Paint inspiration to brighten a south facing room !!!

Apparently, my bedroom is south facing. Now the difficulty part is choosing a paint as there are so many types of finishes, brand and shade. Words like pure, brilliant, off-white, trade contract, soft sheen, matt confuse the hell out of my brain.

My idea is to use a turquoise pleated blind for the window, dulux luscious lime for 1 wall and the rest of the wall bright or warm white. According to pinterest, turquoise, and lime go well with bright or warm white. My issue now is choosing a bright or warm white. This is where I hope you guys can help with.

I thought about pure brilliant or just brilliant white but I read some where that suggested that paint a room in pure brilliant or just brilliant white is not a good idea (something about it will make the room look cold, clinical etc) and that instead soft white like sail or jasmine white will be better.

Any idea on which bright or warm white to choose for a south facing room.

Brilliant white looks awful, indeed. We've found Antique white from B&Q colours great. It looks warm and great with turquoise in our bedroom.

Any other suggestions for white that is not pure brilliant white.

Valspar have some really good colour options (B&Q) in loads of different shades, including a whole palette of white tones.
Agree that pure brilliant white looks clinical, have been re-painting my kitchen (after 8 months in the house) tonight as the walls were pure brilliant white and the cupboards were white high gloss. It looked like an operating theatre!

I love brilliant white. With the right flooring and furniture it looks great.

You don't sound convinced that it is south facing?

If you're going to go for luscious lime on one wall (bold choice!) then you need a white with some green or (perhaps better) a grey in it to complement that.

You need a few of bits of ply or card or something that you can paint, one with the lime colour, and others with the complementary colours, until you figure out what works best.

Because the room is south facing, you can't really do much to change how warm or cool the light is. It's a warm light so a bright white will not feel clinical - it's the external sunlight which makes it feel warm.

So I would go for a matt white then if you don't like it, it's easy to add colour.

Believeitornot. Nice to know that a bright white will not feel clinical since its a south facing room with already warm light. Which bright matt which would you recommend and from which brand.

What about dulux pure brilliant white.?

I wouldn't use any of those loud colours in a bedroom. you could use calmer colours on the walls and then have colourful art and cushions etc. Im only saying this because I have gone with loud colours and gotten sick of them very quickly and especially in a bedroom, it might be too much when you are trying to calm down to sleep.

I'm not a colour expert so others here will advise you better, but are you leaning towards bluey watery colours or yellowy warm colours?

Any trade matt white will work - they come in big tubs. dulux is what we've used. I'd then add some nice art work and bright coloured bed linen to liven things up a bit.

White is normally very stark/ harsh and very difficult to soften. You’ve also got some bright colours with the teal and green, which will break it up somewhat and stop it looking like a hospital room, but I’d look for a softer colour for your walls.a very soft green or blue to blend in.

See I think soft greens or blues are more hospital than white! I guess it's all really just personal taste!

We have matt white in our dd's south facing bedroom. It has a lot of colour on the walls from pictures plus she has a bright pink and bright orange rug and brightly coloured bedding. It doesn't feel clinical at all!

Jasmine white is v similar to brilliant white.

Apricot or blossom White are warmer colours but still on an actual colour. Shades of white.

We have Jasmine white in our living room and love it. It can look green, blue, turquoise, depending on the light.

Thanks to all that have contributed so far. With turquoise been given mentioned, my plan is to get a curtain or blind in the colour of turquoise for the window. Question is as the idea is to go white and have 1 wall in lime green, would it be better to also have the blind /curtain white or lime green to blind in with the white and lime wall or would a blind or curtain in turquoise also blind in with the white and lime wall.

I've got brilliant white in my south facing kitchen (blue cupboards) and I love it! Not clinical at all, just clan and fresh. I think with lime and turquoise it would be great and keep the lime zingy!

Lime wall, white wall with turquoise blind would work. You might want to pick up the turquoise on the bed linen a bit? Have a piece of art on a white wall that has a bit of lime in too 😀

Now that the plan is to go white with lime on one wall, choosing which white finish is now on the agenda. As I understand it matt is none wipeable and can make a wall dull, silk make wall shining and is wipeable, soft sheen is the gap between matt and silk. Given its a bedroom I .decorating, which finish is best?

what is the difference between pure brilliant / just brilliant white.

Are trade paint better than standard paint?

I knkw same pain finishes can be painted over the same paint finish but Can silk be paint over matt or does it have to be matt over silk? I got the impression that because silk is shinning in nature, matt will not paint well over silk.

I don't think it matters just paint it. You are not really going to be needing to scrub the walls in a bedroom anyway. Just do it, the white will be lovely.

I want to give my bed frame an up lift as well and turn the frame into upholstery frame. Now, given that the wall will be white, another wall in lime and turquoise blind. What colour would you recommend for the fabric of the upholstery?

I was thinking a fabic in lime or turquoise or white but i sort of rule out white as that may get dirty too quick.

Used loads of dulux brilliant white in my first house as it's the cheapest and could accessorise with bright colours. After six months it looks like all the more expensive off-white colours anyway. Green is a good choice for a bedroom though, hope you are delighted with the end result

What colour fabric should I use to make my
upholstery bed. Should I be looking at getting a colour that go with my white / lime wall and turquoise blind or any fabric colour will do.
