If you can, where do you live? I want my mum to move to your neck of the woods Grin

Mum is divorcing and struggling to buy where she is (SW England) or where me and my DSis live (NW and East Mids) for £115 - 117k, which is her share of the house proceeds minus a few grand to cover moving / storage / legal costs. She can't have a flat as she has a small dog, and wants to park her car / be near shops for when she's older and no longer driving. Not much then Sad .

She wants a freehold, as she won't have the income for a leasehold service charge, and isn't eligible for deals with new builds as she's not a first time buyer, just low income as she's retired and got a crap level of pension from PT working.

I think I'm looking for the impossible, but I'm just hoping for some possible ideas of areas I can look at for her.

Southport and surrounding areas, plus advantage of flat, Chorley and Leyland. Areas may not be the best areas in the town but its all relative, the less desirable areas of Chorley are nothing like the bad areas in London for example

I know people who live in flats and have a share of the freehold. It's not that unusual if the flats are converted rather than purpose-built.

specialsubject · 10/06/2017 20:16

just possible in Shrewsbury, certainly possible in other Shropshire towns.

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 10/06/2017 20:19

There's a 4-bed house for sale in my town for £115k.

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 10/06/2017 20:19

(SW Wales)

scissormister · 10/06/2017 20:21

In some parts of Birmingham you probably could, but i don't know about the area or condition of the property...

SingaporeSlander · 10/06/2017 20:31

North Lincolnshire / bits of Nottinghamshire? Close to / is East Mids?

Grantham?

sakura06 · 10/06/2017 20:32

In North Wales, yes.

NotMeNoNo · 10/06/2017 20:33

Swadlincote/Coalville/Markfield area there are plenty - NW Leics/south Derbyshire, not a bad area albeit not posh, and very well connected in all directions. Same goes for Hinckley/ Nuneaton. Is she looking for town or village. Would ex-council be OK in an established area?

Lots going on in Leicestershire including hundreds of WI groups if she wants to meet some people.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 10/06/2017 20:36

If you're East Mids have you looked at the Burton/Derby area? Not too far away & should be OK on that budget.

I'm nearer Lichfield & a 2 bed house here is nearer £140k.

umberellaonesie · 10/06/2017 20:37

Could get a three bedroom with big garden round the corner from me. 😁

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 10/06/2017 20:38

My 3 bed house is worth £100k.

monsieurpoirot · 10/06/2017 21:01

I live in Northamptonshire. Just checked RM there are 90 2/3 bed houses in the county (having excluded flats and new builds)...

Ecureuil · 10/06/2017 22:22

NW Leics/south Derbyshire, not a bad area albeit not posh

Err excuse me... I live in a 'posh' bit of NWL Wink

Herschellmum · 10/06/2017 22:25

South Wales, get a lot for your money here.

userofthiswebsite · 10/06/2017 22:28

No, but this is London.

JustCallMeKate · 10/06/2017 22:32

Easily in some parts of Scotland. We've just bought a 3 bed semi rental property for £128,000 in a nice area of Central Scotland.

TalkinPeece · 10/06/2017 22:39

if she is over 60 then yes

Bought my 2 bed 2 years ago for £93k. Big kitchen, decent living room, extra reception room in the form of a cellar the size of the whole ground floor (super useful!) a bathroom downstairs and one upstairs and 2 double bedrooms :)

It's also on the outskirts of a small rural town and we have the attached view from the back of the house :)

We're in the midlands, in a small town about 6 miles from stoke on Trent :)

Could you buy a 2-bed where you live for £115K - £117k?

  • a lovely area, and with some cash over to redecorate :-)
gillybeanz · 10/06/2017 22:52

I'm in East Lancs and you could get the best areas for that type of money.
The less appealing areas you could get a 3 bed semi with bmed size garden for that.

Kursk · 10/06/2017 22:54

There were some properties in the Briton and Frome area in that price range.

user1473539918 · 10/06/2017 23:07

Yep....brought my house (first home) 80K 2 bed, mid terrace. Chesterfield, Derbyshire.

Kateallison16 · 10/06/2017 23:34

You would struggle getting a one bed flat for that here. In a rougher area they are like 90-110 in this neck the woods (SE)

CryingShame · 11/06/2017 08:54

Thank you for all these suggestions; they moved to the SW because they liked the area, and knew no-one, so I suspect she'd rather live somewhere that appeals to her than down the road from her DCs. She would need that 2nd bedroom for us to stay though.

Lots of food for thought here, I'll copy the suggestions across to her. Ecureuil where did your mum buy her new build? She'd love one but it seemed to be out of her budget.
