What are these weird wall stains?

We've moved into a new house and can't afford to paint yet. We have these weird stains all up the wall in a bedroom. Don't shift easily with water and it's a painted wall. Any ideas? Honestly wondering if it's poo...

Need a bigger picture with some context for scale.

From those pics it could be a poor attempt at marbelling.

ComfortComes76 · 05/02/2019 15:29

Does this help?

It's definitely not marbelling.

It doesn't look good. It's brown. Have you tried bleach?

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 05/02/2019 15:46

Spirits if the Dead trying to communicate.

or damp.

ComfortComes76 · 05/02/2019 15:47

It's too...deliberate to be damp. I really think it might be poo Envy

Paddingtonthebear · 05/02/2019 15:48

I think it’s poo, sorry Sad

HowlsMovingBungalow · 05/02/2019 15:49

Doesn't look good - time to replaster that wall?

Summerdreamss · 05/02/2019 15:50

Looks like poo smearing...

LordPickle · 05/02/2019 15:51

Ok so when we moved into our house, we had a mattress propped up against a wall for about a month (spare room so not a priority) and when we got around to setting the room up and moved the mattress, we had similar stains on our wall. Confused The mattress was only about a year old so we're not sure why the stains happened but they definitely weren't there when we moved in so the mattress caused it.

LordPickle · 05/02/2019 15:52

Oh it definitely wasn't poo...our stains looked more like grease of some sort?

HowlsMovingBungalow · 05/02/2019 15:52

Just read you can afford to paint.

Try a kitchen cleaner with bleach in it.

MonoClue · 05/02/2019 15:55

OP, I had similar when I moved.
I bought one of those window mop things with an extendable handle (the marks went up to ceiling height Confused). A bucket of hot water with some bleach and a squirt of washing up liquid shifted the marks in no time.

Summerdreamss · 05/02/2019 15:55

Looks like finger trails which would explain the smearing.

Summerdreamss · 05/02/2019 15:58

Sugar soap might work. It's good for greasy build up

zebakrheum · 05/02/2019 16:13

They look like scuff marks to me, maybe from workmen squeezing past a large pile of building materials in the room.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 05/02/2019 16:22

Looks like something has been dragged along the wall. I bet it’s removal damage. Furniture moving leaves really funny marks.

TommyandGina · 05/02/2019 16:23

Dog paw marks?

birdladyfromhomealone · 05/02/2019 16:33

were they there when you viewed or show up on survey

picklemepopcorn · 05/02/2019 17:44

If a bed or cot was against the wall, a child could make those marks with the heels of their shoe, or even a toy repetitively rubbed against the walls. To me the marks are too consistent for smearing. No little skinny finger ones, or fat palm of the hand ones etc. No dense areas with streaks coming out from it.

youaremyrain · 05/02/2019 18:19

Bleach and repaint

allnewredfairy · 05/02/2019 18:23

sniff it!

CoperCabana · 05/02/2019 18:30

Can you remember what was in the room when you viewed it? I would agree with furniture scuffs. Maybe a very large mattress that they had to fight to get out of the room?

lightlypoached · 05/02/2019 18:33

Is it wallpaper or paint? A mate of mine recently had to take off her wallpaper as bugs from outside had burrowed through to 'eat' the wallpaper. It showed up as marks and scratches. Weirdest thing I've heard in ages.

Daisydoesnt · 05/02/2019 18:34

My stepson had a lovely habit at one point of lying on his bed with his feet propped up on the wall opposite. It left marks like that - think a heel mark in slightly grubby socks.
