, just had ours done for £1800 and a composite stable door for £2300

KaterinaPetrova · 10/04/2019 09:10

Bloody hell. We had wood style UPVC half glass, arched framed set of double doors put in for £1700!

Try elsewhere.

TowandaForever · 10/04/2019 09:14

Why is a composite door better than upvc?
