.... and not some 45 old wally still living with mother and bitter because he spent all his money on model trains instead of a down-payment back in 1998?

Not a good cross section on there at all.

Is it going to crash do you think? Please give me your opinions. As far as I can see it's a 50/50 split on the nation's opinion but I would like to see how similar people to myself (parents with small children) think.

In the real world a mortgage debt bubble is going to be in trouble when interest rates start rising, it doesn`t matter what people say or have said on forums.

rahrahsa · 14/12/2022 20:04

It depends if you are overleveraged, how big your mortgage is in comparision to earnings. If you are lucky enough to have a comparatively small mortgage, it can still be cheaper than renting if interest rates rise. Ours is 30% of what we could borrow now. It was previously between 60-100% of what we could borrow. We have been cautious with borrowing, and with not trying to chase a bigger house. We have been fortunate enough to be able to overpay since day 1 due to low rates and lower prices in late 2000s. If you have a large mortgage with a higher LTV, it is probably cheaper to rent. You are still at the whims of the landlord and rent rises though, I'm very surprised by how high rents, and house prices have gone in the last decade.

I've checked on 5.5% interest rates. Rent would be nearly three times the mortgage, as it is small compared to cost of house due to overpaying when interest rates were low and due to mortgage not having that long left. With a 10% deposit, mortgage would be 50% higher than the rent and would go even higher with higher rates.

Yes, but a property bubble doesn`t get blown by prudent people like you! The absolute stupidity of the stamp duty holiday ( The save a few grand to massively over-pay for a house and be in debt for decades opportunity - still convinced a lot of the smart money got out at that point) and the mania over WFH, and needing to move miles away with a garden to do so LOL, just shows how dense a lot of the UK population are about property and judging reality/risk.

Have to agree with you there. A lot of the public are lemmings and very overleveraged on debt. How many people do see with two brand new cars on the drive and a shiny house? When you look at the UK average earnings it makes no sense. The next thing to burst will be PCP/lease car finance.

We have basic cars , savings and house is paid off. I'm not worried about COL crisis because we never let the lifestyle inflation kick in. I was wanting to move in 2020-21 but my gut was telling me it was a bad decision.

So there you are sat in your paid off house with your shit car. Why on earth would you be interested in discussing “public lemmings” and their demise?

Your full of it or very weird

EdgeOfACoin · 15/12/2022 08:36

Ah, lemmings.

Have we got to 'sheeple' yet? That's an HPC favourite.

Because it's interesting , public debt has soared because of cheap credit yet wages have not kept up. I may have a crap car but it works and I can afford to put the heating on. Also I want to upsize at some point so it's in my interest for the market to drop.

Mark19735 · 15/12/2022 10:24

It would also be in your interest to earn more, and save more. Don't you think that would be a better use of your time (and more realistic) than wanting every single other person who might be in competition with you to suffer job losses, divorces, disability or repossessions?
No matter how bad things get in the economy, there'll always be someone wanting the same house as you, and you will have to outbid them to secure the deal. Doesn't matter if prices are high, low, falling or rising.

Yes new job is coming up , well to spin it the last few years is pricing all the FTB out of the market which is very cruel. When I move in 18 months - 2 years my house would have also dropped it's perfect for a family so here I am sitting in my house which could be freed up. It's better to upsize in a falling market Some calm needed to return and no in my area you did not bid over asking for a house prior to the COVID madness. It just didn't happen so am I sad my house won't be gaining ridiculous amounts per year not really. I don't want huge huge drops and repossessions , a correction and stagnation yes. It needed to calm.

Blimey. I’ve never heard of HPC before. Popped on there today and, as it was easily spotted on the forum, had a nosey at their views re MN postings.

What a vile bunch of people. Only 5 pages, but they’ve covered all the basics without many words! Strong incel vibes, misogyny, ageism, disableism, the list goes on.

No way I’d read that site any further.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 16/12/2022 11:02

It's grim. But I like how they think they're 'studying' us. Like the gods up on Olympus or something, earnestly cautioning each other not to interfere in case it messes up their observations. Grin

You have absolutely hit the nail on the head. I’m not sure if it’s narcissism or Asperger’s, but one of the personality disorders. Main symptoms are believing that they are of superior intelligence. It seems to be an absolute smorgasbord of them.

Furries · 16/12/2022 16:58

Am loving their “MGTOW” posts. Thank fuck for that 😂

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 16/12/2022 19:40

Reminds me of when your DC is cross with you on a walk, so storms off ahead of you very pointedly (while taking care not to actually go out of view).

Mark19735 · 16/12/2022 20:21

The nefarious part of that site isn't those who display their misogyny, racism and classism in plain sight. It's the forum 'elders' who also moonlight as admins and use the power this gives them to silence any dissenters. I've had multiple posts deleted or languishing unapproved by the moderators - although it depends very much on the day of the week and time of day, which suggests there's some who are particularly fragile or have a personal beef with some participants, which isn't shared by the others who take a turn at moderation. CountofNowhere is definitely one of them - another is Si1.
They also use sock puppet accounts to steer threads towards an orchestrated conclusion, which always follows the same death spiral - the crash is imminent, anyone who disagrees is a troll, and everyone in the real world is stupid and deserves to suffer.

Tintime2022 · 16/12/2022 22:05

The crash has been imminent since 2002 from what I can remember 🙄

I only got a glimpse of their insight. But I liken it to a 95 year-old, on their deathbed, saying “see, I TOLD you I was going to die”.

Furries · 17/12/2022 01:35

And I thought MN/AIBU was bad for sniping - the guys on that thread take it to a whole new level amongst themselves. Whilst ensuring a few posts are thrown in to declare how stupid mums are. I just picture lots of huffy door slamming or, like @JesusInTheCabbageVan said, stomping off ahead in a huff. And then, 2 hours later, meekly asking “what’s for tea?”

Tintime2022 · 17/12/2022 07:33

Given often men are known to act on violence. That’s fucking scary that they even think that way. Perhaps it’s insightful as to what they really think about us, probably even the ones we are married to.

Furries · 17/12/2022 01:30

I actually think it was interesting had little read through it. I have often said the majority of men do not want to be husbands, and frankly do not want to be fathers. You see them in family situations and they aren’t happy and then they create misery all around them for the families.
If those men remove themselves from the gene pool, I don’t actually think that’s a bad thing at all. Let them go to their own way.
