Room about 4.5 *5. Large bay window so very light. Oak floor. Has picture rail and coving. We want to do something other than light grey, white or a shade of magnolia. DH is very keen that it looks traditional. We have no furniture or curtains to match. Any suggestions? Decorator wants to know tomorrow, so mumsnet please help!

Do you have a picture? And any particular tastes you like?

GinGeum · 06/07/2017 18:40

(Tastes as in colour wise I mean, I know you've said traditional!)

SerfTerf · 06/07/2017 18:42

Sage green? Dusty blue?

elephantpig · 06/07/2017 18:46

We've just painted our chimney breast and alcoves hague blue (farrow and ball). Edwardian house, bay window etc, looks amazing.

elephantpig · 06/07/2017 18:46

(and other walls are white)

A deep dusty red? I've seen one in a Victorian house and it looked gorgeous. It was only up to the picture rail.

Elephantpig and Serfterf, what type of white would you use with a dark blue? Am interested in Hague Blue or one of the other F&B dark blues. I read that you shouldn't put stark white next to them.

F&B's Pointing? Or something one shade whiter than that? Pointing is a sort-of "nearly white". I use it a lot.

Our front room sounds very similar and is deep red up to the dado. I want to redo it in forest green though, or perhaps a bold period-inspired foliage wallpaper between the dado and picture rails. I think richer colours are more Victorian than pastels in a living room myself, but I don't know how authentic that is!

Wrong finish, and I'd get it colour matched to Johnsons or Dulux anyway, but that's the colour.

Pale gold.

GinGeum · 06/07/2017 18:58

We have Hardwicke White which is greenish grey. Looks good. Victorian with bay.

needtoloseastone · 06/07/2017 20:05

Navy. Google some images. Looks amazing but I don't have the high ceilings for it!

sorenipples · 06/07/2017 21:26

Thanks. I am liking the blues. We were thinking dark red or maybe a brownish green but I am not convinced it will go with the floor. I like the idea of a dark colour but am worried it is a bit "brave".

Just realised they have started doing the coving with stark white so that will limit our options.

I've got other rooms to paint (eventually ) and I am thinking something like the powder blue, or maybe hardwick white for the master bedroom. (Also large bay).

I also need to paint a large kitchen dinner..... too much choice!

Oh, I've just been looking at reds and love this Little Greene one Bronze Red

I also love Obsidian Green but I've nowhere to use it. It'd look great with dark wood and white woodwork and lots of plants.

Justgivemeamo · 06/07/2017 22:41

i love it when coving is done in same color not made to stand out

RedastheRose · 07/07/2017 00:39

Actual Victorian colours are very dark, quite somber really. Dark red was a favourite also dark forest green those sort of colours. Perhaps the sage green or blue PP suggest would be better

EpoxyResin · 07/07/2017 20:38

What colour did you go for OP?
