Are painted/stained fences anything other than brown a bit naff?

We're having a new fence put up at the bottom of the garden. I'm thinking of painting it green so it kind of blends in with the foliage down there. I have this nagging doubt that painted fences are a bit naff though 😬

Black?! In a garden? Are you all mad?

Do whatever you like the look of. Personally I think weathered, mid-brown fence panels look fine and inoffensive, but hate anything tending towards orange. I love the way greens blend in with the garden, and intend to paint mine next spring before everything starts growing again.

p.s. I was shocked and appalled at the idea of a black fence just then alternative, but looking at pics - love it!

That is because it shows off the garden to it's best.

I hope not!
I've just spent today painting my new fence Forest Green. It's rather nice Grin

Decorhate · 19/06/2017 18:06

Mine are dark grey & that's also a great colour to put greenery against

SerfTerf · 19/06/2017 18:16

No, green is a perfectly permissible colour for fence stain unlike blue

MyCalmX · 19/06/2017 18:32

Our front picket is dark grey and it looks really good. Dh had been nagging for ages and I finally said OK last year. Wished I said yes earlier!

FrownsAndDimples · 19/06/2017 18:42

I was appalled at the suggestion of black for a garden and then saw the pics. Omg, amazing!

imip · 19/06/2017 18:46

Ours are black, we spent last summer painting and building raised beds. We need to plant plants - may be too late for that this year.

I'll add a pic. Only problem is it shows up the spiders webs.

Not the greatest pic but my washing is out!

blueskyinmarch · 19/06/2017 18:49

Ours is a dark grey. It shows up the plants really nicely.

puffylovett · 21/06/2017 20:31

Mine are going to be black or charcoal when I get around to replacing them. So is dhs workshop when we get around to putting it up (only been planning it for 7 years Hmm)

Dark colours make the plants sing :)

Please op brown is naff not other coolurs, they are only brown because thats the only colour there used to be!

Soooo many colours , buy some and mix your own! I think brown is so old fashioned and dark and nothing looks particularly nice agaisnt it as a back drop.

I am quite like a dark green when the fence is obstructed by bushes and trees. It might blend in unobtrusively.

in most cases I like a dark brown. Any concrete fenceposts or gravel boards can be treated with masonry paint to match.
