If you can, where do you live? I want my mum to move to your neck of the woods Grin

Mum is divorcing and struggling to buy where she is (SW England) or where me and my DSis live (NW and East Mids) for £115 - 117k, which is her share of the house proceeds minus a few grand to cover moving / storage / legal costs. She can't have a flat as she has a small dog, and wants to park her car / be near shops for when she's older and no longer driving. Not much then Sad .

She wants a freehold, as she won't have the income for a leasehold service charge, and isn't eligible for deals with new builds as she's not a first time buyer, just low income as she's retired and got a crap level of pension from PT working.

I think I'm looking for the impossible, but I'm just hoping for some possible ideas of areas I can look at for her.

You could get a 2 bedroom house for that here in the north west, Lancashire, probably a 3 bedroom.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 11/06/2017 13:48

Every time one of these threads comes up I get inspired to move.

I live in the SE. There is nothing under £120,000 within 50 miles of my house. Nothing. Not even a studio flat.

MikeUniformMike · 11/06/2017 13:53

Not where I live. You can get a 2 or 3 bed house in many parts of the country for your mother's budget. How about somewhere like Stoke-on-Trent as affordable and fairly near NW and E. Mids.

BlahBlahBlahEtc · 11/06/2017 14:08

There's a 4 bed semi down the road for £115 000.
Tons of 3 beds for £100 000 - £120 000

flumpybear · 11/06/2017 14:29

Where are you in East Midlands? I'm in west bridgford which is crazy expensive, but if you go out towards Bingham, Newark, Grantham, north towards Mansfield there are a
few houses there in that range ... may take a
While to find the right Thing in a nice area but perhaps she can live with you briefly to be more like a
First time buyer if she's
Got nothing to sell ?

HoobleDooble · 11/06/2017 14:47

Oh yes easily (Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire border) www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-47175354.html

maybefallingapart · 11/06/2017 15:01

Yes with about £20k change left over. In the city just up the road

Theresnonamesleft · 11/06/2017 15:05

What about a boat? 2 bed boat in Chelsea for 65k

ASauvingnonADay · 11/06/2017 15:12

Not where I am (SW). You couldn't get a 2 bed for less than 200/250k, and that wouldn't be a particularly roomy one!

hellokittymania · 11/06/2017 15:18

You can't even buy a studio for that in my area. I have been looking around at lots of places, but I don't think a lot of them were in the area you need. I was looking at places that have good transportation, so Nottingham, etc.

SteppingOnToes · 11/06/2017 15:27

Can buy a 3 bed here for that - Lancashire

littlebunnyhophophop · 11/06/2017 16:45

Were just outside Glasgow and you could probably buy a 3 bed house and still have change here !

specialsubject · 12/06/2017 10:04

Hopefully this thread proves that it is not necessary to move to mars to be able to buy a house. Lots of cities which means good transport , work, schools, hospitals etc, as well as many other choices.

Iamastonished · 12/06/2017 10:11

Waves to Frouby. I' m near Barnsley and you can easily buy a 2 bed house for that.

alltouchedout · 12/06/2017 10:28

There are 8 2 bed houses and 1 3 bed house on for £115k or less in my immediate neighbourhood. A few on for £120k which it would probably be worth making an offer on. 2 bed flats start from £80k.

I've just had a look at actual sold prices and there is such variation, 2 bed terraces seem to go for anything between £80k and £160k. But there are 4 beds selling for less than £160k in some streets. It's all very odd.

ProseccoandPizza · 12/06/2017 10:30

Blaenau Gwent in South Wales. You can get a large 3 bedroom for that plus change.
Or a 8 bedroom ex public house.

GrubbyWindows · 12/06/2017 21:07

I think paying a sensible service charge in a well managed block is prob more affordable than having to pay alone for major repairs as they crop up, no? (Eg- roof) Obvs makes more sense in a larger block than in two flats in a converted house...

phoenix1973 · 12/06/2017 21:15

No.

BikeRunSki · 12/06/2017 21:16

You'd get 2 beds in a nice area, or 3 beds in a less nice (but still OK) area here. W/S Yorks boundary.

StressedMover · 12/06/2017 21:17

Couldn't buy anything for that! Home Counties

MissCherryCakeyBun · 12/06/2017 21:19

I'm in Harpenden Hertfordshire, nothing within that price range within 40 miles that's not a boat or shared ownership

This is the cheapest 2 bed and it's over 20 miles away

Prices round here are obscene 😞

Could you buy a 2-bed where you live for £115K - £117k?
MissCherryCakeyBun · 12/06/2017 21:20

Miss typed 10 miles away by road

Radishal · 12/06/2017 21:24

East Manchester/ TAMESIDE

thelikelylass · 12/06/2017 21:44

If the north west how about Southport way? Great walks for the dog and your mum.
