If you can, where do you live? I want my mum to move to your neck of the woods Grin

Mum is divorcing and struggling to buy where she is (SW England) or where me and my DSis live (NW and East Mids) for £115 - 117k, which is her share of the house proceeds minus a few grand to cover moving / storage / legal costs. She can't have a flat as she has a small dog, and wants to park her car / be near shops for when she's older and no longer driving. Not much then Sad .

She wants a freehold, as she won't have the income for a leasehold service charge, and isn't eligible for deals with new builds as she's not a first time buyer, just low income as she's retired and got a crap level of pension from PT working.

I think I'm looking for the impossible, but I'm just hoping for some possible ideas of areas I can look at for her.

Could most definitely get a 2 bed house with a yard with change left over!

In Preston and the surrounding areas. Same goes for Bolton, Accrington and the like.

Where are you OP?

ThomasHardyPerennial · 10/06/2017 19:42

Lots of 3, or even a few 4 beds, in my area of West Yorkshire for that price.

Ollivander84 · 10/06/2017 19:43

Easily. 635 results in Preston when I searched under £110k

I don't think she should underestimate all the problems she will face moving away from her family and friends and should compromise to stay in the area where she has a support network.

Or perhaps she should just rent? How much are 2 bed rentals where she is?

Otherwise retirement schemes tend to be cheaper. Service charges aren't always very expensive and will include some expenses like home insurance.

I live in the Black Country and you could but a 3 bed here for that and it's an awesome place to live.

megletthesecond · 10/06/2017 19:44

Not in hampshire.

NameChanger22 · 10/06/2017 19:45

In most of the Midlands and the north you can buy a 2 bed for that.

Ecureuil · 10/06/2017 19:45

I'm in the east mids and my mum has just bought a 2 bed new build for £110k!

reetgood · 10/06/2017 19:46

@jellybean85 that's west leeds, up my way. Great value I agree!

SimplyNigella · 10/06/2017 19:46

Coventry/Hinckley/Nuneaton all have houses in that price bracket and aren't a million miles from you.

RyanStartedTheFire · 10/06/2017 19:48

Yes, in the less affluent side of the small city. I am midlands but rural.

clary · 10/06/2017 19:49

Ey up Polarbear me duck!

I agree OP, somewhere near you or your sister would surely be best.

There is loads of property in Derby and lots of other areas near here for that price. Where are you in the East Mids, if you don't mind saying?

Gwenhwyfar · 10/06/2017 19:53

Why does she need two bedrooms?
You could get that in parts of Cardiff and houses are much cheaper in other parts of Wales.

Redglitter · 10/06/2017 19:54

Absolutely - West of Scotland

user1473494811 · 10/06/2017 19:54

Xenophile · 10/06/2017 19:54

Loads when I just searched my city and environs in N Lancs, and it's a great place to live.

FreeNiki · 10/06/2017 19:55

Hell no.

Nothing for less than around £450k.

Lynnm63 · 10/06/2017 19:55

Most of Lincolnshire you can get decent 2/3 bed terrace or end of terrace properties for that price. Might even find a 2 bed detached bungalow for £125k if you can stretch that high.

GU24Mum · 10/06/2017 19:55

Yeovil, Hastings, NE.

PS To the PP who said that not all flats are leasehold - they are unless something very odd is going on!

DanceTheBlues · 10/06/2017 19:55

Loads of places round Greater Manchester!

You can buy a 3-bed semi in a suburb of Manchester for around £110k (we bought two years ago for sub-£100k).
