Are painted/stained fences anything other than brown a bit naff?

We're having a new fence put up at the bottom of the garden. I'm thinking of painting it green so it kind of blends in with the foliage down there. I have this nagging doubt that painted fences are a bit naff though 😬

It can look lovely. My neighbour painted hers a light muted green and it looks great!

I think green stain (not paint) can look really nice. I'm also coming round to black after having seen it on several make-over programmes recently - but I think that has to be the 'right' sort of garden to work.

AlternativeTentacle · 19/06/2017 12:30

Black. Everything in gardens should be black apart from sheds which should be bluey green or black. Fact. :)

Anything but shit brown. I've been trying to crack this particular nut for years.

Dark brown front and Brown or dark green back.

My fences are white. Reflects loads of light into my dark house.

Hate fence panels, so bloody ugly. sorry not helping

SleepFreeZone · 19/06/2017 12:54

I can see that black panels are amazing if you have a slick garden that's been landscaped. I think in my situation though I probably want something a bit more subtle.

Just painted my shed ' country cream' Wink

Whoops, posted too soon.
I think it would look good on my fence too ~ quite light!

smitti · 19/06/2017 13:13

My neighbours sprayed their fences cream when I was on holiday, apparently they were very careful. Not careful enough though, my garden furniture, paving, flower tubs and some bits of fence are a lovely splattered cream too. It's a mess.

SleepFreeZone · 19/06/2017 13:30

No spray painting here. It will be old fashioned stain I think applied with a brush.

LoveB · 19/06/2017 13:36

No not naff in the slightest! I think brown is a bit naff if anything

LoveB · 19/06/2017 13:38

p.s. I was shocked and appalled at the idea of a black fence just then alternative, but looking at pics - love it!

hollyisalovelyname · 19/06/2017 13:40

Dark green is lively OP

hollyisalovelyname · 19/06/2017 13:40

Oops lovely not lively Blush

If you do go brown avoid the stuff that goes red after it dries / fades - I dislike the red colour. I like a nice dark brown (russet) as it looks like tree bark in my head! With green over the top of the fence and the green grass I like the contrast.

I used a nearly black shade by accident and that gives a contrast to the green too. Was too dark for my taste though.

I have a green shed which wouldn't be great with plants as they would be lost against the green (no contrast). But good if you want to pretend there is no shed!

A friend painted their fence white to lighten up a north facing garden. Great in winter - but blinding in summer.

mummabubs · 19/06/2017 14:04

@chanel19 I painted our fence panels Country Cream! 😂 I love it OP, we have a small garden which had poo brown fence and was completely slate when we moved in- cream fencing and grass have made such a difference to how light our garden and downstairs are.

chanel19 · 19/06/2017 14:07

mummabubs thanks for that. I'll paint the fence next ( l think) Grin

Oldgranny · 19/06/2017 14:09

Mines muted green and is lovely x

Spaghettio · 19/06/2017 14:15

We've painted our front fence grey - with the lavender in front of it, it looks lovely. (And we can give directions to people - "we're the house with the grey fence and lavender". Just hoping the neighbours don't paint their fence the same colour.....!)

BBQsAreSooooOverrated · 19/06/2017 14:17

Ours is a sage green, I really prefer it to the reddy brown it was previously.

KingJoffreysRestingCuntface · 19/06/2017 14:18

Mine are a light sagey green.

It's a small garden and three sides out if four having a dark brown fence made it seem a bit gloomy and coffin-like.

Lilac was also an option. Cream would be nice.

I used regular emulsion. Was a bit bright at first but they've kind of weathered and it's toned it down.
