If you can, where do you live? I want my mum to move to your neck of the woods Grin

Mum is divorcing and struggling to buy where she is (SW England) or where me and my DSis live (NW and East Mids) for £115 - 117k, which is her share of the house proceeds minus a few grand to cover moving / storage / legal costs. She can't have a flat as she has a small dog, and wants to park her car / be near shops for when she's older and no longer driving. Not much then Sad .

She wants a freehold, as she won't have the income for a leasehold service charge, and isn't eligible for deals with new builds as she's not a first time buyer, just low income as she's retired and got a crap level of pension from PT working.

I think I'm looking for the impossible, but I'm just hoping for some possible ideas of areas I can look at for her.

You can where I live in north east wales. Plenty of them and in a decent area. Lots of public transport and about a 20min drive or bus into Chester. They're cheap as it's seen as 'wales' well it is wales but somehow that really affects house prices. We live in a beautiful 4 bed, 3 bath detached house with a double detached garage and it cost £225k. Head over the border into Chester and you're looking at £400k plus for same. Madness!!

I live in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire and I was having a casual look at the houses in our area and I even spotted a 5 bed for £84,000!

LIZS · 11/06/2017 09:29

No chance. Even in the wider area you would be hard pushed to find anything below 200k.

KeiraKnightleyActsWithHerTeeth · 11/06/2017 09:31

Not where I live now but you certainly could in the North West. My friend just bought a very nice 2 up 2 down with cellars and a lovely garden, a 10 min train ride from Manchester for £105k

LIZS · 11/06/2017 09:32

We're in SE but dm struggled to find anything other than a retirement one bed flat in East Midlands for 120k. 2 beds in that area were 150k minimum.

heavenlypink · 11/06/2017 09:34

As others have said in the North East yes

There's a two bed semi detached with driveway parking and (albeit small) garden for £117K not that far from me!

SellFridges · 11/06/2017 09:34

My family are in NE Derbyshire and you could definitely get something for that in one of a the villages. They're generally pretty well connected and have services in the village (shops Dr etc). I wouldn't choose to live there but that's personal taste!

NennyNooNoo · 11/06/2017 09:37

Yes in west Norfolk. Anywhere around Kings Lynn or Downham Market, which probably wouldn't be too far away from you if you're East Midlands.

Beebeeeight · 11/06/2017 09:40

Why does she need a 2 bed?

For future care it's better for her to be close to family.

Badgertastic · 11/06/2017 09:41

I did a rightmove search on a Leicestershire postcode with a radius of 15 miles just looking for 2 bed houses and max budget of £120k and 420 houses came up in the search.

londonfeather · 11/06/2017 09:45

Take a look at Doncaster. There are some nice bits and there will be decent properties for that money. Good train & transport links to York, Leeds and London too.

HamletsSister · 11/06/2017 09:48

Yes. And a sea view (Scotland) and a garden. Possibly even a 3rd bedroom.

Anasnake · 11/06/2017 09:52

You get a 2 bed semi with a garden or a 3 bed terrace for that where I live - North West

kel1234 · 11/06/2017 09:58

Easily where I am in the north west.

Whileweareonthesubject · 11/06/2017 10:00

I'm in an easy London borough. Nothing in this borough at all for less than £150k and those are 1bed flats. I've looked at barking and dagenham. Nothing there either. The closest to me with anything near that price, though still more, is Gravesend in Kent.

TheABC · 11/06/2017 10:07

Coventry & warwickshire: yes, if you are not too picky about the area (e.g. in the city rather than a picturesque village). I would seriously consider a retirement apartment - then are often well located, will allow pets and have allocated car parking spaces. It would allow her to easily make new friends and prevent the hassle of another move, further down the line.

IrritatedUser1960 · 11/06/2017 10:11

She could buy a beach hut for that here.

ThouShallNotPass · 11/06/2017 10:32

SW Scotland village. Semi detached 3 beds go for about £70K. Some as cheap as £42K just 6 years ago.

iamdazedandconfused · 11/06/2017 10:53

You can easily buy a 3 bed semi for that in Cumbria Grin

NotMeNoNo · 11/06/2017 12:02

Ecureuil yes of course Smile but there are not houses in the OP's budget in the naice bits (I checked ADLZ). I just put that because people are talking about "choosing areas carefully" and you never know where they set the bar. I have no problem personally I love it round here and that it's a Waitrose free zone.

I'm baffled by the person who couldn't find anything in that budget in the whole of the East Midlands??

user98765432101 · 11/06/2017 12:05

The cheapest 2 bed flat within 3 miles is £120000. The cheapest 2 bed house is £150000. A new build 2 bed flat is £165000 and house is £277000. So no op, you can't (SE England)

LilaBard · 11/06/2017 12:12

My parents live in a 3 bed detached bungalow in rural NI with an acre of land, and it's valued at less than 115k

mum22boys83 · 11/06/2017 13:33

I'm Derbyshire Sheffield Rotherham border and get a lovely little 3 bed terrace for that if willing to decorate and spend money at a later date if she could do that and a 2 bed terrace nearly done for budget. Victorian type so actually quite big. New development going up in the next village so actually tons of 2 beds going up it's really a buyers market at the minute as family's going to the new estate for 3 bed new builds/more space ( semi or detached ) . My friends selling her 3 bed terrace for 130. Like a show home !
